what about hand-stitching? any advice? I move around too much to bring a sewing machine with me, so I am much better at hand sewing, and I can make my hand stitches very even, but how to make them straight?

What a beautiful technique ! ...I would like to make an improvisation of this technique, with different materials in case when ban-rol paper is not available to me. But, I also do not have my sewing machine available with me right now; so, I will daydream a few things what I could use instead. The technique you use is so perfect, and is a very helpful problem resolution. I will not be ruining my small silk investment I have in my "hope chest." 💓 Thank u ! 💓

Thank you so much for this video! I played "thread chicken" with my first cross stitch project and now the tail is too short for me to tie the next string on to it. Time to add some tweezers into my cross stitch kit!

I see other methods that require pressing, running a seam, folding near the seam, sewing, cutting... But your method is the very best. I did this two years ago, and it was easy! Then I lost track of this video. I'm so happy I found it again. You are an excellent seamstress and teacher. Thank you for posting.

Using a safety pin to turn fabric or case elastic is much more difficult than the proper tool: a bodkin. Many sewing kits come with one, but people don't know what they are.

I opened the comments to say that I discovered I've been using my seam ripper upside down, and boy am I relieved to see I'm not alone! My defense is that I'm learning as I go, since I never had anyone in-person to learn from. The first time I had to pull out a seam I just went "well, we've got a pointy bit and a hook-y bit, so, uh, I guess you just catch the stitches one at a time and pull them back out the way they went in" and never thought to question it... this new knowledge means much less time wasted in the future, thank you :>

When you use a seam ripper it’s clear to see that the red ball must go inside the seam, not the pointy end, otherwise the fabric will be damaged. It was a no brainer to me, anyway, since I first saw one of these tools in 1990.

That's really cool! I had no idea you could rip seams like that, I always pick one single stitch at a time 😅 I'll definitley be trying this next time I need to unstitch a large piece of fabric!

Will this work to hem a small circle of chiffon like on a butterfly sleeve? Or is it just for straight hems?
