That's a great idea for certain situations! But things like gripping or pushing can be painful for someone with serious RSI. That's why they use their other body parts. People don't usually realize how difficult seemingly simple activities can be until they get injured.

While the ergonomics isn't ideal, my experience tells me having a vehicle that allows you to travel around in the city is so important for your mental health when you have RSI. Using the steering wheel is stressful too. I think "everything in moderation" is the key. I would only use a vehicle like this for commuting, not any type of athletic activity.

Hello Stan, I understand a lot of people use motorcycles because of heavy traffic in their area, but a lot of throttling in stop and go traffic can be hard on your wrists. It's the design of the handlebar that leads to the problem. That said, plenty of people with RSI have problems turning steering wheels for a whole different reason (DeQuervain's disease). But I certainly agree that moderation is key!

@@DeborahQuilter Yes if I was a citizen in NYC, I would consider a motorcycle or a scooter too. The metro system doesn't always lead you directly to your destination. Walking too much isn't healthy either. BTW, I saw the store also sells scooters. Have you tried those yet? The handlebar looks similar but the posture will be much better.

If you develop a RSI finger tremor from playing piano, and stop playing piano, can it actually go away? And how long might the tremor take to subside? Where does the nerve entrapment occur? Can RSI present as JUST tremor and no other symptoms (pain, nerve buzziness and/or heat sensation, etc)?
@DeborahQuilter
@DeborahQuilter 24 күн бұрын
Hello, Lying with Statistics, you need to speak to your doctor about why this is happening. But RSI can present very differently for people: some people don't have any pain, for instance. And while you said you got RSI from playing the piano, remember that that's not the only thing you do with your hands. Perhaps you use the computer? Or perform other repetitive activities on a daily basis? All of these can contribute to cumulative trauma disorder. Best wishes to you.

Yes, you can say lazy. But unfortunately when you have RSI, this might be the only option you have to get to the cashier without further straining your hands. @DeborahQuilter
@DeborahQuilter 20 күн бұрын
If you had RSI, you, too, might be using this technique at the grocery store. It's a great adaptation for people with Repetitive Strain Injury because it helps them avoid straining their hands. And it's not really that unhygienic - most foods are packaged or put in a plastic bag, which could prevent contamination. The grocery basket is not in direct contact with the floor. And shoppers aren't touching the food directly with their feet. People also wash fruits and vegetables before they cook them. So, perhaps you can find some compassion for people who are doing the best they can to live with RSI in a way that doesn't make it worse for them..

That this excellent technique is pointedly "out of style" and even discouraged/chuckled at for years now, and that there is no product designed for this purpose (ie, a book-like object, weight variables, anti-slip attachments lol), tells me it's HIDDEN TEC at least over here. In other parts of the world they go for it with clay pots, water, specifically for gait and posture.
@DeborahQuilter
@DeborahQuilter Ай бұрын
It may be out of style, and books may be diminishing, but it's a terrific way to train good posture. In countries where people carry loads, I suspect people intuitively figured out the best place to put things on their head, so they are not straining their shoulders, arms and hands. When I was in India, I saw women carrying heavy loads of bricks on their head with beautiful posture. It's a pity in the West that we can't do the same thing. But I would like to add that you DON'T want a nonslip device for this purpose. The reason why it works is because you have to use your balance to keep the load in place. Otherwise, you defeat the purpose.
@yvonnemariane2265
@yvonnemariane2265 Ай бұрын
@@DeborahQuilter But I'm saying it didn't just sadly go out of style, it's a hidden tec, discouraged, no sense in getting freedom-loving Americans all good-postured right? :) As for a product for this purpose, it would be safer and more realistic than a book which are just a tad too slippery for a beginner and the slippery-ness of it and weight could be adjusted! You have a special role in this tec now as I had to dig online to find someone talking about this and am so glad to find your channel. I don't have an RSI but issues and am always seeking to optimize body/mind function
@DeborahQuilter
@DeborahQuilter Ай бұрын
I see what you're getting at. Good posture guarantees a happy life in many ways and it's a pity more people don't know this. Regarding products for this purpose, that's why I recommended a yoga block. It would be less painful if it fell on your foot. You can graduate from a foam block to a woodblock for a little more weight. If you use an anti-traction device you could place a great deal of strain on your neck if it weren't placed in the proper place. Your proprioception will tell you what that is by keeping the block on your head. You can practice walking while turning your head from right to left, you can also practice getting up and out of the chair with the block on. Fun!
