Loved this episode! I'm into Summer Reads, but I also think there's a big pressure on a Summer Read over like, Fall Reads and Winter Reads. I'm reading a lot of books in those seasons too! Right now I'm reading The Starless Sea as part of a book club (very good!!), and also The Ex Hex which is definitely more of a fall cozy witchy read.

Thanks for writing -- and watching! We had a lot of fun putting this one together. Your idea of Fall Reads and Winter Reads sounds like a lot of fun. Why should summer get all the good books? We always love to hear what other people are reading, too. 🙂

You have given an excellent history of the camera obscura. As far as that device by Hook, I'm hoping there was a stand and a way to ventilate it. I'm noting that the person is drawing on the back of the paper- so the paper must have been somewhat transparent...

Big yikes. Why is it always people that stand to benefit from it that are pushing agendas like these? The obvious bias seems like the first thing you'd recognize when you sit down to start brainstorming ideas.. I can't tell if it's a complete lack of self-awareness or if it's literally just activism dressed up as pedagogy. I'm not sure which would be more concerning

As a game designer, this is relevant. Everything is political, i havent heard it yet, and i hated the title already. But i am an hetero cis male. I will have to look into it later, i may even end up agreeing with her.

These people are such fragile narcissists that they need the rest of the world to constantly reaffirm their ego-centric delusions. The speaker looks exactly like a pudgy guy (because he is), but I'm supposed to pretend otherwise.

I generally agree with your general thesis that game mechanics are political. In particular, I wanted to add some nuance into the discussion that the ruleset and published mechanics of Dungeons and Dragons better facilities violent solutions through easily transferable personal power. Firstly, the ruleset published provides a base system, which is frequently modified at individual tables in a process of improvisation and negotiation between player and game master, which makes the game adaptable to tell stories that aren't supported by the base system. To be fair to your argument, as many TTRPG players have realized, it's often easier to find an alternative ruleset that offers explicit mechanica to support those types of narratives. Second, within the Player's Handbook, the game does contemplate localized political power through the use of Backgrounds and affiliated Background Features. Several Background are tied to social class like Nobles, Peasant Heroes, Urchins, Acolytes and Criminals. Customized backgrounds can also allow players to better modify their characters, which once again requires more work by the players at the table. Lastly, within the less read Dungeon Master's Guide and some of the published modules, you can find the rule mechanics for Factions and Renown. This directly translates into political influence, which is not portable. Factions and Renown are admitted not frequently implemented due to the increased overhead on the game master, but it demonstrates the designers contemplated and presented a simple framework for abstract political mechanics. Consequently, based on my own personal experience, especially in the context of small, localized TTRPG communities, with DnD taking the lionshare of games, such as Discord-based play-by-post living world / westmarch servers, you will find a disproportionately high population of neurodiverse individuals who have TTRPGs as their special interest. Similarly, there are also high concentrations of self-identifying queer individuals in these communities. This likely has to do with the documented association between autisim and queerness. In conclusion, I submit that Dungeons and Dragons is uniquely situated at the intersection of popularity and queer-friendly. With a little bit of work, you can play a game where power is a relational agreement between the ruled and ruler.

All interesting points! I am worried about the current reactionary blowback in the DnD community, though. A lot modifications to assuage criticism of WotC's copyright settings/worlds are the subject of reactionary ire. While it's very true that these modifications are made in the name of bureaucratic self-preservation, the conversations and scrutiny of the extremely racist and problematically inspired older settings is important.
