what if yu had no NaOH left over? for example 20ml of 0.5 M HCl reaction with 10ml of 1 M NaOH
@JeffLehmanJL Жыл бұрын
Look at the balanced chemical equation. In the case that you mention, there would only be products, and no leftover reactants. In this case you would have a solution of NaCl. Sodium ion and chloride ion don't have acidic or basic properties, so the pH would be that of water.

If you're talking about MgI2, it is because magnesium forms a +2 ion, and iodine forms the -1 iodide ion. Therefore, the formula requires a ratio of two iodide ions to one magnesium ion.

You are correct, shortcuts abound! However, these videos are geared toward those learning the topic for the first time. I've found that skipping steps, and applying short-cuts can often confuse first time students. Once the concept has been learned, learning short-cuts can be very helpful.

wont using n = m/ar be much easier?
@JeffLehmanJL4 жыл бұрын
I've found "easy" to be a relative term. I am not sure of the definition of your variables, but it is probably the same thing. However, I like to leverage previous expertise with dimensional analysis.
@yazannukho57544 жыл бұрын
@@JeffLehmanJL It is the same thing and I meant easier by which it consumes much less time. For the variables small n= Moles m= Mass And Ar or Mr Ar= atomic mass and Mr is the relative molecular mass. I believe this is called the mole triangle formula

For the volume of dilute why he didnt add the 6.2 to 50
@JeffLehmanJL4 жыл бұрын
Ah, good question. There is a difference between "dilute to" and "dilute with". "Dilute to" means that the diluted volume is the new volume. "Dilute with" means that the two volumes are additive.

In a solution of NaCN the ph is 8.710 find CN- concentration, I follow these exact steps and it isn’t what my answer key says. do I have to do something different because I am finding a weaker base ion than OH-? please help
@JeffLehmanJL4 жыл бұрын
Yep, there is additional work. NaCN will dissociate into Na+ and CN-. Then CN-, being a weak base (the conjugate base of a weak acid HCN) will react with the water to form HCN. This will tie up some of the CN- as HCN, and the remaining CN- will be in solution. You'll need the Ka of HCN to solve this. Ka = [CN-] [H3O+] /[HCN]. The problem gives you the H3O+ concentration, so with that you should be able to calculate the CN- concentration. Think about the H3O+/CN- ratio in the balanced equation.
