It's amazing how much value long-time fans get out of the Battle Network collection. I'm still playing it to death a year later, and now I'm starting to wonder if I should've paid more. I know they're essentially just emulators, but my Switch is basically a P.E.T. now.

Over a year later, and I'm still obsessed with this collection. My complaints about it are basically the same as yours. The filter option being on by default, only having a few tracks from the Legacy Collection OST available to listen to, and not seeing the HD battlechip artwork during normal gameplay. At the very least, having that HD art could've been part of the "Filter ON" option, alongside the more generic dialogue text, while keeping the original pixelated text with "Filter OFF". Also, I think if you were aware of how bad the online matchmaking truly is, you would've had more than a few things to say. For example, matching up with random players is made significantly more difficult based on both of your ranks. I just tested this with someone, and it turns out that if you both have the EXACT same rank, you will match up immediately. However, if you're just ONE rank above or below the other player, you'll have to spam the search button about 10 times (more than 20 if you're unlucky). So, back when everyone had trouble finding players on Day 1, this was part of the reason, and not so much because there weren't any players. On top of that, if you are S-rank or higher, you're not allowed to match up with anyone who is A-rank or lower. You can only play private matches with them, so the whole ranking system for this collection looks nice on paper, but is actually total garbage that can easily be fixed.

I did wonder if the redrawn battle chip artwork was hinting at a new MBN game. Doesn't seem like it's happening, tho.

As an artist who was 1st inspired by this series to start drawing as a child. Seeing that there is no Chip Art Gallery especially after seeing the amount of work they put into redrawing the art….. It Hurts.

Just a fact, Capcom didn't really care that much about narrative continuity and its meaningless because both games have unique dialogues. They expect you to play both versions anyway for BN5. So don't over think much about it. Also in Team Protoman, there are as much details that is only exclusive there as much as it is in team Colonel like Cosmoman is Sharo's Nebula leader and Lan and Dr Regal acknowledging Tadashi Hikari was helping Lan and Hub.

I've never really talked about the idea (and I am sure I am not the only one who has had it) but I kind of assumed after seeing how they had boss rush and other modes in previous legacy collections that they would have made an advanced version of the basics (NCP programs, chips, maybe even game version) to where you wouldn't have to play through the story before jumping right into the multiplayer aspect. I have been taking my time playing through the last half of the series but it has been awesome having the region locked content fully available now

I just want a command mission remaster and a star force collection!

I really wish the PVP scene were more popular. I always wanted to do PVP as a kid and this is one of the few gba games that actually had a good multiplayer.

Apparently the reason why the texts are like that is because it is hard to read it in Japanese without the intentional display. I could be wrong tho, but it makes a lot of sense why Japanese games don't even think about keeping the pixel text.

the battlechip artwork wasn't actually redrawn for the collection, it's borrowed from the art made for the physical battle chips made by takara! :) I'm unable to confirm it was available previously in artbooks or something though.

I was growing up as these games were releasing. I frankly don't remember which one I started with but there was something, then Blue Moon happened. I was around 8 years old. I don't remember finishing it. I skipped BN5 but watched a friend play Colonel version. I returned to finish the franchise strong and stuck the landing with Gregar version and I remember feeling so much emotion after getting to the end of that game.

14:25 nothing grinds my gears like seeing THIS in a legacy collection of old fan favorite games! Ladies and gents, this is why groups like ESG and Sweet Baby Inc. Are becoming such a nuisance to game devs. They buy up stock in these companies just so they can put THIS "reminder" in your face no matter where you go. Capcom should do whatever they can to detach their grumpy butts from whatever they are attached to

I recently learned bn2 had a hard mode included as post game.

You reminded me I still have to finished AC6. I'm stuck at final boss of the regular playthrough so I haven't gotten into New Game+ yet. Definitely should been nominated for GotY but wasn't.

I'm surprised to hear from many youtubers that the lib missions in 5 were a bad thing, it was what made 5 special for me. But at least we all agree 4 is bad XD. My thought for newcomers: don't hesitate to use "cheats" like buster max for bn1, because running from battles is NOT an option (except for randomly drawing the escape chip)

I sincerely appreciate the shoutout, ZRG! The suprise netcode patch was a welcome addition for PVP. Big agree with the need to "trim the fat" on public matchmaking settings.

