In 1964 , as a 9 years old child I lived in Famagusta , Cyprus , where my dad was working as an engineer building Famagusta harbor. Commandaria was a favorite wine among the friends of our family. Of course, regardless of my young age, I tried it then . After many many years , in 2008 , my Dad and I went to Cyprus again to visit the old places . Of course we had to try if Commandaria tasted the same as it had all these years ago and YES !! The taste was the same .It brought back so many memories ... Wonderful island , wonderfull wine .

Cyprus also produces some excellent white wines and some very drinkable brandy. Topics for a future video perhaps ?

I first tasted it while in Cyprus with the RAF in 1969. Enjoyed it regularly. Now I wonder if it has any connection with the Greek wine, Mavrodaphne.
@WineScribble
@WineScribble Жыл бұрын
The two are different. Mavrodafne is produced mainly in the Northern Peloponnese and in the island of Cephalonia. The classic sweet Mavrodafne is a fortified wine whose fermentation is interrupted by the introduction of a neutral spirit. This keeps the grape sugar still high, giving the wine a sweet taste. Although fortified Commandaria does exist, it is rare. The sweetness of Commandaria is achieved by letting the grapes dry under the sun, concentrating the sugar content. Lastly, Mavrodafne wine as we know it, was first produced in the mid 19th century, whereas Commandaria is much, much older. Both Mavrodafne and Commandaria spend a significant amount of time in oak barrels, which creates similarities in texture, colour and aromas. If you can get both at the same time, you should taste them alongside. I can’t think of many more fun ways to spend an evening. Lovely wines, both! Enjoy! ❤🍷🍷🍷❤️

@@WineScribble Thanks for the insight. I have found a local, well fairly local, supplier of Commanderia, my local supermarket stocks Mavrodaphne so I am organising a tasting with a few friends. Cheese, crackers and pickles on the side. Should make for a pleasant evening.

hello ^^ im back, so let me tell you I just opened this 2015 jumilla wine, LA Hormiga Roja and it smelled great, looked kinda cloudy but when I tasted it it was kinda fermented, like lightly bubbly and acidic, I dont think its any good, but is this a characteristic of a garnacha?
@WineScribble
@WineScribble Жыл бұрын
This is not a characteristic of Garnacha I’m afraid. Secondary fermentation is desirable if we’re talking about sparkling wine, but bubbles in what was intended to be a dry red are a wine fault. It usually occurs when the wine is bottled with a few grams of residual sugar which then re-ferments. This is more likely to happen most in low-intervention wines, where little to no sulphur dioxide is used.

In Ancient Nemea, this is where when Hercules/Heracles is fighting with a Nemean Lion. Lions are disappeared in the Balkans, but 😒🦁 well, here in Nemea in Southern Greece, they are no Wild Lions living in Southeast Europe, 😏 they're dead and gone, they're Extinct and very sad.

I have always preferred Italian overall, however both countries have so much variety it’s hard to say for sure. My favorite style is the Chianti for red, and Bordeaux blanc for white. You can find so much variety in both countries. But Italy has my favorite wine styles and grape varietals overall. But gosh I love a good earthy and rich Bordeaux red over a Chianti sometimes! Like I said, a hard choice LOL!

@WineScribble
@WineScribble Жыл бұрын
Some less tannic reds can be served at 12 degrees Celsius, but generally speaking most taste best as they warm up slightly. About 15-16 degrees is ideal for most reds out there. That would have been "room temperature" for your average Chateau, 100 years ago, before central heating was widely availabe!

Well, Greek stories are all about a hero's tragic flaws, aren't they? They all mess up. Hercules, Theseus, Odysseus, Oedipus. Even the gods keep doing it, Zeus especially keeps walking into trouble. You would think one of them, one day would learn a lesson, but no. Hehehe. This hell-belt, self-destruction has had loads of names: Hubris. Hamartia. Tragic Flaw, all of them loosely translating to: FFS My Guy What Were You Thinking? It's not a Greek myth otherwise.

@@WineScribble about the flaws I totally agree with you :) like I always say before Hollywood there was mythology, the Odyssey should really be made into a state of the art film, I think they've tried in the past but it hasn't stood the test of time
