Of course this is a terrible tragedy and contemplating someone's last words is horrifying. But beyond that, I cry for the lack of facts and notion of how people commenting here are unaware of preventable disasters in their everyday lives. We have had the most powerful learning tool in history, the internet, for decades now, and still commenters need to be reminded to google your best friend, Wikipedia, where a simple reading of [ Apollo_1 ] would eliminate all the repeated misstatements, corrections, and misunderstandings in the comments. The question is not the sheer horror of imaging your death, but imaging at what point in your own everyday lives are you able to take actions that prevent foreseeable accident or injury. The numerous US accidents preceding the Apollo 1 fire did not need to be as secret as Russian space program failures to be heeded; they just needed caring people to use logic, science and common sense, to say wait a minute. We don't need to be perfect, just smarter than yesterday, to learn to apply quality control and six sigma techniques to drive out fear and error. Yet, like Diogenes, I search to find the rare comment that appreciates that Apollo 1 had smart, caring people, like today, but somehow, like today, fear and error crept thru, as in most disasters, to compound themselves.