The translation issues beyond hurt this game the most. If people pvp to avoid the translation. Then they are screwed. And people got the game to see the games English script updated and fixed. Also got screwed. There is no defense for the English translation of these games. It's that bad, and 4 being the worse is just ... a legitimate franchise killer move. To me. Preservation can be kept.... by making this a setting. A setting to play on the original translation. But making a new and updated translation the default. This translation issues was a blatant suits decision. Thinking it would save money, and that people wouldn't care. When the opposite is extremely true. I have still yet to buy the game. Because I still haven't checked if there was a mod for it. Because no one is saying there is. I'm even less likely to buy this game for the next year. Let alone vol. 1 and 2 at once. A lot of bad choices still plague MMBN. To be honest. A lot of that care that is claimed to be there. Isn't being reflected as much as I think you think it is. (In my opinion.) Yes there is effort. But effort is not the same thing. I just wish corporate suits didn't meddle in this game like they did with everything else. And I get corporate meddling vibes from footage alone. (Mostly because of that pesky translation. Add pvp to that list.)

A personal tip: If you're planning to Complete one of the games, meaning collecting all the stars / icons / achievements, best to not rely on Max Buster mode. It's mainly due to the chip collecting: The busting level also determines which chip code you can get. This is critical to complete the PA memo list. To get S busting level, at least a Double Delete is mandatory. You can't do that with Max Buster, so check your chips out and see how to Double Delete your targets as efficiently as possible! Like, Protoman chips!

Common misconception about BN3. Black didn't fix Vanilla's bugs as it still had the same bugs. Both Vanilla and Black got v1.1 releases in Japan later that fixed the bugs. The only difference between Vanilla v1.1 vs. White and Black v1.1 vs. Blue is effectively the language.

Another reason why you should stick to Team Colonel is because Capcom was not thinking when they designed Team Protoman for the liberation missions. They may be stronger in battle (except for Meddy), but they did not design liberation missions around Magnetman, Napalmman or Meddy's abilities.

Played the games as a kid and beat them 100% doing the same with this one I did 6 1 and. 2 working on 3 then 4 last 5 then I’ve finished the game 100%

I don't get the hate for 1. It's a ton of fun, a great vanilla version of all the other battle network titles you're about to get into, and it's SHORT. You can finish it without 100%ing it in under 6 or so hours, easily. I think I finished it on my live stream in two sittings of 3 hours and that was with bsing with the chat, dying twice and having to redo large sections. 2 however? NOTHING TO SAY ZRG?? NOTHING AT ALL ABOUT BACKTRACKING THE ENTIRE STORYLINE? WHAT ABOUT THE ICE. THE KEYMAKER. UHGHGHasfASHEDJFKABSDFlef in short, I hate BN2 because it's worse in every way to BN1 despite having the first iteration of what would become double soul

Vivid fan of the series, played each game, and found myself agreeing with everything you said, other then Nostalgia goggles for MMBN 2 and Bass being the coolest thing ever back then. MMBN 5 gets too much flak, and Double Team was such an amazing itteration of that game! ( being able to swap Numberman for Searchman is a gift i will never forget ) Great video man!

I've got to be honest. I'd always heard that BN3 was the paragon of the series' narratives. Id never played it before the Legacy Collection, I had onky ever played 4,5, and 6. So I started with 2 and did 3. And not only do I think that 3's story is highly overrated (it has some good stuff but lacks any compelling throughline to drive the plot for the first 3/4 of the story other than vague references of WWW being back which Lan freaks about for a second and then shrugs and forgets it), but I think *2* has the best story in the series. Gospel feels like a legitimate threat that is both dangerous and always one step ahead of you. It's the darkest and has many memorable moments. The castle dungeon scenario was genuinely upsetting, for instance. 2's narrative is only let down by the villain, sadly.

I played BN1 and 2 recently on emulator as they were the only ones I hadn’t played growing up. I decided to replay them when the legacy collection came out and I can safely say that if you are to replay BN1, just use Buster Max mode. It makes getting through the game significantly more palatable. Buster Max mode can also be turned off at any point in time so I spent my time demolishing viruses in seconds and then turning off Buster Max mode to fight bosses since those are pretty much the only interesting parts of BN1 anyway. Also, if it weren’t for Buster Max mode, I would also actually consider BN4 as a good starting point. People always bring up the multiple playthroughs to shit on the game (and rightfully so), but many people tend to forget… you don’t HAVE to go for 100% when playing these games. BN4 is probably one of the easier games in terms of battles, its plot is (mostly) self contained meaning you don’t have to be familiar with the story beforehand, AND it’s the shortest when doing a single playthrough, making it a great way to get a bite sized taste in what the rest of the series can be like. But at the end of the day, I can’t help but just hope we get more Battle Network in the near future. Leg’s hope for more Battle Network!

On my very first run of 4 I got the proto soul, for what ever reason I deleted my save file, every subsequent playthrough I couldn't get it until atleast the new game+, just awful
