I consider the fall of rome to be in 1922 with the dissolution of the ottoman empire and the destruction of the title "king of the romans" held by the ottoman sultan.

I think doing it the way they did early on post 1789 is better and we should go back to that . I think it would relieve us from much lessl the special interest advertisement and money corrupting our current elections . I would also advocate going back to state legislators electing our Senators fir the same reasons. Thank you for this illuminating video .

Wow..... enjoying your channel so far. Your topic selection and presentation style are VERY good. You don't need a lot of flashy editing - your topics, script, illustrations, and presentation style are highly effective. Also enjoyed "The REAL reasons European colonialism was possible" and "Why precolonial Africa didn't have the wheel" VODs - these types of questions come up a LOT in online discussions. Only 21 videos though? Do you have another channel or a book for sale?

Many of these traditions still exist across Europe. For example, in Germany, if you move into a new neighborhood, you are expected to throw a party at your house and invite your neighbors. This is to allow them the chance to officially get to know you, and neglecting to throw this party will be seen as rude and disrespectful

The Carl Sagan example is really good because honestly a great way to stop yourself from being dogmatic or dismissive of someone who’s saying something that may be false is just pretend you’re talking to Carl Sagan. You’d never talk down to Sagan he’s too cool. We shouldn’t do that to other people either.

I think overall, the technological superiority theory is bs, with one major exeption, European naval technology and navigation techniques. This gave them exponentially stronger logistical and power projection capabilities, while the inca and aztecs were only able to draw resources, support, and attack European forces within a very limited range, Europeans could draw support from their unattackable metropols, Africa or any colony of theirs in America. I think this is true to a lesser degree in regards to asia as well, there was pretty much no credible threat of Indionesian or Indian powers attacking say portugal or spain in there homelands, while the Portuguese were attacking south asian countries in the 1500s with impunity.

Love how he says (paraphrasing) ‘yeah bears and wolves are a big problem, also boats’ and then does not elaborate on what to do. Then again based on what I know about boars, if you arrive in the woods and encounter one there really isn’t much you can do…

Do you think "the burning of the library of alexandria" could in some ways be interpreted as a methaphor for intentional selective knowledge destruction for means of misinformation used by rulers throughout our history. History, after all, is written by the victor. Examples could be state sponsored book burnings, pillaging during conquest, or even the council of nicea. All of these events have in some way erased a part of our past. "The burning of the library of Alexandria" invokes an emotional response that encapsulates all these above events into a single concise story.

I gotta disagree with this guys entire idea that wheels aren’t useful unless you have livestock to tow them. I’m in Indonesia now and it’s there’s hundreds of people pushing carts. Carts to carry their goods to their homes (even if they aren’t merchants themselves) carts to sell food, carts to have little pop up shops… carts carts carts

Side note: It isn't just that the "Byzantines" saw themselves as the Romans, it's that their polity, their state, was the unbroken continuation of the Roman Empire up until its fall, they were for all intents and purposes the Romans after the western half fell

1) Britain at the time was one of the most scientifically and technologically advanced nations. 2) there was abundant coal and iron deposit close to the surface level in the british isles. 3) since they had to pump out all the water from coal mines steam engine was invented and refined.

Malaria reached the height of its endemicity in northwest and north Europe in the Early Modern Age (late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries), mainly due to high population densities in coastal areas and a variety of human interventions, like the construction of embankments, floodgates, canals and harbors. Surprisingly, the increase in disease frequency occurred despite a general drop in temperature, which began halfway into the sixteenth century, lasted for 150-200 years and was so pronounced that it was termed the Little Ice Age. The area of malaria distribution was the greatest it had ever been at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. At that time, malaria was highly prevalent in southern Europe while its northernmost limit ran along the 64° N parallel from central England to southern Norway, central Sweden and Finland and Northern European Russia.
