Hi, I am a retired teacher now doing some one on one tutoring. I understand the importance of NWF. My struggle is with a rising 4th grader who can read at an early third grade level in context of a story or sentence. However, when I assess with NW she can't figure out a basic cvc word (heb). I have been working on a very structured program with her and she does well with all the lessons (UFLI), but when she does the NW in isolation she doesn't make the connection. Do you have any recommendations for an older reader and how to help her make that connection?

Totally agree! While receiving Tier 3 support may be an indicator that a student may be eligible for an IEP, there are a number of factors that could come into play here. Waiting to provide the support a student needs until eligibility is determined is a detriment to the student.

I agree with you in principle. That said, I work in a rural, high poverty/trauma district in WV. My experience has been that when these kids ask "what does that word mean?" and you tell them "That is a nonsense word" you go right down a rabbit hole. The kiddos spend more time asking why am I using words that don't exist than they do processing the letter/sound correspondence. For them formal English is, if not a foreign language, at least an unfamiliar dialect. I try to substitute with real words whenever possible.
@readingscienceacademyАй бұрын
Instruction should happen with real words. When students know all of the letter-sound relationships and have been taught to blend letter sounds they encounter in words, they don't have any difficulty reading nonwords. You can easily expose them to this in kindergarten by teaching them to read simple 2-syllable words like picnic or catnip. If you assess with real words you can't tell if the student read it correctly because they have memorized the word or if they truly have acquired the alphabetic principle.

In my area, it seems that "we" are always looking for the quick fix and especially one that doesn't require analysis or reflection. Chromebooks/iPads are viewed as a technological panacea or at least the key that unlocks the door for the kiddos to learn on their own! Sorry to sound jaded, but I am hugely disappointed to find so many of my peers here in WV are in a "I get paid whether they learn or not" mindset. For me, there is nothing like sitting with a student to learn what they know and support them while they find out how to know more.

I'd like to give you a hint for your overloaded bookshelf. Get a half-inch diameter metal white curtain rod from a trade store, cut pieces to size, and wedge them in every shelf's middle (side to side and front to back). The weight right now is on perhaps half an inch of a few tiny wood screws in the vertical sides. Even a white water pipe will do the job. While you wedge the pipe, take 10 books from the centre of the shelf. Of course, start at the bottom shelf. Alternatively, you can practice some cuss words as you will need them. 😉 Speaking from experience.😭😭

Hi Stephanie, I would love more information about STARS, I direct ASDEC, an IMSLEC Accredited training center that prepares educators at the practitioner and therapy levels. We have trained over 220 public school educators in Frederick County, MD who have completed the full nine-month certification process, Each year we are training cohorts of 20-30 teachers at the therapy level. We are eager to partner with pre-service educators at the community college and 4-year college levels in our area so that we can build their capacity for pre-service SOR training. Holly Lane from the University of FLLiteracy Institute is correct in stating that the lack of uniformly high-quality literacy instruction is due to "the prevalence of ill-qualified adjunct professors", which she sees as a serious and pervasive problem in colleges of education. We want to be part of the solution. Would love to connect with you.

If I have MOY 1st graders that are yellow in cls, red in wwr, and red-red in orf - my brain says I intervene at the decoding/ blending level , but I’m in Ohio with “Dyslexia” law, is my pm in just nwf or in nwf and orf for rcs
@stephaniestollar35875 ай бұрын
Intervene on letter-sounds and blending letter-sounds to read real CVC words. Teach the letter-sounds in an order that allows kids to read and spell words from the beginning. Teach blending along the way, not after the student knows all the letter sounds. Dyslexia law has no impact on this at all. PM with NWF with goals for CLS and WWR. No reason to PM ORF because it is too hard for these students. I would check their PSF scores. If they haven't met that goal, that might be the better PM measure initially, but instruction wouldn't be different from what I described aabove. Goof for you for digging into this!

What are your favorite texts for read-alouds? How do you choose them?
@KA-hc3kv6 ай бұрын
It sounds like you might be saying lesson plans but you mean curriculum? Writing lesson plans to me means laying out a plan for the week, and I write those plans weekly. I often tweak my plans along the way as necessary. In my humble opinion, teachers in primary grades should be provided research based curriculum to follow especially in phonics and math. I taught in a school for 10 years that expected teachers to write their own curriculum across the board K-8. It was not a wise approach for reading and math as there were tremendous holes in learning. Teachers resorted to purchasing this and that off TPT just to survive. No teacher from one grade to the next was on the same page, and the students didn’t show appropriate growth. They finally at least phonics curriculum K-2.

I like your explanation. Thank you! Can you help me understand why they don’t do ORF at the BOY, so we can compare it to MOY?
@readingscienceacademy6 ай бұрын
I assume you mean at BOY 1st grade since it is used for screening at the beginning of every other grade. At the beginning of first, students are still building the word-level reading skills to read text accurately, fluently and for meaning. Reading text is generally very difficult for students at that point in the year which means you get a lot of scores bunched down at the low end of the range, resulting in lots of students who look like they are at risk and making ORF not a very sensitive screener at that point in time.
@comeon0006 ай бұрын
I agree with the ethic in theory, but have also seen districts that invest in cheaper curriculums and insist on all teachers following the same lesson plan, but there are a pod of teachers that have taken science of reading trainings and are now limited against providing instruction that would be more optimal for the children and for their own work load. I would instead say it is the district's responsibility to research and provide curriculum that is of a quality that teachers desire to opt into teaching it.
