I used a propane tiger torch on a large ball of amalgam. The retort design was a little different, old school, with a little water pot on top and convection tubes to move the water in and out of the round jacket covering the condenser tube. It took very little time at all. The Hg just whistled through and left me approximately an ounce of sponge gold. The process took only a few minutes. Maybe the heat has to be more uniform.

I also hit a clay layer for the first time and I thought I accidentally shoveled a pile of human poop

That's worth $100 to me if I found it.
