I have been fortunate to rent a 400sq foot cabin on the beach, its rustic, and cheap unusual in Canada. But I can imagine that the locals would be hard pressed to appreciate tourism driving up costs , rent and food wise whether it be Romania , or the Balkans. And of course the need for 2 bathrooms and 2 bedrooms for a couple, seems excessive. How much space does one really need.
@bonnerescutv
@bonnerescutv 7 күн бұрын
Great insight and that is very rare anywhere. I think most people who understand how finances work on a global scale will understand that more tourism brings more money to the area. Creating more jobs and providing more opportunities for more money. Personally my wife and I lived together in a 800 sq ft apartment when we first got married but ever since we have increased our space but to each their own. Everyone has their ideals and needs in their own living circumstance.

Beautiful documentary. Did you know that our Romanian currency and your currency has a common ancestor called Leeuwendaalder (Lion Taler) ? We took first name (due to that heraldic lion displayed on the reverse of the coin). The word thaler is pronounced as taaler in English. In Dutch and Low German, the initial consonant softened to become daler. The English adopted this form and eventually changed its spelling to the modern dollar.

@@bonnerescutv As a historian who knows heraldry, I can confirm Nemo's statement. It is 1000% true! (I typed 4 zeros on purpose, you know?). What he forgot to tell you is that the Bulgarian Leva has the same origin - the Dutch Leeuwenthaler (Leweendaller), which served as currency in the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century. So we could say that the US Dollar, the Romanian Leu and the Bulgarian Leva are cousins!

7:08 Not sure what photos you’ve seen but Piața Sfatului in Brașov always looked like that, even in the 1800s and before. Almost all historic European towns have a huge square like this. These were gathering places during Medieval times and things like open markets, hangings or festivals took place in these squares. Brașov managed to “escape” from Ceaușescu’s hands (Sistematizare) barely like many other cities in Western Romania (Transylvania). You might’ve noticed that cities in Transylvania still retain their historic centers and are not that filled with commie blocks (and if they are, they are located outside the historic center), unlike those in the East and South (Which is also why many people mainly visit the cities of Transylvania and not the rest of Romania, and also Ryan’s video too is an example of this too). That’s because Ceaușescu mostly focused on “changing” the cities in Eastern and Southern Romania, neglecting and considering Transylvania not worthy of his majestic plans. Not to mention cities like București, Ploiești or Galați were almost erased by air raids from WW2, which only encouraged Ceaușescu to demolish everything. The 1977 earthquake that damaged Southern Romania was also a reason.

Honestly I might have just mis read the map when I was looking at it and thought I was looking at piața sfatului but it was some other area. I am so glad you had all of that knowledge because honestly I wasn’t 100% sure why every place had a huge central area to meet and was beautiful. You’re awesome for leaving this comment and helping my knowledge and everyone else’s!

Indeed, he probably heard about Bucharest, our capital, and thought every city got the same treatment. To be clear, Ceausescu did demolish millions of houses, and build lots of communist style apartment block districts, but not every city was raised to the ground. Bucharest was demolished the most because it was the capital, but also because of the massive 1977 earthquake that destroyed a lot of old buildings and killed a lot of people. So not only that Ceausescu wanted to rebuild the city but it was also a necessity as most homes were from the inter-war period and they were quite dangerous during earthquakes. But when it comes Brasov, Sibiu and other cities and towns kept their original architecture and the new apartment blocks were built on the outside, most of them called "worker's sectors". So these old medieval cities kept their original squares. And btw, that's a very small square compared with what Ceausescu needed. I mean in Bucharest you can have up to one million people in front of the Parliament Building. Compared with that place this one seems like a joke.

I had to stop at minute 2. The Merry Cemetary is in MARAMURES ! not near Suceava and definetly not in the nord-east of Romania, not in Moldova or Bucovina(the region where Suceava situates). MARAMURES county situates at the nord of Transylvania and at the west of Bucovina. It consists of 4 different historycal countries(as we say) : Codru country, Chioar country, Lapus country, Historycal Maramures country. This region is unique in its culture, tradition, identity, diversity, and is neither in Transylvania nor in Moldova. Please do not misinform because it is important.
