100 W is only 13 dB, or just over 2 S units, more than 5 W. I'll bet if you had used 5 W you would have done OK. When signals came up, they stayed up for a little while before they dropped down again (I'm not talking about the fast QSB, rather the slow QSB) and it just would have taken you a bit longer to get the desired 10 QSOs. You got some 599s, and if they were honest 599s they would have been 579s with 5 W. 579 is a fine signal report. Some (not all) of the received signals had a sort of fluttery sound, something like aurora. Hard to tell whether that was an acoustic artifact or real. Does this typically happen when there is a flare? Anyway, the really weak received signals you heard would not have been any weaker had you been transmitting QRP. David VE7EZM
@EvanK2EJT
@EvanK2EJT Күн бұрын
Yeah, that's a valid point. It certainly would have gotten the job done on QRP. As for the flutter, I'm not sure. You're right that it did kind of sound like Aurora. Normally when there's a flare, it just kills the signals pretty much entirely. I'm not sure what was going on, but it was weird. Thanks for watching!

I hate the (tr)usdx and had a G90, replaced it with an FT-891. For CW the G90 is terrible, there’s no good way of filtering the bandwidth, so it becomes a cacophony of noise if anyone is nearby. I usually have my filters set to 100hz on my add and 891. I’m just waiting on my QMX to come from qrp labs, and I imagine I’ll retire the sdx at that point 😢.
@EvanK2EJT
@EvanK2EJT 3 күн бұрын
I have no issues narrowing the filter on the G90 to make it perfectly usable for CW. You can set the upper and lower edges just like any other radio. I've probably made around 1000 CW contacts on it with zero issues. Now, it's nowhere near as good as one of my high end radios, but it's absolutely serviceable.

Aurora's are excellent on the VHF bands, i worked hundreds of stations all over northern Europe on 144mhz using this propagation. Best thing is its cyclic, roughly every 27 or so days it occurs ! You can tell its auroral propagation by the sound and the station correctly sends a single report of 55A the 'A' signifies the auroral mode as a standard RST report, the 'T' tone is auroral !

For iPhone/iPad/iOS a good app is Morse-It. It has a number of sending and receiving tools. It is allowing me to practice on the go. I use the on screen iambic paddle, but it also supports some hardware options to allow me to hook my Bencher paddle up to my phone and practice sending with the apps exercise. I use the paid version of the app, but they also have some subscription level social addictions I don’t use. I figure once I feel proficient enough I’m going on air instead of using something like that. But the app has been helping me build proficiency and practice a little each day in a convenient manner. With phone apps it gives you the advantage or practing on the go or even on the porcelain throne 🚽

I really like the design of the TP-III. Only thing that would concern me would be how close the paddles are together and there size. If you remove the rubber boots, maybe someone could 3D print paddle covers that would friction fit over the paddle that could both increase the surface area of the paddles as well as add more meat to the outside to give a perceived wider spacing. That would probably make it a perfect paddle IMO. 73

@@EvanK2EJT It supplies a safe load, but not necessarily a 50 ohm load. If you look at the circuit you'll see that there is a bridge, two 50 ohm resistors in series to ground on the left side of the bridge and a single 50 ohm resistor in series with the load (as transformed by the tuner) to ground on the right side of the bridge. The indicator circuitry is across the bridge so that if the load becomes 50 ohms then the bridge is balanced and the indicator light goes out. Worst cases are if the load is open or shorted. A shorted load gives 100 ohms in parallel with 50 ohms, or 33.33 ohms so the SWR is 1.5. An open load gives 100 ohms so the SWR is 2.0. Anything else will give an SWR that cannot be any worse than 2.0 which should be safe for most transmitters. If you want even more protection you can build a Pi or T 50 ohm to 50 ohm pad out of three resistors to be placed between the transmitter and the ZM-2 while tuning. The more attenuation you build into the pad, the safer things will be (but the harder it will be to tell when you've come closest to a match). Of course you remove the pad after you get it tuned, just as you flip the switch on the ZM-2. Some people leave the ZM-2 switch in tune position even after completing the tuning, to go QRPp. If you get a perfect match, the resistive network in the ZM-2 will attenuate both transmitted and received signals 6 dB or 1 S unit. I wouldn't do that, because the rectifying diode and the LED might produce some (very weak) harmonics and to the extent that they made it through the tuner resonated on the fundamental, they'd get radiated. I didn't know that the ZM-2 presents a 50R load to the radio when in tune. That would make me a LOT happier tuning an unknown antenna for use with my QDX. Food for thought. I also wanted to get an Electaft tuner for my TX-500 but in the UK they are rocking horse sh*t made from Unobtanium so settled with a MAT-10 which I'm quite happy with. Similar idea as the ATU-10 in that it has latching relays so charge a couple of times a year and you are good to go. The only problem is that you should use the charger that came with it - no easy option for charging in the field if you don't have the charger - it's a weird voltage I think. I REALLY fancy one of the FX-4CR. It looks a really good radio.

I used to live back east (ex-W8EZE 1949-1966) and I remember what mosquitoes were like in the summer. (We have them here in the PNW too, but I don't think they're nearly as bad.) When I saw your bare arms and legs at the beginning of the video, I thought "he's going to get eaten alive" and that's exactly what you later said. I might be able to copy morse code while the bugs were bugging me, but I can't imagine being able to send it with any accuracy. Did you use DEET? Nothing like wearing more clothing to keep the miserable things off, though. I've been known to put on my Gore-Tex rain jacket (only thing in the pack with long sleeves) on a warm sunny day to keep from going insane while not moving at lunch time. You can drink lots and lots and lots of water if you're too hot. If car camping instead of backpacking, it's easy to keep a good supply of beer in the cooler. Were the mosquitoes less of a problem the next morning? My other suggestion is for the antenna. I really don't think a vertical is a good choice for shorter distances on the lower frequencies. Fine for DX, but if you want to work stations within a few hundred miles on 80 m or 40 m at night, a low horizontal antenna is easy to erect and very effective. Ground losses on 80 m with the short vertical and short radials must have been horrendous, and what RF did get radiated didn't get aimed at high angle the way you would want. David VE7EZM
@EvanK2EJT
@EvanK2EJT 14 күн бұрын
Yeah, the mosquitos are obnoxious, but I'm used to them LOL. As for the antenna, you are correct. The issue is that in a lot of these places you can't put anything in the trees, so a wire antenna isn't really viable. It's a pain in the butt, but it is what it is.

Great video as always. One interesting thing about the Z-match design is that it provides some additional bandpass filtering that the ATU-10 and basically most auto tuners will not ... this can help with receiver overload (e.g., in the presence of an AM station), and it can also help reduce transmit harmonics if you're operating a radio with a less than ideal filtering -- or you're running a radio with good filtering on a band that the filters weren't fine tuned for (e.g., 30m on a QMX 10m-20m high-band kit). I have a digital modes radio from crkits (orig design by Barb -- I think wb2cba), and at my home qth it is significantly more performant on 20m ft8 receive through a z-match than it is through a T-design.
