1. Stainless steel only! Tatonka or gsi cup, pathfinder as well, with folding handle, good capacity and You can fit nalgene or cantene bottle in it, save space. There is so many on vid, nothing good.... Cup on belt with backpack on You... Not really. If you really have to atache it to molle or shockcord.

ThanX for the comment. There are a lot of choices out there and you are right some of it is junk. I only have a backpack on when I am hiking. Furthermore, for me frugality is important. I just saw a brass cup like the one I bought for a buck or a buck and a half in eBay for $100 dollars. Several of the cups I have here have also sold for over $150. I mostly get mine at a second hand store or what we call a "goodwill" store. I would also say I am not into name brands, "Pathfinder" "GSI" "REI" "Tatonka" Those are for the people who have money burning a hole in their pocket. I would also agree that a cup that can boil water is also a better choice. Take care and enjoy your time in the woods.

ThanX for the good comment. Now this may seem funny or even lazy on my part but in my view the best way to advance ones outdoor "bushcraft" skills is time in the woods. By that I mean learn by doing, good skills are seasoned with experience and many mistakes. The only other point I would make here is try to be thoughtful, take time to think it through, what will you need and how will you take it. Finally, my point is slow down to learn fast. Listen when their is an opportunity and don't be afraid to disagree. Good luck and have fun!!

Yes, I have bought several knifes during trips to far away places. When I return home I pack them in my luggage and don't take them out until I return home. I have never had a problem but then I don't take them in carry one or go by public bus terminal.

I usually have a big grin on my face watching guys in $150 pants chopping away with $200 axes and $300 (or more) knives. More than likely from sponsors.... I buy Mora blades and handle them myself. Huge satisfaction for me for under $25 in most cases.

Well done sir! I couldn't agree more with you on the subject of batoning in particular. Having a knife that you can baton wood with in an actual emergency is great (have fun spending your whole day trying to process enough wood to get you through the ice cold night), but if you know that you're going to be processing wood, carry an axe, hatchet, or hawk. Heck carry a good bow saw too! As for knives, you hit the nail right on the head. Too many people out there focusing on ridiculous things like, "it has to be full tang, it has to be carbon steel, if it's carbon steel, it must be this kind of high carbon steel, it has to have a 90 degree spine, it has to have this scandi grind, it has to be one of these manufacturers!" It's all BS. I'm not saying there are not some horrible cheaply made knives you should avoid "gas station specials", but seriously, there is no "forged by the gods knife!' Use what you have, can afford, and know how to use it. Don't get me wrong, if you can afford a super overpriced knife that holds up well, fine, go for it! Just do not be discouraged if you can't. Keep in mind people like Mors Kochanski pretty much did everything with an Opinel folding knife and a bucksaw. Our ancestors pulled it off with stone tools, so no matter what piece of steel you decide to carry, know that you're ahead of the game!

ThanX!! I did wonder what people would think of that titanium cup comment. What I find is they market all kinds of things like the titanium cups which are simply designed to get the $$ money out of your pocket into to their's. Simple living and "frugal bushcraft" suggests not wasting money on all the "sexy" camp stuff. Would you believe I checked last night and on ebay they have titanium Sierra cups for over $50 dollars!!! As I suggested most of my cups come from second hand stores and cost well under five bucks. Thank you for the comment. Lets use our resources $$ to get out into the woods rather than glitzy camp stuff we end up not using.

Yes, the trees get bigger every year just as long as we don't have a fire. As for the cabin, I smile. I did have a small leak in the roof but it stopped last melt and has been find ever since. There is no way I could have known how well the REEFER CONTAINER CABIN would have worked. I am comfortable, always stay warm and sleep well. I have now been using it for over ten years and the total cost was right at five thousand dollars, bought, set up and organized. That is simple living and frugal bushcraft at its best. The main reason I set up this channel was to share this approach to living in the woods off the grid with others. Its is an idea worth sharing. Thank you for your comment.

