Another `cracking report` sad to hear GCM does not seem to improve, but one always has some sort of a cross to bear. Chatham a location I once visited in 1973, sadly at that time the Historic Dock yard was yet to come. I was visiting The Isle of Grain aboard the SS Britsh Lancer of 50,000 tons, Take care.

Good video and good value for the baseboard kit considering it's a bespoke size. I suppose a hot glue gun with woodglue sticks could help hold he first part in place while the wood glue dries if someone is impatient! Never built one of these kits as I always build my own base boards but I'd recommend them though to anyone without the space or skills to build their own. My current layout in a suitcase is mostly foam sheet, some of which came from a skip, a few pieces of recycled ply slats from an old bed and card. Light and green!

Just a thought on your costs: if you have spent £5 to buy something but only used half of it you have actually spent £5 not £2.50 - so, unless you could have bought half the amount, I think you should add £5 to your total. If you used something from your own store cupboard, it cost you nothing... but something should probably be added to your total costs to indicate the total budget to date. I speak as someone who is increasing his store cupboard costs!
@modelrailwayquest2 күн бұрын
That’s a really valid point - but I will be using the bottle of glue in later sections of the layout and will break down the actual cost of glue used per section. That way it will be very clear how much I am spending.

Why has every layout got to be on a baseboard? Mines on a carpet in thhe front bedroom. I've had 3 years trouble free running and its easier to alter the track, you dont have to rip the old track up etc. Nicely presented though.

Very good video - well presented and informative. Video was also missing 'the other voice' which had put me off watching your videos - much better with just you!. Interestingly there is another youtube video put out yesterday that is building a layout for 'under £500'. They started by saying 'here are the baseboards' without giving any cost and its on trestles that they already had - very vague. Yours on the other hand is precise on costs something that newer builders need to know. Will enjoy watching the series.

Dudemaster here! Another good video Dawn. I think for your next cinematic themed model railway you should do 'The Great St Trinians Train Robbery' All the stock is available RTR. 3H unit, Wickham Trolley and the J94. There may have been an industrial as well as they had two steam locos. The Great St Trinians Train Robbery starring Dawn Quest as Amanda Spottiswoode (Headmistress) and Grumpy Cameraman as Flash Harry. There might even be a part for GoProGav. He could be the janitor who had a very dodgy camera set up in the film.

@modelrailwayquest3 күн бұрын
You can buy legs with the baseboards but these are optional. Here in the UK often layouts are not self-supporting. Organisers of model railway shows provide tables. So this layout will require two tables.

Great info. One item to new modelers is if you can't orient your module vertically, make sure the width is less than a door frame. That said, if finances are tight, a hallway, hollow core door can be used with 1" frame attached below.

My Grandson had been gifted some z-scale by a friend in Germany. So, while I am happier with OO--scale, mainly due to eyesight (so I will have to rely on my Grandson's younger eyes). Horny's Basset Lowke though attracted me back originally - it's sitting in storage whilst we build the suitcase model.

Hi! If you like building layouts based on films, I have 2 US films you might consider if you want a change of pace.1: "Ticket to Tomahawk"...western about building a narrow-gauge railroad thru the Rocky Mountains, and its trials and tribulations, and is available on KZfaq I think. Second: The General by Buster Keaton, based on the US civil war event known as "the great locomotive chase" and is also on KZfaq.
@3ftsteamrwy123 күн бұрын
PS: Best way to handle sidewalk-superintendants nit-picking about how it SHOULD have neen done, is the sign by my model railroad room door "My railroad, My rules, enjoy!"
@modelrailwayquest2 күн бұрын
Thank you - they would make fantastic layouts. Are the early railroad days popular as model railroad layouts in the US?
@modelrailwayquest2 күн бұрын
Agreed! :-)
@3ftsteamrwy12Күн бұрын
Its sort of a mixed bag...really eary (civil war/pre civil war) is not as widely modeled, as the time priod progresses, the level of modelling does. I think part of it is compared to when I was a child (1960's) interest in "western" themed things had decreased . Also , younger modellers today look at ANY steam as being very historic. Im the US for some reason the "transiotion" period (WW2 to roughly 1960) has always been the biggest era modeled. Narrow gauge and trolley/interurban modelers tend to set their modelling in their glory eras.

Sound! Much better! (Watched the first upload using CC - worked pretty well.) It's pretty clear that for small, or modular, layouts, the laser-cut base is a fantastic option. Not sure how the economics would work as you scale up to 1220 mm x 2440 mm (which is the size of a standard sheet of plywood in the US.)
