@SteamEngines that's great, it would have ample PSI for the S50? I'm a newbie, just ordered the S50 Casting kit, as a first project. Initially I will test it on compressed air, but it is a steam engine, not a compressed air engine, so I will get a boiler down the track.

@@Adam-fk8oq You should video the build process of your S50, it would create a lot of interest. They run on air, but they really come 'alive' on steam. Have a look at this video, more than ample amount of steam to run two mill engines simultaneously - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtGHdq6ZnNPSYnk.html

If you want very low drag bearings, remove the cages, carefully grind a filling slot, and make them full compliment bearings. If you use Stainless steel bearings, you can change the steel balls to ceramic balls, and wont require any lubrication. Full compliment bearings have 1 less ball than being completely filled. Cages are very draggy. A full compliment bearing with ceramic balls is very quite and will free spin for at least 2times longer than the clean caged bearing with steel balls.
@SteamEngines
@SteamEngines 13 күн бұрын
G'day Neil that is REALLY interesting reading. I appreciate the info. I was so surprised how much of a difference the ball bearing races were being 'open' I'm talking from being sealed and not even spinning one revolution to removing the seals and grease and oiling them to spinning then between 45 - 50 seconds. So your extra step would see even less drag - Cheers Jim

I like the idea you have however the sheaves on a pully are smooth for a reason: The sides provide a smooth surface for the belt to come in contact with. With all surfaces dry, the belt should have no problem transmitting power to or from that pulley. Any rough surface (i.e. the procedure you're applying here) will cause undue wear to belts like these. Spring belts, because they are heat treated steel, would probably wear the sheave out fairly quickly. Since we are talking model steam, to force a pulley with this much torque, I can't see a use for.
@SteamEngines
@SteamEngines Ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment but I disagree, many toy model steam engines such as the massive line of Wilesco steam engines come from the German factory with the drive pulleys already hobbed and they supply spring belts. I've always wondered how the steam engine manufactures hobbed their flywheels and wished to be able to do it....now I know and can replicate it - Cheers Jim
