Excellent demonstration. I wanted to add a shawl collar to a patten that just has a button band the same width all the way around. Your demo is perfect for my needs and I can see it will be really easy to do. Thank you so much. Also, I really love this chunky sweater. I live in Florida and it's usually not cold enough for something like that, but I am thinking about making it anyway, even if I only wear it a handful of times per year that is a beautiful sweater and the pattern is very reasonably priced.

May I ask You why You turn the new knit stitch before you put it on the left needle and when you do the purl stitch you don,t turn the new stitch?
@fionamorrisdesigns1798

This cast on is a variation of the Cable Cast on which is usually worked as a knit cast on. In the Cable Cast on the stitch is turned as it is placed on the left needle so it is orientated correctly (for Western open knitting style) on the left needle when working the first row. If working the Cable Cast on with a purl stitch, the way the stitch is formed will have the correct orientation without turning when placed on the left needle. I used to work this cast on without turning the knit stitch but as it didn't seem to make any difference if I turned the stitch, and this is the method I am more used to working when working cable cast on, I know work the cast on as demonstrated. I hope this explanation helps.

thank you, I am delighted to learn to knit with you, you are so good at showing and explaining. Can I knit this shawl with two needles? Hope so.
@fionamorrisdesigns1798
@fionamorrisdesigns1798 5 ай бұрын
You can start the shawl on two needles but it will be difficult to work the whole shawl on two needles as the next stage requires picking up stitches along two sides of the triangle. There are a lot of stitches and the knitting has to turn a corner at the point which will not be very easy on straight needles. All the knitting is back and forth but having a flexible needle will make it easier to knit the shawl. Hope that helps.

Hi Alice, here are the instructions for the Picot Cast-on written down. Hope this helps. Make a slip-loop and place this on the LH needle. Using the Knit cast-on, cast on 5sts, *cast off 2sts, slip stitch back to LH needle, cast on 4 more stitches; repeat from * for required number of stitches. Each repeat creates 2 new stitches so when you have cast on nearly all the stitches you may have to cast on 1 or 2 more stitches to get the correct stitch count. The stitches are in pairs with a small gap between each pair. If I were to go into a k2, p2 rib after this cast on I would work k1, *p2, k2: repeat to last 3sts, p2, k1. The gap between pairs of stitches will come at the centre of each pair.

Hello. Thank you for this video. Is there a reason some people twist it when transferring (both when casting on and after binding off but before starting the next repeat) and some don’t? What’s the impact on the finished item?

@fionamorrisdesigns1798

Hi Eli, When casting on stitches with 2 needles as used in this picot cast-on the reason for twisting on the stitch if to do with the way the stitch sits on the left needle when you come to it in the next row. If the stitch is twisted on when placing it on the needle it will be mounted with the right hand leg of the stitch being at the front of the needle, which is the normal way for a stitch to be mounted in 'Western uncrossed knitting'. If the stitch is not twisted on when being placed on the left hand needle the right hand leg of the stitch sits at the back of the needle so you either have to knit through the back loop for a normal open stitch or if you knit through the front loop i.e. the left leg you will work a twisted stitch. Hope that explains things OK.
