I just did a post on this very topic earlier today; when all is said and done, the actual value of a book is what someone is willing to pay for it regardless of what its marketed "value" is.
@PatricksRareBooks
@PatricksRareBooks Күн бұрын
I’ve remarked on that as well, and have a counterpoint. Can we not also say it’s worth what someone is willing to sell it for? Keeping that book meant more to that seller than lowering the price. So it was worth $450-to that person.

@@PatricksRareBooks I had no considered that angle, but that is a valid point. On another note, I wish to thank you for your instruction on how to properly store books on a shelf; yours is the only channel I have come across that provides such detailed, valuable information on how to properly store and treat books to prevent damage.

First off, your hair is beautiful. Second, do you have a list of the books on your shelves? Not the really antiquated books but those i can maybe buy off Amazon? I stumbled on your bowing bookshelf video and i saw the Dictionary books behind you and bought three from Amazon. I went to your site to see if you had a list of your collection but it seems you only list what you are selling

Better still, just stagger the fronts of the books. After all, some books are the exact same size, and lining up the backs will cause the same problem.

Another option, for those of us who can't spend thousands for a solid wood bookcase, but who can afford to spend a little more to make chipboard bookcases stronger, is to buy solid lumber to be your shelves. A lot of the cheap bookcases have shelves just slotted in, so you can simply replace these with pieces of lumber cut to the right length, and they will work much better than chipboard shelves. A 6ft piece of pine costs only about $20 at a DIY store (poplar or oak are stronger, but are much more expensive), and all that needs to be done is cutting it to size (this can be done at the store), then painting or staining the wood, and varnishing it.

What's incredible is my granddaughter has a genetic disorder called Biotinodase deficiency and they've only been knowledgeable about and treating it for maybe 30 yrs. I adopted her as a baby....its found on the PKU blood test at birth. I am a Registered Nurse and l actually drew her blood, because l was a Newborn baby nurse and did it everyday. When her parents took her to the health department, they had no clue how to do it so her parents called me and the health department said l could draw it, but only if l taught all the Nurses there how to do it. Took me about 30 seconds, their technique was horrific. . But anyway when l started taking her to see her geneticist, l asked him what happened to all the babies, children 20 years ago, or so, who didnt get their Biotin in its pure form unbound to a protein molecule? He said "They all became mentally retarded because we didnt test for it then, and by the time we figured it out at 1-2 yrs old...it was too late...the damage was irreversible." My heart almost stopped. Shes 20 now. What a miracle of God...that this beautiful girl was spared what soo many suffered because we hadnt caught up on technology yet. You are spot on ..they would of given anything to know what we know now. Good to see you actually reading the books you collect and resell. God Bless you Brother. 📖✝️👑

Well said, Patrick! Incredibly, people forget the challenges and struggles throughout the centuries that led to modern medicine. Nobody remembers any more millions of children paralyzed by Polio or millions of people who died from the Spanish flu or many other diseases that are now treatable with modern medicine. Ignorance is our society's worst enemy. That is why the history of medicine is extremely important and should be taught in schools, too. This is how we can decrease medical illiteracy in our country so people can make better health decisions.

You shouldn’t shelve large thick books standing upright (unless you have inserts), as the mass of the pages will cause the pages to sag and pull at the binding at the top

I have the companion bible, moffatt bible, interlinear bible, great bible, tyndale bible, ethiopian coptic bible and the dead sea scrolls bibe and have read them all, comparing scripture side by side. I recomment the companion bible and moffatt bible along with a concordance if you want to know what God is actually saying. If you limit yourself to one bible then you are hurting yourself.

So? The people of England craved a bible that the 'weakest of women and the plowboy could recite.' They desired accuracy. The church of England scholars and the puritan scholars ask the King for such a bible. They used manuscripts and other bibles. They used 53 scholars over a 7 year period. 49 were able to complete it. They split ino three groups all the info. The part that was sent to one group was sent to each scholar in the group. Each translated, then came together to discuss it. When they were done each sent their part to the next group, and later to the next group. God foreknew that England would become the nation where the sun never set. AND thus the international language of trade. The Roman Catholic Hierarchy despised it. Many people left the church/state. Later, they tried to change God's word which God forbid. Revelation 22:18-19. An example of the heresy of it is this; They Comfort the Wicked. Jesus spoke of ETERNAL hell more than any one else. According to American Dictionary of the English Language Noah Webster 1828, the King James Bible has the word hell in it 54 times, 32 in Old and 22 in the New Testaments. NKJB has 19 in OT and 13 in NT. Modern bibles do not have the word hell in the Old Testament, around 12 times in the NT, but none in Acts, 2:27, 31, and zero in Revelation. There is no statement saying death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. Their disobedient act of adding to or taking from God's word which is forbidden by God in Revelation 22:18-19, has inspired some to say that there is Annialism, meaning the soul ceases to exist, hell is not eternal. They give hope to the wicked.

You know what the best thing about a book is besides the contents? The smell. I love how a new book smells but older books and manuscripts have an almost nutty and musty scent that permeates the mind with the captured memories of history!
