Hi, I have the exact same saw Husqvarna 181se, about 6 years ago(2014) the crankshaft roller bearing cage broke and a small part of it scored a deep groove in the cylinder. After I replaced the roller bearing on the crank I purchased the Meteor kit like you have, but the problem I found with the Meteor cylinder was that the carburettor assembly would not mate flat with the machined inlet face on the cylinder, there was a small gap at the bottom of the face and would not close because the carb assembly was resting on the casing of the saw. I compared dimensions and machined faces of the original cylinder to the Meteor, I found the angle of the inlet face in relationship to the base on the Meteor cylinder was 90 degrees, but, on the original it was approx 91 degrees to allow the carb assembly to slope upwards towards the rear to clear the saw casing. So I had to spend an hour a with a file and fine wet'n'dry paper attached to flat piece of steel to achieve a flat surface with the same angle as the original cylinder, after I did this everthing fitted okay. I contacted Meteor to report the problem and to be fair, they offered to pay for my time. I don't know wether they did anything about the problem, but it would be interesting to know if anyone else has encountered the same problem. It seems common knowledge that the Meteor pistons are made in Italy but the cylinders in their kits are made in China.

9traktor You are correct! I have been to the factory and this is how they do it, granted, much faster as it is all they do and their design. This was my first attempt to disassemble. Much more research and development on my part in becoming a "skilled technician". I do my own work so the local shops crew of high school kids can't charge me an arm and a leg to destroy unobtainable exotic rare hand made parts. They gotta at least know as much as I do.... you can clearly see the mess that is my workbench. Several different projects from several different "hobbies" I also dabble in. Life is grand and to short to have only one source of fun!

I am glad you put in a new piston - the originals had a tendency to crack. (25 - 30 years ago, but anyway).
@MrRioting
@MrRioting 7 жыл бұрын
I hadn't heard that. As it turns out, the original piston is still good enough to use, though a bit sloppy, but after 30 years of use, one can't complain. It has no cracks in it, but then again, I used only the factory Husqvarna mix from day one. I am concerned more about the aftermarket piston, actually, having no experience with them. I do like the 88 CCs and the decompression button. :-) I am trying to find the original piston rings to go with the old piston in case I have to use it again. Hard to find! Meanwhile, I am building a 288 from all new, and new old stock parts. I will post that video series once I get it all together. Just for fun, after it fires up, I will put it in the display case. (That's where all teh parts are currently, in their original boxes.)

I mean powder is the best but am I better off lapping the Grands Montets gondola and other more accessible pow?
@MrRioting
@MrRioting 4 жыл бұрын
Wow. WIsh I would have seen this comment 3 years ago! I have been to Chamonix 3 times now, the first time for 2 weeks which was a period of discovery. I gazed at Vallee Blanche from the top of the Piton Nord and wished I could do it. I did laps on all the other fantastic resorts, one of my favorite is Le Verte at Les Houches, which is the race course for the Kandahar Downhill Coupe Du Monde (World Cup), every 4 years. I love that one going full speed like they do. Grand Montets on a pow day is phenomenal. Done laps there every time, however, Like Aguille Du Midi, you need to get an early reservation to make the first trip up the second gondola, and get there way early to get in the huge line to get an early start up the first gondola which all the locals know, so your chances of getting a lot of laps from the top, (phenomenal) are slim. It is, however EPIC, and there are no bad runs unless you go in a cravasse which is totally possible in many locations. I have heard that the best snow in the universe is Grand Montets in SUMMER. The Argentere Glacier allegedly has velvet snow in summer. Haven't been. As for the Vallee Blanche, it is definitely not for everyone, and you can surely die there EASY, as I almost did the second trip to Chamonix when locals told me I didn't need a guide, just follow everybody else around the right side of the "island"... And instead, I followed Mom, Dad and the Kinds around the left side which was fraught with peril and that family were all expert tele skiers and I was on a snowboard. I almost got my self killed. Yet, I went back the third time on a powder day and it was EPIC. This is the video. 2 hours of it have been cut. Had delusions of grandeur that we would make at least 2 trips that day as we were in the 9th car up. after the grueling trip down, and the hike out, we went and ate sushi and drank sake instead. Yes it was worth it! I will do it again someday soon!
@kenb9762
@kenb9762 8 жыл бұрын
Taking into consideration the hiking/traversing/crashing; when you are riding the powder is it all worth it? I'll be in Chamonix Jan 2017 and am on the fence about snowboarding Vallee Blanche

