It's strange that the band called this an anti-war song because the lyrics read like the opposite.
@BC1000Stars
@BC1000Stars 2 күн бұрын
@@owenmcgee8496 well, on one side, the lyrics are the propaganda the soldiers were being fed and on the other side, the soldier's thoughts. Stuart always said it was how young men were forced to go and fight wars started by old men.

That being said, there was more than one music journalist/reviewer at the time that missed the point of the song. I think this is where having it followed by Come Back to Me was vital to the story.

@@BC1000Stars The two songs were distinct, though, and not always played together. "Come Back to Me" has the same subject as "Chance": imagining the melancholy of a single mother. "Where the rose is sown" is all martial. Even it wasn't intended, "into the valley", "melancholy soldiers", "lost patrol", "where the rose is sown", can all sound like gung-ho anthems. "Restless natives" & "Red fox" could fit in the same category were it not that they depict rebels rather than soldiers. "Flame of the west" could be read as an anti-war song but it is also as aggressive and strident as can be. The narrator of the song is under the same spell.

I'm so happy I found this version, although I feel like it took me much too long to find it! This is definitely one of the best songs off of the title track's album, and although I respect Stuart's preference later on to play this song acoustic/solo, I absolutely LOOOOOOOOOVE the full band version. The drums and bass on this are just...SO PERFECT for this song and reinforce its message so much better than when it was just played acoustic/solo. (Besides...isn't "peace in 'our' time" more apt when played by a band, or at least by more than one person? Not to be so literal, but...well, it's just a thought. LOL) Anyway, it made me so happy to find this. Although I know it's been up for a while now, thank you so much for uploading and sharing it!

I’m curious if someone has a video recording of their 1984 Tokyo performance. Because I only heard the audio and was blown away.

@@luisanthony1385 I’ve never heard of any video existing of their Japan tour in 1984, and I have looked into it many times over the decades. Wish there was something.

Wow! Finding this gem has just brought a tear to a 55yr olds eye at 1am in the morning. My first ever gig. Not only did it enhance my love for Stuart and the band as a teenager, it also brought The Big Dish into my life. Two awesome Scottish bands. The world has been a duller place without you Mr Adamson 😢❤

I just now discovered this, and am I the only one who thinks the first version/the demo is better than the second version? :o And the second version is the one recorded by the band? I just...I can't help but think that Bruce is far more a genius songwriter (musically) than anyone has ever properly given him credit for. GAH. Needless to say, I LOVE this. Thank you so much for sharing, and it's especially neat to hear both versions!

@@lyrical7747 I labeled these the way Bruce has where they originally appeared but the demo does have a finished quality to it. After looking into it further, I actually think both may feature all members of the band. These were recorded at REL Studios in November of 1986. A great instrumental either way!

I agree with this comment so much! It was dusted off for this leg of the tour only and they took it to another level. Stuart used a really clean setting for his lead lines in this version, the only time he ever did and it sounds immaculate.
