So I'll probably build a Teensy MIDI router and *just* implement SYSEX lol. Then I'll patch a MidiHub into it -- either that or MidiHub will get off their lazy butts and allow you to send SYSEX messages to do automation.

can this be powered by the usb iphone connector? or do you always need to run power supply to the leonardo board?
@mobypixelАй бұрын
I'm using Apple's camera connect kit that has an external lightning power line. That is what is powering the Arduino while keeping the iPhone charged. On newer iPads with USB-C you can use a USB power bank to send multiple USB devices to the iPad while powering them. So yes, you will need some external power supply for the Arduino. The iPhone's connecter won't send that voltage to your board.
@eross21Ай бұрын
@@mobypixel oh, so it gets power from the usb adapter? you don’t have to plug a do power supply into the onboard power jack?

5:30 does it need all of those buttons setting up? That seems a lot, just to navigate the menus. What do you have to press to see the patch name?
@mobypixelАй бұрын
It's not too bad. You set it up in the minidexed.ini file: github.com/probonopd/MiniDexed/blob/afa72d21aa81a9876b3f9e50f3bd6f4cd56cdac0/src/minidexed.ini#L113 The other option is navigating with a rotary encoder like Floyd Steinberg did in his video. To see the Patch Name I navigated to the performances tab and selected it. I'm not sure of a shortcut for seeing the names if you are deep in the menu stack, but you can change patches with a button press.
@TooSlowTubeАй бұрын
@@mobypixel Thanks. I see two pins there for the encoder, so that would cover turning it, but nothing for the encoder button or built in switch... Is it defined as one of the other buttons? I don't really get how all those other buttons can be replaced with just an encoder, but I assume it has at least the usual built in button in the encoder to do something. I've looked at the documentation a few times but I haven't really got all that far with understanding it.
@TooSlowTubeАй бұрын
@@mobypixel Okay, I've found a bit in Wiki Files, that says "ButtonPinShortcut defines the pin that is used for rotating the rotary encoder knob while the button is pressed. Probably you will want the button that is built into the rotary encoder to be used for shortcuts." I really have no idea what that's trying to say so I guess I'll just have to try it and see what happens.
@mobypixelАй бұрын
@@TooSlowTube Yeah, a the rotary encoder is an endlessly turning potentiometer that can be pressed as a momentary button. I think in MiniDexed one click selects and a double click goes back in the menu. I used one in my Teensy Synth build recently.

Sorry for the super general question, but how new of a mac do you need to make good apps for ipad in your opinion?
@mobypixelАй бұрын
The determining factor is Xcode's required minimum version which is currently macOS 14.0, and the maximum version supported by the Mac. Typically I get a new Mac and it lasts for about 6-7 years before I can't upgrade to the latest Xcode version anymore, because it can no longer update to the latest macOS version. I'm on a 2021 M1 iMac and I'm hoping it lasts me for several more years. I would think any M1 machine and newer would last for a while but it's a gamble. These are the devices that currently support the latest macOS: support.apple.com/en-us/105113

Most interesting, but quite fast paced video. Would like to hear more about MIDIKit. I've seen no connection to AudioKit, and has thought of MIDIKit as a MIDI only (no oscillation), multi platform (not IOS only) tech. Maybe I'm way off. If I was able to follow your speed, I hardly would need to watch :) But I'd love to see more. AudioKit is so big, and I've always run into problems when installing. Has been some time since I tried though.
@mobypixelАй бұрын
Thanks, @evennorthug2585! Yeah, I wanted to make this a high level, 10,000 foot view of what it takes to build an iOS audio app. My other tutorials go into more detail about the actual coding parts--this is more of an introduction video with an AUv3 template at the end. MIDIKit uses CoreMIDI and Swift so it is multi-platform on Apple OS's like iOS, macOS, tvOS etc. You're right that MIDIKit is MIDI only. I'm using it to replace the built-in MIDI support in AudioKit. More specifically, I'm using it to receive messages from a MIDI Controller that I plugged into my device to play notes on the AppleSampler instrument. The MIDIKit Repo itself has some built-in demos and I also go into a little more detail about MIDIKit in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gLpdY7h1v6qlo4k.html AudioKit has been separated into individual Swift Packages so it should be smaller now. The AudioKit Cookbook (github.com/AudioKit/Cookbook ) is a great way to check out the current state of AudioKit as a whole. The core engine is still in the AudioKit package, but other parts have been moved: github.com/AudioKit

I really appreciate your video. Without you, it would be much harder to dive into the world of AudioKit. I've been using your GuitarSamples and was wondering about one thing: Is it possible to play a single note and change its pitch using UIKit? I would like to play some chords using AudioKit but your GuitarSamples only covers a few. It would be really nice if I could just change their pitch without creating samples myself to have consistently sounding chords.
@mobypixelАй бұрын
Thanks, @lucawiehe1995! To change the pitch of a sampler there are a few approaches you can take. AppleSampler has a variable named "tuning" that can be used to shift the entire instruments tuning i.e. instrument.tuning = 12.0 //to shift up an octave. I think the more robust option would be to create a custom AUPreset or EXS file and add the tuned chords to different MIDI notes. In GarageBand's AUSampler or Logic's Sampler, you can tune each note of the keyboard individually. So you could use the same sound file played on various MIDI notes with different tunings. I hope that makes sense.

@@petergregory6185 Plugging in a MIDI Controller with an iPad has a few considerations. A Bluetooth MIDI Controller should work, but you may experience some lag. If you have an iPad with USB-C you can plug in a powered USB hub to connect your MIDI Controller and other USB devices like a keyboard or mouse. If you have an iPad that uses a Lightning connector you will need Apple's camera connect kit to attach a MIDI Controller. If your iPad model needs the camera connect kit, make sure to get the adaptor that has lightning male on one side and USB & power female ports on the other side.
