hey Nikhil,Thanks for your video.Can you build for visionOS Without the headset?from India.Learning UE5 AND UNITY for quest development.?have you tried to build for quest and how its good for Mac?
@NikhilJacobАй бұрын
Hey, so there is a visionOS simulator that comes with Xcode (the IDE). So, if you have a Mac with apple silicon, you can build visionOS apps, with just the simulator. However, if its a 3D centric app, then even though you can test on a simulator, you would ultimately need a headset, to capture all the nuances

@NikhilJacob3 ай бұрын
Hi so yess if you got a Vision Pro and an Apple silicon Mac , you can build your own apps. You need both. Or else, you can also build apps on the simulator with Mac only (simulator provided with latest Xcode/visionOS SDK. But only building on simulator is not enough and limited, especially for 3D centric apps. So, ideally you would have both Vision Pro device and Apple silicon mac

Thanks for the video! I really needed this motivation. How far into iOS development would you recommend I go, if I eventually want to be a Vision Pro developer? Should I go as far as learning enough to get a junior iOS dev role, or is that too off track? For background, I'm currently a FAANG software engineer with 2YOE in frontend web development. My company unfortunately has no plans in the foreseeable future to create a visionOS app (or any XR app for that matter). I've been thinking of studying iOS and trying to switch to our iOS team instead to get experience, but am unsure if that makes sense since I really want to do Vision pro development.

Hi Nikhil, your video is suuuuuper helpful for us to learn developing for vision os. I wonder how do you enable user to "walk around" inside of a skybox? Or how to you change the user's eye position inside of a skybox? Could you please make a video on that if possible?
@NikhilJacob4 ай бұрын
Hi Lucy 👋 glad you are finding it helpful, and those are great ideas, will keep note. Regarding walking around, unfortunately Vision Pro does not let you, it is restricted to stationary experiences unlike the Quest series, one of the drawbacks of the platform. Not designed for VR but AR

The immersion breaks after the user is a few metres away
@zeroh_chill29663 ай бұрын
For a skybox this is true, you can’t walk around but maybe a few meters. In full immersion though you absolutely can walk around for as big as the world is that you’re in. So just to say “you can’t do it unlike quest” is absolutely false if you mean the avp isn’t capable of it at all. The skybox simply is something different than what full immersion is.
@zeroh_chill29663 ай бұрын
Lucy, to answer your question correctly, yes you can “walk around” inside an AVP fully immersive scene. But that’s not what a skybox is. This video is a skybox which creates an environment. It’s not the same thing and the AVP is capable of both. In fact, when creating a brand new Vision Pro app, Xcode offers you an immersive scene right from the beginning without even doing anything. You just drop in your own 3D world and can go right in it and walk around. It takes basically zero work. Less steps in fact than the skybox
@NikhilJacob3 ай бұрын
@@zeroh_chill2966 That is not correct for AVP - there is a 1.5m boundary from origin, after which immersion breaks and passthrough is forced by the system. Check their documentation: "the system defines a boundary that extends about 1.5 meters from the initial position of the wearer’s head. As a person’s head gets close to this boundary, the experience begins to fade and passthrough increases. The experience stops if a person’s head moves beyond the boundary, and restarts when they return to their original location or recenter their view." developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/immersive-experiences Yes, the SDK gives you an immersive scene, but point is the immersive scene is intended for stationary experiences with 1.5m limit.

Hi Nikhil, Thank you for the video, it was immensely informative. However, I have to point out a few things. Vision Pro is just Apple's way of creating, or rather forcing, a product hype into the mainstream narrative while doubling down on the narrative that "it's transformative and super rad to have." But in reality it's not. Humans still yearn for physical presence and connection with one another. And I think you recall there were (and still are) numerous technologies that boast "AR/VR/Metaverse" experiences. While their use cases may be niche, I doubt generation 2 or 3 will change the trajectory for us to start using it, unless of course mobiles become obsolete or redundant (which I doubt will happen even in the next 10 years). Plus, Apple in the last few years has been stale in terms of development, and their marketing scheme is nothing but a ruse to lure people into buying their stuff which has lost its innovative "edge." iPhone's functionality and UI, as seamless and nice as it is, has been the same since the iPhone 4 and we're at iPhone 15 now.
@NikhilJacob4 ай бұрын
Hi 👋 Glad you found it insightful. I hear you but fundamentally disagree, my friend - here’s why 1) Apple has been working on and towards this for more than a decade ( not a sudden brand perception trick ) 2) yes, humans crave real presence and social connection. Absolutely with you on that but spatial computing (AR not VR like those metaverse stuff) is a far better alternative than smartphones, for that. Picture two couples at dinner: one looking at their own phones, each consumed in their own digital worlds and the other looking towards each other sharing their digital experiences with a sleek pair of glasses - here, their digital lives could be blended into a single shared experience. That to me is better digital hygiene than what we have now.

Great Video! I'm in the process of learning VisionOS, your videos are super helpful! I Had a question regarding the example of Tony Stark's Map. You mentioned it was a window, but wouldn't that be a Volume? I thought with Windows you can add 3d content to create depth, but the position of his map wouldn't work for a window I believe. I would think it's a Volume in a Shared Space. Just was curious if you see what I'm saying?
@NikhilJacob4 ай бұрын
Hi Scott, thanks and glad you are finding it useful! So the map is essentially a 2 dimensional surface with models popping out of it. The models popping out of it, I suggested could be achieved via model3D api (multiple instances of it) That said, you are also right in saying the same could be achieved via volumes (bounded containers). You can create a volume (a type of window which has depth) and then model the map inside as a horizontal plane with the models added to it. To make the point, the scene was more illustrative than a prescription, as in the scene’s context the same visuals could be achieved via both but ultimately, which one you will end up using, will be dependent on what you are building. The basic litmus test is: if lots of interaction with 2D UI elements required (buttons etc), windows better and if 3D heavy (volumes better).
@Krn7777w4 ай бұрын
As you said if nothing, one can end up learning programming. The skill can be transferred to any other programming language in demand. In the worst case scenario, if the spatial computing or visionOS fails, one would end up learning programming. I have fallen in love with Swift. 😅 Thank you for your videos! I hope you create a complete visionOS development course and continue updating your visionOS development KZfaq playlist.
@NikhilJacob4 ай бұрын
you said it Kiran, can't agree with you more - the worst case is already good plus I highly doubt we would even reach that point. The probability that Apple will take this mainstream in a couple of years, is quite high I believe. It's a pleasure, also a joy to have you in the community. Yes, I am actually planning both course and playlist updates in the coming months.

Only apple users make Venn diagrams, where the world and humanity have no conjunction. ... And the fact that you thought innovation would fix it is actually a sad thing. Being disjunct from reality is great. I've taken drugs as well and I know the delusions of religions and political parties, but apple users are a class of their own. And now they really have their first version of rose tinted glasses. I'm dreading and are excited for the future. That's probably the reason for my anxiety. I don't know, how I landed here, but google probably wanted to send you someone who gives you a reality check. Not that it would work.
