Thank you Brian, excellent presentation ! I always love listening to you because you get straight to the point and really know what your talking about. I always learn so many new and useful things even though I have been fly fishing for a long time already.

I am going to be at Quesnel Lake the third week in May 2024. Which chironomids would Brian recommend I use then, and which part of the lake would be best?

I don't know how many anglers have read this report with Travis, but after fishing and guiding the Ruby, Big Hole and the Beaverhead rivers for over 45 years I can attest to the fact that quality of the fishing is extremely good and after over 80 days this past season (2023) on the water I'm seeing quite a few small fish on board for the future. I have noticed that on these rivers that some fish have moved, whether due to food issues or other factors, but they have moved nevertheless. I coined a phrase years ago that "you can not raise 50 cows on an acre" spells over to trout. Catch and release, when fish numbers are high, is not always a good option. Years ago when I started fishing the upper Beaverhead we never caught a fish below 4 1/2 pounds from the damn to High Bridge. The fact was that the population in that section was very low with more fish down below. Fisherman don't give trout the credit they deserve. They have been here for thousands and thousands of years.

This guy hasn’t got a clue how to catch trout. Who in their right mind would use small flies like this? My grandpa showed me an old technique using a CIL lure. Best technique ever. Heard it here first🤓. Just kidding. Great video Brian.

This is the most comprehensive and best video I have ever seen on Chironomid fishing in the Kamloops area. Even the questions that are asked of Brian are top notch. 47:03

He knows his stuff, but I find it depressing he seems to always seem to use indicators. Call me a snobby Brit, but this just makes it too easy. You may as well just use a float rod and replace worm with a fly!

What is the best bug/crustacean to fish during the winter, under the ice. I'm in northeast Indiana, by the way. I always watch your videos and really appreciate the wealth of knowledge you share. Not many trout where I'm at, so I fish for panfish, bass, walleye, or whatever else will bite.

the difference in size compared to idaho and wyoming has a lot to do with management by fwp.. for instance .. look at the management between flathead lake and pend orielle .. montana fwp should be taking notes on how idaho is managing pend orielle .... the both have lakers and were stocked with mysis at the same time .. montana's management of flathead has turned flathead into a dud of a fishery while idaho has turned pend orielle into a trouphy trout factory.

its seems like in general montanan's especially the fly fishing community is good about catch and release .. i feel like a lot of the tourists coming to montana these days are looking to keep their fish and are unaware of the impact that keeping fish has on low fish count freestone rivers.

Keeping younger fish within your legal limits actually helps a fishery, not hurt it. But yes, release anything over 12 to 14 inches for spawning. And dont keep a limit every time you go. Theres nothing wrong with keeping and eating small trout. Get off your high horse.

im all for rivers being managed for size not number of fish.. if the lack of numbers leads to a jump in size im all for it.. we could also use a new brown trout hatchery in montana as well .. and we need to start stocking lakes with more browns then we have been.. both rainbows and browns arn't native.. and the rainbows spawn the same time as the cutts while the browns spawn later in the fall then the bulls so it seems like browns would be a better stocking option then rainbows to stock in lakes you want to preserve cutthroat and bulltrout populations... also the limits on keeping browns should be much stricter.. fwp puts no value in keeping the large browns in the river when those should be the trout that are the most protected .

🙌🏼…well said, not to mention browns can’t hybridize with bulls and will often spawn in water that bulls couldn’t. We would have some insane stillwater fisheries if brown trout fry were stocked annually. At least stock them in isolated lakes separate from all wild streams.

I was told about Brian's work a couple of weeks back while doing some naked line fishing from shore with a size #14 scud here in California. After catching a fish another angler saw that I was the only one without an indicator and asked if I'd heard of Brian's presentations before- I hadn't and I'm wondering what rock I've been under all these years! I love his passion and the warm personality he has. Thanks Brian for being so generous with your information.
