That last note changes nothing for me on my sax, it just sounds like low C. Watching the pads closely, nothing changes other than a couple levers going up, but all the pads are still down, essentially doing nothing. What is wrong?

I regularly use 4 different fingerings for Bb depending on the situation. This issue can be a bit contentious in the sax community. Venting is considered to be best with the standard fingering and some would say that standard and bis are the most optimal choices, while discounting the use of the B/F or B/F# and suggesting the possibility that the latter two fingerings have possible tuning deficiencies. On my saxophones there's not too much tuning discrepancy that would stop me from using any of them. The B/F choice does have a softer sound, but I think that that is sometimes mis-judged as possibly flat when in reality, the timbre is more the difference than the actual tuning. As good saxophonists, it's our responsibility to learn all about the tuning differences from note to note on our horns so we can train ourselves to make the small embouchure adjustments needed to play in tune. I think the fact that all the right hand keys depress the bis key is suggesting that that mechanical design choice was on purpose.

Hi Michael, thanks for your comment. I agree that all four variations for playing B-flat are useful to know and as you mention they do offer some nuances to the sound as well. My approach with these videos is to make them helpful and actionable for saxophone beginners. That leaves room for more advanced studies further down the line as the basics are covered. I appreciate that you took the time to write. You make valid points that adds to the discussion 👍 Play On! Greger

Hi there! Thanks for commenting. For a saxophone beginner it's important to learn the basic fingering for Bb, which is what's displayed in the video. The Bis fingering is a great alternate fingering to learn as well but in addition to the basic fingering. I've written more about the Bis fingering here, learnsaxophone.com/bis-key-on-saxophone/, which explains my take on it. Play On! // Greger

Sir, Good Morning, I am from India. While searching on Google, the weight of Alto saxophone is maximum 5lbs. But Yamaha YAS 280 Alto saxophone weight is 13lbs, Jean Paul AS 400 INTERMEDIATE Alto saxophone weight is 5 lbs, Jean Paul AS 400 Brass Alto saxophone weight is 11 lbs, Jean Paul AS 400 Gold Plated Alto saxophone weight is 13 lbs. I am confused on weight. Suppose I want to purchase Jean Paul Alto saxophone. Which is Suitable for me? Please help me. Thank you very much 🙏🏿
@LearnSaxophone8 ай бұрын
Hi there 👋 The standard weight of an alto saxophone does not differ that much. The slight variation comes from the mixture of brass material used to make the saxophone. It also have an impact on the overall sound. However, if you are just getting started playing saxophone you will do fine with a basic alto saxophone model like the Jean Paul AS 400. It’s better priced than the Yamaha YAS 280 Alto sax, which is almost double the price. Price do reflect on quality so if you have the budget I’d recommend that go for the Yamaha. Alto sax is in the key of Eb so you basically have to transpose the instrument to the same key as the piano, concert pitch.

Nice, thanks for posting this. So the embouchure changes a little for the different registers?
@LearnSaxophone8 ай бұрын
Yes, the embouchure can change slightly between the lower and higher register. You should aim for small adjustments rather than changing it all together. A common thing that can happen especially among beginners. You can check your own embouchure while playing by standing in front of a mirror. It’s a good way to see what you are doing and how you are moving / positioning your fingers as well as you saxophone embouchure. Hope that helps! Buy a Fiberreed and dont worry about anything anymore is the right way at least for me :D
@LearnSaxophone Жыл бұрын
Plasticitet cover and synthetic reeds are definitely good options too. The different types of reeds all have benefits and drawbacks in my opinion. However, for beginners I do recommend regular cane reeds as it is common to break quite a few of them…. So in that case it can become a bit expensive with Fibracell reeds. Beyond the beginner level however I do agree with you that Fibracell can be a really good option too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! And for watching 👍👍 More to come 🎷 / Greger

Why when I play the C like you show. I turn on the tuner and it said it Eb ? So how can I set my finger to get the C? What is the rule to play the basic notes
@LearnSaxophone8 жыл бұрын
Hi Thai! That's right, it should say Eb on the tuner. Here's why: There are instruments that are tuned after what's called "concert pitch". Instruments like the piano, bass, guitar and flute fall into that category. Playing an C on any of those instruments will show up as a C on your tuner, as they are all in concert pitch. Your Alto sax on the other hand is an Eb (E-flat) instrument. That means that a C on your alto will be an Eb concert pitch note. One way to look at it is that there's a minor third interval between your alto note and the concert pitch note. An example: Let's say you have a piano and play the C on it. In order to find "the same note" (sounding the same) you need to play the note a minor third down on your alto sax. That's an A on the alto. If you have a piano and look at that interval visually it will make more sense to you it its the first time you learn about this. I hope that helped you, Play on! Greger

+Saxophone Hub I kinda understood now, so whenever I look at the sheet music, to play the same note show on the sheet music i need to go down 1.5. For example C in the sheet = play A on the sax and D on the sheet = B on the sax right ? To play the whole song, I need to convert every single note from sheet music to note of saxophone right ? Is there any tip or rule so I can play the song right away without things what is this note on sax ?
@LearnSaxophone8 жыл бұрын
+thai nguyen Nope! You can read the sheet music as written if you are playing on your own. You only have to transpose if you have a concert pitch note (often referred to as a lead sheet) and want to play together with a piano player or any other C instrument.