Personally i like the gi cup. I carry it, the little stove and the canteen all in the canteen carrier. But i also carry a small cook kit , the pot i use is a stainless steel grease can with lid i picked up at the doller store. I like it because it has a strainer and a little bit of a pour spout. It is very multi functional.

Yes! yes this is a good system. I haven't used it but it seems like a good frugal approach. I use a small "Hobo Stove" with my cups. In this video I didn't really speak to the stove issue. You wise to point out this whole system as an example. With the large cup I showed I can put a fuel canister and small propane stove inside the cup. That works great for day trips with a need for coffee or tea. However, I particularly like using a "Hobo Stove." They are simple and easy to make. I have a great video on my oldest Hobo Stove which illustrates my thinking there.

Thank you for the comment. The brass Sierra cup is out there waiting for you in a second hand store someplace. I did indeed get mine for one dollar. However it didn't look the way it does now in the video. I had to take it home and clean it up. 0000 steel wool worked very well. What's interesting to me is the aluminum Sierra cup I showed is likely the least common. There again I found it in a second hand store for no more than two bucks. Good luck with your treasure hunt and find time to get into the woods.

Good to see you here, I always like your thoughtful comments. Fire is a real problem, the one concern most locals have. As you can see there is a good deal of combustible material in the woods. Thank you for the comment. I have looked at the Watchmen Stove. It looks very good. I even wrote them a letter and asked to review it on this channel and they didn't even bother to reply. It was a real disappointment. It does look like a good stove, the price point is kind of high and I am not sure how much of an improvement it actually is however it does look like it build on the Deadwood Stove concept. The real put down with Watchman Stove was not the stove but the lack of honest friendly communication. I guess they were to busy to bother. Thank you for your comment and links, I am happy to have them here.

So refreshing. Power to you. I think bushcraft is a hobby for most people who have the internet. Like golf, fishing, photography etc. People enjoy spending some of their hard earned money on high end gear for their hobby. Most pro photographers I know would love the affluent hobbyists' gear... It's just the way it is. Thoreau had the same view as you. It makes no sense to work for a week to afford a knife that has no advantage over the one you already own. I learnt to live in the woods with a charcoal maker, decades ago. It isn't complicated. All that being said, a knife is a primal tool, and the latest iterations of it are interesting to me - I particularly like folders! I have just blown a load of cash on an Enzo Trapper in Elmax. It's a traditional knife made from a fairly modern powdered steel. I teach bushcraft to kids, and fancied treating myself to a step up from a Mora.. My feeling is that I have been a fool, and I might live to regret it. But I will enjoy learning to sharpen the new knife, and love the fact that I don't have to clean it immediately or sharpen it every other day. I have all but given up on conservation, but that is where I want my educating to lead. The woods that covered Europe were all managed before we discovered oil, and one day they may be again. My feeling is that the old ways need to be kept alive, and the frugality that you espouse is one of the most important of all the many elements involved. As the Indian said, 'The white man keeps warm by running around collecting firewood for his huge fire, but the red man sits by a small fire and keeps warm that way', or something..
@okanoganforest
@okanoganforest 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your wonderful comments. It is so good that you are teaching and "passing it on." I also teach Hunter Education in the State of Washington for the same reason. It really isn't so much about hunting as it is about conservation and sharing a love of the woods. Safety is also a big part of what we do. I have three new videos out and one of them, "The Best Bushcraft Cup Ever Made" also talks about being frugal. Bushcraft without frugality is just consumerism in the outdoors. ThanX again for your thoughtful comment. I value it greatly. Be safe.

Ivy, Sorry for the slow reply. Hope you are making progress. There are no snakes to speak of so I wouldn't worry there. The bugs are far worse than snakes. Keep an eye on the tick issue. Where I am wish is less than 50 miles from you there are big bears, cougar and wolves. They have never been a problem however I would have a good and easy to use 12 gage shotgun and learn to use it with double 0 buck shot. Honestly, I am always far more concerned about bad humans over bad animals. The shotgun will work wonderfully in protecting you from both.
