The water was being pushed to the side and drained out the bottom of the engine bay faster than it could fill, and the air intake is at the top of the engine so it was always in an air pocket.

i dont think people who havent done much offroading can really appreciate how difficult this is. its steep, its at a steep angle which will try and make the truck slide sideways therefore losing all forward traction, its somewhat loose and that is a STOCK truck with STOCK tires and no diff locks -Toyotas Landcruiser crawl control is amazing!
