This is a brilliant overview of garmin pilot. I a an advanced user of GP now, but would have loved to have watched this in the early days. This is youtube you can pause and then play with GP to build memory muscle, just what I needed a few years ago. Well done.

As others have mentioned you need to hit the approach button well before the final approach fix. I sometimes activate it 15 miles before the initial fix if cleared. If you don’t activate it early it will not descend.

@@CamCarrSorry to hear you're not flying, I hope everything is ok and you're up in the air again very soon. Dont let the proverbial cobwebs gather on the controls like so many other young pilots do, only to regret it later in life. Also Id love to see a video of the Bolivar Airport, tried searching on YT but there really are none. I have subscribed to your channel and hope to see a new video again soon!

I’ve bought three from them, a Southwest Airlines 737, a United 747 And a Coast Guard HU-25 Guardian which is especially cool because I used to fly as aircrew when I was on active duty. The green on the back is the original zinc chromate used when the planes were manufactured (except for the Beech Starship) The prices do vary by number of tags made and rarity of the aircraft

I know this is old but do you still like the audio setup or is there something better? I am going to video my sons lessons in our Arrow so it can be a permanent mount for the GoPro. My plane is so loud there is no way to hear anything but engine.

For the GoPro, this is going to be your best bet. If you have troubles getting the GoPro to pick up the sound, make sure that you have the external audio input selected.

I fly an SR20 with the same autopilot. Pressing APR button doesn't immediately activate the approach and climb for the glide path, it just arms it. It won't actually activate until the glide path is intercepted, and if you're doing the ILS it's the same way for the localizer. What I do is when I'm cleared for the approach is just immediately hit the APR button and it'll start it's descent once it gets that glidepath while still functioning on nav, heading, and VS mode normally. You've probably figured this out already since this was posted 2 years ago but figured I would still go ahead and comment lol.

Yes, the cost is $80.00 per year. It’s not insignificant, but well worth it if you fly frequently, or don’t have a GPS on your airplane.

I think it was a combination of 2 factors. The stall speed programmed into the G5 (I believe it’s the published stall speed) is too high, so it caused the stall recovery system to kick in about 5 knots before a stall. I would assume it’s the stall speed at max gross weight. I also don’t think I had the airport programmed into the gps. If it knows that you’re on short final and landing at an airport, this system won’t kick in. Luckily you can override it with brute force or by holding the AP disconnect button, but the programmed speeds are definitely something that people need to take into consideration - it would be terrifying to be in that situation in IMC and not know what was happening.

Just wondering about the positioning of the GNC500 in your fitout. You seem to have it out of reach of the front passenger. Was that about space in your panel or something else? I am considering fitting one in my 1967 Arrow and I like the idea that a passenger can just hit the blue button if there were any issues with pilot incapacity. Thoughts?

What do you need to get your iPad to receive GPS? Can you legally navigate with it?
@CamCarr
@CamCarr Жыл бұрын
Hi Jeremy! I have mine connected to the transponder. Some Garmin GPS units have the capability as well. If you don’t have or want a GPS in the airplane, Garmin and stratus makes a few different portable units. It can legally be used for navigation, but it’s not approved for IFR operations.

I always press APR once I pass IAF and am at the altitude listed between IAF and FAF. It works every time. The plane does not descend if APR is pressed at any altitude higher than that altitude. My instructor and I had the same problem of plane not descending but we figured it out. I loved your video and like others said we are all not perfect and we learn from each other. Thank you

I trialed Garmin Pilot. I really wanted to adopt it, but there were too many bugs. For example, all of my track logs looked like your 10:41. That is, it would only record a very short segment of my flight. The people at support seemed to not know anything about it, but there it is apparently on your GP as well. Weight and balance also had some bug which multiplied my empty weight by 10 so I was always out of balance. Finally, it was harder to link GP to my GPS 175 than it was to link the other top app. Boy, did I really want to adopt this app. It has a lot of great things going for it as you showed.
@CamCarr
@CamCarr 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. It’s far from perfect, and unfortunately I haven’t noticed Garmin trying to make attempts to fix the bugs. I agree that the logbook feature is practically useless. But having said that, I do really enjoy it for looking up airport info, basic nav, and having a sectional that is easy to move around.

Hey there. Just found your channel by looking for "Flying the ILS into KSGF". I live out in Ava MO, I took my written in Bolivar and flew solo there for that so I have some knowledge of the bolivar airport. I got my PPC back in 2013 but stopped flying in 2015 due to moving and job changes. Recently though, I've begun to get back into it. I did my flight review a couple weeks ago... it was rough, but I got through it. My flying was still good, I was just a little weak on the procedural stuff. I'm hoping to get a few more practice flights in before the fall because I'm planning to start the OTC Aviation program which should start me in the IFR portion. I've been studying with Sporty's IFR ground school since November but I decided that I would just take the plunge for OTC. Hope to see more content of local airports. I'd invite you to ours here in Ava (KAOV) but its currently closed for new runway lighting and papi lights.

I haven’t been to Ava before, but I’ll have to add it to my list! I love Bolivar, as it has just enough going on to keep it interesting but it’s not too busy. Good luck with the IFR training, I hope to get mine in the coming years.

Let me comment. I am ASEL licensed but have not flown in years. I am attempting to gather up the knowledge on avionics that have been developed in last 39 years. So you have this IPad with Garmin Pilot. What is not covered in the beginning is how this device and program receives the data first and foremost. So if we are going to do a KZfaq video you have to know many viewers might not “get it,” the knowledge of this program without covering the basics. So first tell us what this program does then introduce one to the basic essentials. I’m using an IPad to write this!
@CamCarr
@CamCarr 2 жыл бұрын
Glen, thanks for commenting. I assume you are talking about how the iPad receives the navigation and position data. There are several ways that it can be connected. There are several separate GPS and ADSB receivers to which you can connect to, as I started with the GDL69 from Garmin. Stratus also makes a GPS device. I currently connect to the transponder in the airplane via Bluetooth, and that’s how my iPad receives it’s data. The third option is to have an iPad with Cell/GPS service which will give you limited positioning data at lower altitudes. I hope this helps.
