Wondering if you have any thoughts on the depth required for a water table? I built a small CNC machine that I plan to attach a plasma torch to. I've almost got it ready to test but I'm working out a few bugs. The machine itself is made from v-groove aluminum extrusions and running Nema 17 motors. I can easily carry the entire 1000mm x 500mm frame and gantry setup. So it's going to be quite portable. I want to build a water table in the garage so I can place the machine on top of it and do a cut whenever I need to make a part. I was thinking of using an old refrigerator door as a water table. I'm just wondering how thick of a door I need to use to prevent the torch from blasting through it. Checking out your other videos right now and subscribe. Thanks for the info.

How do you start the cut? My handheld Plasma cutter needs to touch the metal once to start the arc, how does this work on the machine?
@MitchGreeley4 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, If grounded properly it should work. The torch isn't that high above aprox. 1.5mm. Starting the cut while touching the material can also damage your consumables. The machine is a Hypertherm 45amp.

Where did you source your board material and the pins they rest on? Nice build!
@MitchGreeley4 жыл бұрын
@Keeb Thanks! The pins are just flat allen head bolts (8mm) that are screwed into the slotted nuts in the aluminum profile. I tighten them down so they press against the profile and hold in place. The wood is around 9mm I think. Its a special type of laminated plywood commonly found here in Europe. One side is rough and one smooth. It's really light and strong.

I like it! Are you using 80x20? Can you do a video of how you collapse the whole and part of the structure? Moreover can you describe the join point for frame and legs and slidies in detail?
@MitchGreeley5 жыл бұрын
It's 40x40 "energy" aluminum profile. Basically the lightest version of this kind of material. The join point is a fixing system associated with this type of material. There are slotted nuts that slide down into the profile. It's a pretty common material used in the automation industry with endless possibilities. I'll try and do a video in the next months to explain in better detail

Great idea! How did you attach the rails for the pull-outs? It would be great if you could show the whole setting up? Is there anything attached to the van itself?
@MitchGreeley5 жыл бұрын
I attached 2 profile pieces to the floor. The one in the front uses two existing threaded M8 holes in the floor and in the rear I drilled 3 holes and attached 3 M8 screws from underneath the floor into the profile. This gave me two long parallel rails to work with which would be of equal height. I'll post a more detailed video soon.

How do I wire the switch
@MitchGreeley5 жыл бұрын
It's a NC (normally closed) switch on the mounting plate. This runs to the controller and signals Mach 3 during the probing sequence in the Gcode. @ min 2:27 I show the switch engagement.

I use sheetcam because of its wide range of post processors.. probably what you are referring to as macros. These offset values are then hardcoded into the post processors. I'll try and create a video this weekend.

hello!...i had a question....im building a plasma cutting cnc machine on my own and i want to make a floating z torch head in order to probe where my material is and set the ztorch to pierce height........im not sure if this action is created in the mach 4 i am using, a special script you have to type out with gcode and include in the gcode generated from the part in cam software or what?........i want to first understand what exactly is needed and how i all works together, also what type of cam software would you recommend for plasma cutting out parts? thank you so much
@MitchGreeley6 жыл бұрын
I use SheetCam. There is an offset you can put into the post processor, there are many post processor options. (this post processor is what writes the G-Code and tells Mach-3 what to perform.)
@gus32916 жыл бұрын
so sheetcam has this option? (the offset?) will sheetcam make that action repeat at the start of a new part cut out?......like will it send order to probe ? also the probe sensor is activated in the mach 3 settings right ?
@MitchGreeley6 жыл бұрын
Yes it has this option. This action is programmed to execute before your torch fires (in the GCode). This sensor is an input in Mach3. Mach 3 waits for the signal before proceeding further in the Gcode

A guy I know who made his own table cut the supports just a little long , they have to be bent slightly to fit in there , it kinda makes a wavy look , this way he supports last longer , when he does a lot of straight lines , it wont line up exactly with the supports

also.. lead-ins lead-out.. lead-in.. perp .02 lead-out none. that tit at the end of your cut will go away. overcut of .05+/-

@shawneliason7907 жыл бұрын
Man.. your pause after pierce is really long! arent you getting dimples at the pierce point? Especially on thin sheet youll melt a lot of material and never get a good clean shape. I know a lot of times this doesnt matter but on lines with no lead-in and really small holes, youll see that a pause of more than 1 sec will blow a big hole.

Thanks for the input! I'll adjust it and see if this improves.
