Having visited this 7/11 while visiting a friend at CNU, I too noticed this hyper awkward fence.

Amazing video! I don’t know how I didn’t discover this channel until now! I agree with so much of what you’re saying, and I definitely would love to see downtown NN revitalized! Looking at old postcard images from downtown is really shocking; it looks nothing like it does today! As much as I’d love those shipyard parking lots to use the land they occupy more effectively, I doubt the ones from 36th up to 48th could be completely removed. I think there are some strategic defensive reasons they exist, perhaps for storing and prepping material for the shipyard in case of a potential war. Having the CSX Peninsula Subdivision right there makes this even easier. Haven’t confirmed this with any official sources though, it’s just a theory I’ve heard from a couple different people! In terms of transit for Newport News, improvement is definitely needed! BRT is great, but I really think Newport News could benefit in the long-term from some sort of higher-capacity rail transit running up and down the peninsula. Of course, I wouldn’t say no to BRT in the meantime, but it’s almost too convenient that we have an intact rail right of way that covers pretty much the entire space between Warwick and Jefferson. Hampton Roads Transit looks to Richmond for inspiration, but I really think it should think big and try to emulate, on a smaller scale, success that’s been had in NYC (cross-James ferries, anyone?). You’re saying a lot of stuff that needs to be said! Again, amazing video!
@tyleralberico9340Күн бұрын
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! Honestly, I would much rather prefer rail in the peninsula. I just brushed past it because Hampton Roads doesn’t like it as much as I do.

@@tyleralberico9340 If only the planned Tide route to VA Beach was actually built! (It still could be for relatively cheap, but there’s no political will.) Then Hampton Roads would have a better sense of the benefits of rail transit. They’re considering building a new light rail line southside between Norfolk and Chesapeake (but I’m worried they’re waaaaay too excited about the BRT alternative for their own good; I hope HRT doesn’t have tunnel vision… unless it’s to tunnel a rail line under the James!)
@tyleralberico9340Күн бұрын
@@29downtheline The more I learned about the circumstances behind the Tide extension the more I was baffled at the result. I mean, it was practically paid for! I get why people like BRT, and for the sake of argument in this video I was all for it, but as someone who grew up riding the Metro but now rides the Pulse to work every day… buses just can't get to that level of quality. I appreciate that something like a BRT line in Chesapeake will absolutely improve the experience for those who already ride the bus, but (and this is really more of a gut feeling than anything) I feel like even the best bus won't move the needle in reducing vehicle miles traveled like light or heavy rail would. It's just not the same experience. I didn’t have any idea they were considering light rail, though! I just really hope the Tide’s result didn’t sour the region’s opinion of light rail for the foreseeable future. Don't get me started on a rail link across the river! There were a few months where I occasionally had to commute to VB for an internship and I chose to drive because it would have taken something like 2 hours and three transfers to get there.
@29downthelineКүн бұрын
@@tyleralberico9340 I mean considering they wanna connect to the light rail, I can’t see a better way to do that than by a branch off the light rail with no transfers necessary!

Love the shout-out for the Pulse! Such a good resource for RVA and I just took it last night. But you're correct once you get into Shockoe Bottom, it's far from BRT but overall, it's a gem. Also love the Sade poster!

Awesome video! Just curious: What's your opinion of the City Center at Oyster Point? I always enjoyed and admired that area while I lived in the Hampton Roads area. It's like a newer downtown outside of the original downtown.
@tyleralberico9340Ай бұрын
I’m glad you like it! In a vacuum, I think it’s nice, but I wish there were less vacant spaces. But it’s really more of a testament to how anti-downtown politicians were in Newport News that they’d rather build a completely new area than spend those resources on what they already had.
@benpholmesАй бұрын
@@tyleralberico9340 LOL. I see what you mean--as in: Why didn't they just place such a development in or near the original downtown? But, yep, I do think that Oyster Point is a step in the right direction.

The Hampton Roads region is just sad visually. Zoning for 1,000 sq ft SFH? 7 year tax abatement for owner occupied two family homes? The Pulse bus run has been a success in RVA. They are expanding to a second route. Plus, the buses are free. You have your work cut out for you. Good luck.
