Also them talking about "combining" makes me wish an SMT or Persona game would make demon fusions where they just work together in unexpected ways. Like king frost using a jack frost to enhance his attacks or as a shield or something wacky.

Yes! The Persona series is a spinoff of Shin Megami Tensei.

Persona is a timeline of SMT where the world isn't constantly trying to reset to zero thanks to Philemon (represented by the blue butterfly). There is some other difference like Nyx in p3, being a reason people get personas etc. Also the monsters are from the sea of souls while in SMT they are literal demons - former gods and demons who lost their power once God ripped their reason from them and cast them out of power. And yes, capital G God. SMT has a lot of Christianity overpowering the other religions as a core theme.
