This is so tricky! Personally, I find educating the client at the start of therapy about what the process involves is really helpful to set expectations and help the client understand how the relationship between therapist and client works. We get complacent as therapists and forget that it’s not a given for everyone to be as familiar with that lay of the land as we are. As a client, I’ve heard these words before in therapy and find it throws me because I feel it’s stating the obvious, that’s why I’m there. There is a lot to unpack. I personally find that something that acknowledges where the story is up to and demonstrates the therapist is following the context is helpful for building rapport and the therapeutic relationship ❤.

Hello, is this only for therapists or can clients take this course as well? Also, is there a link?

It's too bad the wheel has to be reinvented: "the relationship is the therapy" - direct quote from almost first sentence of first presentation in classical orgone therapy (character analytic Reichian therapy) by someone who helped set up the ACO. Remarks about practice by sensorimotor psychotherapy founder at website are almost entirely paraphrases of what anyone would be doing who has received and been in training in this 'classical' approach. The relational aspect is in very early Reich. Experimenting with one's typical modes of being in the world would be a concept familiar to anyone who has learned character analytic principles. Having been certified in Core Energetics (and a three day seminar in Hakomi w Kurtz (i have a copy of 'The Chart')), levels I and II of PI and 3 x 5 days of Pelvic Heart Release w Painter, and multiple weekends w Radix practitioners (plus decades of individual consultation and my own neoreichian and orgone psychotherapy), I am in a good position to see how the very successful destruction of Reich's work by the AMA and FDA set back the practice of psychotherapy by 60+ years, leaving others to so-called found new methods that in fact are rediscoveries. Sorry to rant on: it's hard to find good therapists that have had adequate training and therapy - certainly i can attest to that. I think one of my most profound experiences was making four pilgrimages to Philly to have sessions w the last physician that Reich trained, Dr Morton Herskowitz, who was 99 - 100 years at the time.

I have taken the mindfulness meditation course and have the certificate plus work with individuals with special needs . My mindfulness meditation practice and the counseling I have been doing helps me to realize just how the body remembers the trauma when our minds have forgotten. I do really appreciate you speaking about this

Does sensorimotor require any sort of sensory memory recall and/or sensory imagination? Whether visual, auditory, gustatory, tactile, olfactory, proprioception, kinesthetic, or emotional? I'm asking for multi-sensory aphants who have PTSD or cPTSD and may find huge road blocks to therapy including somatic based modalities like SE or EMDR or even IFS.

Thank you for asking, Andrea! Sensorimotor Psychotherapy does not require any sort of sensory memory recall or imagination. Whatever has happened in the client’s experience is reflected in the movement and posture of the body so we can work somatically without any content or recall. That is one of the reasons why Sensorimotor Psychotherapy can effectively address the effects of preverbal trauma, or trauma and relational issues that are not recorded in autobiographical memory. And, sensory perceptions, emotions, and thoughts often emerge spontaneously with a body-oriented approach.