See above. You MUST be in good shape, and if you are a good powder skier, as in EXPERT, no problem. If you are NOT, don't waste your time. Folks get helicoptered out of there in stretchers all day long every day. Still, both times I have gone were 2 of the most excellent and epic adventures in my life! It will make you feel insignificant due to it's grand scale and harsh reality and stuning beauty.

That unit was custom made by a guy in Nevada County back in the 80s at his machine shop. It literally is just a piece of aluminum that was turned on a lathe, and then drilled on a press or a mill. The base is flat and simply bolts to the white plastic "air horn" where the filter screw nuts are embedded. Then you replace the normal filter screws, which are captured in the factory air filter, and replace them with allen screws. It's a pretty cool set up, HOWEVER! Husky came out with a "Heavy Duty" filter a few years back that also needed a kit. That consisted of a different air horn that replaces the white unit, that has a larger diameter intake that looks similar to this unit. The kit also contained a large square paper filter and a larger, taller cover that fits over the gi-normous HD filter. I have found the filters online, but the air horn is discontinued unfortunately. I am thinking about having one of those made from aluminum as well. The new filter is held on by a hose clamp and doesn't need screws. The green weenie also his clamped on. Not a great system but it is what somebody came up with in the 80s to allow better breathing, which increased horsepower greatly, as well as not needing to be cleaned after every tank of fuel, which matters to pro fallers who get paid by how much wood they put on the ground each day.

Oh, as to fitting the rings, this was a meteor kit that had the cylinder, piston, rings and circlips complete. It all fit. The original was pretty sloppy, but I kept them anyway. I hear you can nicasil the cylinder and thereby add enough material to refit the piston tightly. I've never done it and the idea of spending the money on a damn chainsaw is ridiculous, and yet, I will probably do it for kicks!

Funny thing is, I used it and a 288 I got off EBay to fall the trees in my videos called " Amateur Yahoo Woodcutters....." I felled about 25 trees and then went to another job and a screw had vibrated out and broke off 2 fins off the flywheel fan. I got a used Swedish SEM original off eBay, put it on and it fired right up. It ran about 15 seconds and sheared the woodruff key on the flywheel and quit! I just got it back together today, but no fuel mix to try it out. There will be yet another addendum to this saga as I refuse to let this fire breather die!

Enjoyed the Video. Lets see and here it run. I do have one question. Did you have to fit the rings to the bore? The machines I have placed new pistons and rings in always required fitting the rings to a specific finished end gap, leaving room for expansion. Awaiting your reply and again thanks.

The 3 digit model number denotes a few things: the 2 digit models are home user models designed to cut wood for 10 seasons reliably. The 3 digit models are designed for professional loggers to work every day for 10 years reliably. The first digit is the series. The second and third digits denote the displacement in cubic centimeters, therefore, a 181 is the first series of an 81 cc chainsaw. The 281 would be the second series or generation with some improvements without changing the complete design of the saw. The 288 would therefore be the second series design of the 80 cc sized saw but with an 88 cc engine as an additional horsepower upgrade. So to answer your question, 88cc.

+bill block if you look at my channel, my videos, there is a whole series on building this with addendum a as I started using it, as well as a series of videos using the saw to fell a bunch of drought stricken tall pines that were killed by bark beetles. We are having an epidemic of beetle kills due to low sap pressure from lean water times. As for the displacement, the 181 becomes , technically a 188! It's 88cc with that piston kit. The only differences between the 181 and 281 is the throttle and the vibration dampener on the front bucking spike. The 288 was then the latest model with the embellishment of a larger cylinder comets with a decompression button for easy starting. 99% of parts are interchangeable between the 3 models, and since the crank is the same, the newer larger pistons are made to weigh the same for balancing so they just go right in. Allegedly! In my last video about this build, I replaced the woodruff key that goes on the flywheel as it sheared from undertightening
