It comes mostly from people writing stories as background information, then telling other players about it. They often hold events where they RP our different ceremonies, sacrifices ECT. It's just a fun way to worldbuild

I remember the green party vs dirt party thing... When I moved into Myrkira I constructed a backyard. There was already grass and moss everywhere and all I did was putting wooden fence. Someone completely and unnecessarily destroyed my yard and wooden fences and then I demanded that those who did that go and fix that. No one did anything so I quit living in Myrkira.
