At first hydrogen seems like the perfect solution to our automotive fossil fuel problem. It’s a pura, elemental gas that is everywhere, it can be clean, it can use vehicles similar to what we have and know (i.e. ICE), and in theory, can be refuelled easily. Unfortunately, even after many decades of research by many governments and large companies (e.g. BMW), serious obstacles remain: Storing it, it’s not always clean or when it is its unaffordable. Storage is one. Compressing the gas to useful quantities for a vehicle uses considerable energy and time. Using metals to absorb and release it has limitations. Storing useful quantities of one of the most flammable gases in a vehicle adds risk similar to a low explosive. Weight or volume of the tank is greater. When burnt in an ICE engine, hydrogen’s violent combustion breaks the nitrogen bonds in air and produces copious amounts of nitrous oxides also known as smog. If using fuel cells then these are laughably expensive. Useful only with extreme budgets such as in aerospace or marketing, not affordable for the masses. Always (since the 1970s at least), the same excuse is used, that these problems will be overcome with technology and the cost will come down. But the fundamentals remain and there is no known reason (by anyone) that they will change, at least as of now. It’s a bitter pill to swallow I’m afraid. It would be nice if H2 was the perfect fuel. Electric batteries have steadily become cheaper so hopefully EVs will become affordable for the working class
