….AND the fact that he plays BOTH traditional grip as well as matched grip. I would have loved for Buddy to try and tell Louie that “he was holding his sticks wrong.”

Playing the melody on the drums. Sharing accents with the horns. That's Buddy's signature. Mr Smith did the research and the practice. Great job of emulating, sir.

Besides being one of the greatest drummers of all time, Maestro Bellson was the kindest man you could ever hope to meet. A legend in the truest sense of the word.

As I watched, in the beginning I said to myself "nothing new here that I haven't done back in my twenties and thirties - essentially one long snare drum roll at various speeds interrupted by occasional tom and cymbal attacks. Then at 4:16, we get into some serious cymbal work (that you don't see very often), and surprisingly, among this (if you are very attentive you will catch it) a small tribute to John Bonham from his Moby Dick solo. Also a nod to Zeppelin and Bonham's tom/bongo solo work in "Four Sticks" at 5:08 (did you get it - literally four sticks). A great drummer to be sure. But after thirty years of drumming, almost continuous snare rolls used as a solo make me yawn.

My very first album I ever bought was Explosion, I was 16 in 1975. Wore it out!! Got the cd thirty years ago and now I'm a old man. Where did those years go Louie??

I think Mr Bissonette did his musical homework. He quotes Buddy by occasionally exchanging the downbeat to upbeat emphasis, especially around cadences. He also dupes the sax section's sfz's and fp's on snare during their soli. Those were both very Buddy things. Nice tribute, Mr Bissonette. Thanks.

Bissonnette is so versatile and tasteful. His skill on the drumset is world class. And well, with all that he does in this performance, his sense of timing, his dynamics and his swing (after all, he's a jazz player and has played with the likes of Maynard Ferguson), his most impressive feat in this video, was balancing a cat on his head. Bravo!
