it was mess duty when I was in...had a turn in the wardroom...pretty cool (had access to the ice cream)...did a tour in the Chiefs mess pretty cool (had access to the fridge)...did a tour in the in the galley where the "Mess Cooks" cooked (had access to the potato peeler, the deep sink, the scullery, and the swab....😮😅... I have to agree if I had a choice (which I did not, on any occasion above) I would most definitely pick the Chiefs mess...you get to know the Chiefs and they get to know you...a win win situation...USS Biddle CG-34...1977-1982... Go Hardchargers Go Navy....

Hey, future sailor here. Thanks for the video. I'm shipping out shortly and geo baching. At the end of your video what did you mean by, "they are usually built into the orders themselves so make sure you're paying attention when you're choosing your orders and that's what it comes with"... and... "make sure you're choosing your orders and that's what it comes with"?

Some things that I think are worth considering bringing: 1. Microfiber camp/ gym towels instead of normal cotton ones. They take up way less space and dry very quickly. 2. A folding backpack instead of just a smaller one. They don’t have rigidity but they can pack down into less space than a brown tshirt and are awesome for day trips. 3. 100 mg caffeine pills (2 packs of 250). Take up no space, one or two can be stored in a pocket to stay up during long watches. Also nice if the ship store is closed. 4. Kindle paperwhite if you’re a reader.

Unrelated to this, and love you videos great info, but are you able to make a video for family members. I leave in about a week, and im putting together links for my wife and dad to reference to, like bootcamp.navy.mil, going over the base map for graduation, etc. but could also use some info on things like deers, or like when my wife and our son can go to the nearest base to make an appointment to get their dependent cards, things like that??
@Danj109519 күн бұрын
I leave in a week for rtc. Probably not enough time, but for others could you make a video that breaks down the ships of the navy for education, learning from cv vs ddg, etc?
@Danj109519 күн бұрын
Great info thanks a lot. Definitely never been explained to me, leaving in a week!. In USMC recruit training I only had firewatch 1hr during night if was my night (rotated about every 2 days or so) or if you're house watch which was you didn't go to chow for whatever reason or volunteered not to and you watch the house (barracks) with another recruit, cleaning, while everyone is at chow.

So if they have that red rope they are Chiefs?
@strangebrew1231Күн бұрын
no the red rope means they're an RDC. Petty officers and Chiefs both wear one. The all khaki uniform is a chief, khaki shirt with black pants is a petty officer. On the NWUs if they have an Eagle they're a petty officer and if they have an anchor they're a chief
@sksnumber121 күн бұрын
Minutes 18-end 1) if they're on probation and mess up further, they'll be reverted 1 (or even 2 weeks) - sent to the company behind them to re-do the week and delay their graduation. 2) RAMP is a "punishment platoon" something no other branch has...the JAGs from the DoD decided that they were too much like correctional custody so recruits assigned to it should have all tha rights of receiving an Article 15 and among other things, consult with an attorney...so all DoD branches did away with it. USCG is not DoD so they still have it. Who's hard core now? 3) you pointed out the guy "quick stepping" in the hallway...that's literally what you're required to do. Be loud, be fast. 4) yes, Fly Away = get away from me. 5) Week 4, everyone fills out their "Dream Sheet" listing preferred District/Station location/Specific type of station/type of cutter or even a specific cutter. Most actually get pretty close to exactly what they want, but the needs of the CG come first...if you're at the top of the class, you may get exactly what you asked for...at the bottom and you'll get what no one else wants. End of week 5 you find out where your going. Some enlist with guaranteed district - but, you cannot get guaranteed disteict for the districts where Hawaii and Florida are located because everyone wants those. Also, in the CG you pick your rate (job) and once you go to A school (specialized school for your chosen rate) you again fill out a dream sheet but this one has a list of assignments equal to the number in the class and you rank them, ie 1 - STA Kauai, 2 - STA Key West, 3 - CGC Eagle, etc. They then assign based on class rank...1st in class will get their 1st choice, 2nd in class will get their highest ranking choice among those still available, etc. Different people have different reasons for where they pick, some want Alaska, some Guam, some Oklahoma...so rankings from one person to the next can be wildly different and most get one of their top 3 picks.

I love when NON-CG military try and talk about the Coast Guard because really, they are as clueless as your average non-military citizen. So, some corrections (minutes 1-8)...1) USGB does deploy, although shorter than the Navy (60-90 days at the most, usually), they go all the way west to Japan and south to Antarctica. 2) they have participated in every major war since like WWI (or even earlier?) - in wartime they transfer to DoD and become a part of the Navy and support alongside the Navy. At Normandy, guess who was driving the boats? It wasn't the Navy. 3) yes, CG ODUs are fire-resistant (which has led to problems lately since one of the chemicals was found to be harmful to the environment and finding a replacement has caused shortages). 4) my son graduates bootcamp next week and yes, they still train with rifles - unlike the Navy, once they reach E4 they are Federal Law Enforcement Officers...they board vessels and take drug runners, illiegal migrants, etc in to custody...they don't always want to comply. In boot camp they have firerms training and marksmanship awards. 5) why would someone join the Navy and soend their whole enlistment just training to do a job instead of the CG where you are literally saving lives daily? 🤣...you should have joined the USCG. 6) yes, this is a REAL branch of the US military and gets ALL the game benefits (including post-9/11 GI bill) as every other branch). 7) yelling at USCG bootcamp has a purpose - it's not "just to get yelled at" - emergencies don't happen in calm, quiet seas...emergencies happen in terrible weather and the only way to hear each other is to yell...loud...which is why USCG recruits typically lose their voices by week 5. Engine rooms are loud and if there isna fire, you MUST YELL to hear and be heard. So you may never hear yelling again in the Navy after boot, but if you work at all on a boat in the USCG, you WILL hear yelling when you haven't done anything wrong. 8) USCG handles "life and death situations" EVERY DAY...no other branch does...but, that's why other branches don't have the same enlistment qualifications as the USCG.

I went to boot camp back in June of 2018 and my 2 Petty Officer RDCs fought each other, like full on fist fight, in the hallway outside our compartment. Wonder if you were there for that or if it’s now a lessons learned thing.

Also about a week in one of the guys that was in my DEP tried to commit un aliving by banging his head on the floor. The guy was really bad at following instructions so he got lots of attention from the RDC’s. From my interactions with the guy he wasn’t all the way there. Like some mental problems. Idk which one maybe autism. Wonder if you’ve ever had a similar situation and if you’ve ever seen particular recruits who really are not fit for the military but the recruiters pushed them through anyway.

Hey @askardc, i was wondering about more in depth prep for becoming an RDC and i know alot of ppl will call me crazy for saying this, but I'm thinking about pursuing this as a means to be more professionally developed and knowing how to be a better person in the navy. Im 5 yrs of service at the moment and i would like to know how i can prepare myself in the long run so the next time im up for shore duty, i can apply for these orders with confidence. Thank you for your time! 👍🏻

Hey! @askardc, I was wondering about RDC more in detail because I want to explore challenge options as I progress professionally in my career. I just made 5 years in the navy and read that 6 year minimum is required to be eligible, what can I do to prepare ahead of time so next time I choose a shore duty billet, I can be somewhat confident in selecting RDC orders? Thank you! 👍🏻
