When I bought my current car a few years back, I counted it be the last car purchase. I planned on stop driving and taking self-driving taxies before this car runs its course. At the time, a university friend working in Tesla assured me that self-driving will happen in time. Now I am not so sure.

I was truely horrified by the level of debt in the over 64. Not sure if this is the same in the UK. I do gave fruends over 65 who still work, one because of finances and the other as a way of engaging with the world. Keep on posting.

It’s pretty bad for carrying that level of debt, but low interest rates have tempted many to borrow

If it's true about mortgage rates in other countries not being stable. Why do people not rebel and demand the laws be changed? Out property tax laws were changed by Proposituon 13 years ago in California so they are stable and can't be raised. Also living here my utility bills are negligible. No need for air conditioning and minimal heating in the winter.

I was in a very similar thought process as you. Fortunately, I sold my house to a wonderful family but then I downsized, built a much smaller house and paid for it outright. I'm in the process of searching a possible second residency in another country, but I plan to keep my primary owned home until I either need the money or find another place I am entirely happy with. My outlook completely changed once I owned my home fully. That sense of security was overwhelmingly welcome. House value does not matter to me as the security is what I wanted. I retired early which was my goal all along and knowing that as long as I can pay my taxes, I don't have to worry about a roof over my head. No mortgage is freeing. I feel like the there is always someone willing to buy a home. At least here in the US there is a housing "shortage". You may not get the price you want, you may make a killing, who knows? I hear you on the costs of owning a home, as well as there is upkeep, which is a real problem since I plan on traveling a lot. But still, I don't plan on selling until I have a solid plan in place. You guys sound like you have a pretty good setup. That is a different level of freedom absolutely. That freedom to close the door and go is priceless as well. Kudos for no regrets.

At my workplace you could use to come back and retire 3 times (you aquired a pension still and it paid more like a consultant) but now they got rid of that and they don't do part time work in my area which is IT (computers). So when I retire there would be no going back to making as much as I do here.I have planned and saved and am paying off everything but not the last of my house. I got divorced a long time ago and bought my own home so I am still paying on it. I will use the intrest to take out on my taxes. My area in Los Angeles has such high rent rates it costs more to rent than my house payment. I don't want to unretire once I leave. I never counted on Social Security to be my only retirement. I would like to volunteer to give back to the community. We will see! I want to retire in a year and a half!

Love you guys and listen to all your videos but the way Tina speaks kind of drives me crazy. The didn't we? Couldn't we? Right, Norm? Was it? It sounds to me like needing constant confirmation/affirmation, a lack of confidence. I know she doesn't lack it but it just drives me crazy. Almost unhearable. Just my honest feedback. My personal opinion and a way I think this channel can improve.

Just a comment that’s a warning…in the US Social Security was NEVER meant to be a retirement. It’s ‘supplemental’ income. You’d better have more than SS to survive on.

If you’re ready for it, it’s great. If you don’t have a steady income in retirement, get ready for a rough ride. Start young, invest (easier than ever to do) in ETFs to start at least, live within your means if possible.

To me retirement is a word that needs to be retired. We are living longer, costs always increase, we have skills and talents that we can offer, people's relationships/marriages end and more. To those of us who are +50. Hopefully your 30 year old self wrote a letter to you about prudent living and savings practices. And having a home as a retirement nest egg to me is an ingredient in the financial wellbeing, not a panacea on it's own. Because when you sell, you have to go somewhere. I cheer for you all and I would encourage a shift from retirement to freedom from core hours and pursue side hustles that pay and that you enjoy for as long as you like. Tina/Norm. Keep up the wonderful content. It's thought provoking and helpful. Have an awesome day.

Yes, my 79-year old husband still works 3 days per week. This money goes towards our mortgage principal, our property taxes, and savings. By the way, I talked to my mortgage lender yesterday and I asked him is there are ANY rent controlled apartments in SW Michigan and he said "No, just in big cities like New York etc So rent controlled apartment are just not an option for most of us in the US. Rents are going up here without any assets being accrued. Having a mortgage is the "norm" here unless you married young, both worked fulltime, raised children together and never got divorced. The average cost of a home in my area is $350.00--$400.00 with property taxes running $5,500.00 annually. Yes you can rent, but apartments rents are running $1,500 (one bedroom) to $2,500 per month (two bedrooms.) I have a mortgage payment because when my IRA savings runs out, I will need to sell my condo to have enough money to live on the rest of my life. Average cost of living here runs $4,500-$5,000 per month for a couple with health insurance, Medicare and just one vehicle.

UnRetirement is one fear that keeps me from making the jump into retirement. I certainly do not want to drive taxi in my 70-s or stock shelf in stores in my 80-s like some of Japanese seniors do. Pre-retirement earning power is a lot more than unRetirement. It is better to make enough money and pay of debt before retiring.

I don't know anyone who has unretired. I do have many friends that can't retire because they still have mortgages, car loans, second mortgages etc. People made a lot of ridiculous decisions when interest rates were low. Both my best friends and their spouses make over $200,000/yr and can't afford to retire because they have so much debt. Meanwhile, dh and I have lived a very modest life, in the same small house, used cars etc. We still pack sandwiches on road trips. BUT..we have freedom, health and less stress.

The bottom line is cashflow management! Every retiree should know how much reliable monthly income they will have from all sources. Their budget for expenses has to be below that threshold, with a buffer that's eventually used for unplanned expenses. This was my job in corporate America for 30 years, so it's really easy for me to do this in retirement (with household finances).

Sadly, for many workers who are 65 and over in Canada, they will not be eligible for group benefits if they become sick or injured. I know someone who is 65 and became injured at work (unionized job) and was only eligible for medical EI recently. Google article “Check your policy - some group benefits change, or vanish, when you turn 65”

Retirement doesn't have to be a one way street. I retired at 55 , 10 years ago, and worked at contract IT gigs and ran a photography business when I wanted to. In March 2020, we had just returned from back to back cruises, and entered lockdown. I was more than happy to work at IT from home for the next 18 months. Didn't need the money in particular, but why not? I enjoyed the work.

Just before we retired we bought a second home in Como, northern Italy. We paid for it outright and it is one of the best things we have ever done. We use it as a base to travel around Europe and spend about 4 months there each year. We still have our family home in London and have no plans to downsize. Our grown up children come out to stay with us or use the apartment when we are not there - and they love it too. For me the thing is not “not what you shouldn’t buy” but budgeting within your means, so if you want an expensive car and can afford it, why not? I think it would have come across better if they had said “these are the things we don’t buy” because everyone has different needs, requirements and most importantly budget.

You are kind of unretired yourselves with this channel. I teach yoga in the mornings. I often think about fully retiring but don't know why I wouldn't keep doing this even 3 days/week for as long as I can. The extra money is helpful but it also keeps me active and the people who attend are wonderful. If people don't have enough (or any) from work pensions, government pensions are woefully small and I'm not sure how anyone can live on them, especially if they are single.

I was lucky to semi-retire but still work for our company (not getting paid but saving us a lot) But I have talked with many older workers that were working to pay off medical/hospital expeseses for them or their loved ones. In the US they/we don't take care of these people which I find very sad.
