I grew up in Memphis, and my grandfather and I would walk the banks of the Mississippi River downtown and pick up old bottles. I have hundreds of them. I have all different types. I would like to learn more about some of them. A personal favorite of mine is a clear bottle about four inches tall that is shaped like a human hand. I have boxes of them, but I don't know what a lot of them are, nor am I aware of any way to determine the value of any of them.

Kills me that your 2 Hutch's are common. The ones from my home State are rare or unknown. UGH. Love Hutch's they are amazing! ❤

In 1988 there was a major drought and the DesPlaines River dried up so much you could walk across it. At I-55 and Harlem Av there's a National Forest Preserve for the 1642 portage. The Bottle Collectors of America did a walk through and discarded anything they didn't want. Man did I clean up! I followed them all day.

We have those little stoneware ''ink'' bottles in the UK so it could have been an import. Sometimes, there are fingerprints left in the glaze from the time of manufacture.

The stoneware ink could be as early as 1850s , but I'd be safe at guessing 1860s-70s all day long
@jebbishop-rq2xzАй бұрын
I think they had a long run. 1850 to at least 1900 maybe into the twenties.

That's a great dig fells well done but there's no way in the world I'd be digging in that slop in Chicago on Christmas day it must have been insanely cold.
@cferguson33682 ай бұрын
Seems like finding a non-Chicago bottle would be more unusual because so many companies in Chicago & IL manufactured bottles & ingredients.

Every hole in Chicago does have water in it. It was built on a swamp and the street level was actually raised to accommodate sewers.

If you ment how does blueing work, ? I can tell you this. It's a light die blue in color made your laundry blue and when you washed it the blue would be out of it. If it was still blue you needed to scrub it on the wash boards more . You basically scrubbed till the blue was gone . It was used to make sure the servants were really doing the laundry.
@cferguson33682 ай бұрын
You could be correct that some used it to see if laundry was properly done, never heard of that before. However, at that time, it was manufactured because laundry detergent tended to "yellow" white clothing. The white clothes didn't look clean after washing. Bluing counteracts the yellowing because yellow & blue are complimentary colors. Bluing does not clean; it only counteracts the yellowing. My grandmother used it because the sediment in her well water yellowed white clothing. Bluing is still made & used today today.

Sweet goopy dig! Would be good to mention for the non-diggers all that wetness is due to ground seepage, not poopage! Love those bluing botts as the Giletts are always funky crude, plus they always misspell triple with an extra p as well as some misspell Chineese and blueing with extra e's. Always fun digging error botts. I agree with earlier post of a sauce type bottle and the JJW jar is an oddball. I can’t find any listing and likely scarce if not rare. The Old Dirt Slinger.

A good way to clean the inside of the bottles. Clip copper wire into 1/4 " pieces and pour them into the bottle ,filling the bottle 1/4 full and fill with water half of the bottle. Shake until clean . A funnel can be used to add the copper to the bottle and a strainer to empty the bottle . The copper chips can be reused over and over
