how long do you soak the teeth in vinegar water?
@snow3017Күн бұрын
You got me thinking. I have 100's of teeth that have the tip missing, from a tiny bit to 1/3 or 1/2 of the tooth. However, i don't have 100's of tips. I have a couple. I am sure some were tiny shatters, but i'm wondering why i dont find more 'tips'. Odds are I am just not eagle-eyed enough i guess ;) Seems while you were down basking in the florida sun, i was up in the arctic circle. While i did have 24 hours of sun there, it wasnt exactly diving weather, at least not without special gear!

For the tooth that was in the vinegar water too long that still has a small bit of shell stuck to it, just use a dental pic the scrape that off, it should come off pretty easily. I left a tooth in vinegar too long once and it got that cloudy look to it, when you make it wet it looks normal again, I heard putting a little bit of mineral oil on it keeps it looking like it’s wet - I haven’t tried that yet Great finds!

Do you ever find Chubutensis? If so, how do you differentiate them from megalodon and angustidens?
@blackriverfossils3 күн бұрын
yes we find chubs but here in Charleston usually they are all worn because our miocene-pleistocene formations are generally reformulated. sometimes we find formation outcrops where there are nicer chubs too. they are easy to differentiate from megalodons because megs don't have cusps at all, whereas on chubs they are like little serration bumps where the root and blade meet. angustidens have a more distinct separation between the cusps and the blade, like an obvious triangle sticking out of each side of the root / blade.

moving water piles similarly shaped and sized things together. ancient rivers during the ice age eroded previously deposited and fossilized teeth and pushed them into piles like this.

there are other fossils including whales and ice age mammals, just not in this video. the shark teeth are beat up because they have been tossed around in the waves and flowing water over millions of years before I found them

Yep, always take the anchor rope down. Think the dive operators always throw one out with the anchor. lol
@blackriverfossils7 күн бұрын
i don't want pity teeth but i guess that does happen sometimes. my theory with the anchor line is the captain navigates to GPS coordinates and drops the anchor right there, so you know you're usually gonna be on it at the bottom of the line. in black water rivers the anchor line is the only way to keep from being washed away from the boat by the current while you descend.

Mammoth and Florida for you are like peanut butter and jelly. From the thumbnail i was thinking you went on some crazy diet, little did I know it was just the weezling sporting a p0rn stash. Not a ton of stuff, but any day on the water is better than a day in the office!

it was nice to dive with him again. now that he's grown up he doesn't come out as much. another guy on the boat found a mammoth tooth too but his was gigantic, the size I prefer my PB&J. It was truly better than a day at work!

So strange that Florida was mainly a Meg nursery, and very few mature teeth are found here, but there were once behemoths with 7" teeth in South Carolina almost to the foot of the Appalachians. It's not uncommon to find juvenile teeth in SC. So it always makes me wonder why so few mature teeth are found in Florida. Like Florida was only a nursery, but SC & NC were both. Always struck me as odd.

@moemuggy49718 күн бұрын
@@yochriswya The peace river is tough. Anywhere the public can access has been picked over for decades.
@blackriverfossils7 күн бұрын
i don't know the reason for sure, but megalodon were gigantic animals so they probably had a large range. florida was likely a better environment for juveniles to mature. I know I find way more whale fossils up here in the carolinas than in Florida so it could be as simple as there was just more for the big sharks to eat here.

the water wasn't too deep where we were diving - only about 30 feet. i actually did see a small shark on day 2. I dropped off the boat first and when i got close to the bottom i saw him swim away. i tried to get my camera out but he was FAST! maybe he would have hung around longer if he was a little bigger but i think he knew he wasn't the top of the food chain. it was the first time i ever saw one down there.

You did good on those dives! I am trying to line up a course that meshes with my schedule because I am wanting to do some SCUBA hunting in the Florida rivers. Venice will have to get some love also, but I am hoping for some pristine fossils washed out of the layer in some rivers once I get certified. I had to comment on Diva’s video that I knew she would be leaving hers as found! I’m equally unsurprised by your inclination to see what the tooth really looks like. I likely would also! Looking forward to your next video!
@blackriverfossils8 күн бұрын
some scuba shops have private certification classes that are 1 on 1 with the instructor and that might be your best bet for matching up with a schedule. that's what I did when my son got certified because he did the classwork online and then did his checkout dives in the gulf when we went down for a week. i left some crust on some of the venice teeth I found over the past few years because diva has a point - land teeth don't have that and once you take it off, they look like all the others. I'm back to taking it off now. I have enough dead barnacles and shells in my meg drawer lol! she's proud of that meg she found this trip. it was her best one yet and its taken her several trips to get one. its probably awesome looking under all that but we'll never know!

@blackriverfossils12 күн бұрын
@@DarkNinjaShark actually that's part of one of the next couple venice videos i am gonna do but since you asked i use 50/50 apple cider vinegar and water and before I put any teeth in there i throw a shell in and let it sit overnight to take the bite out of the vinegar so it is gentler on the teeth. test it out on a broken tooth to see how you like it but i've had good luck with that method.
