I am a big fan of the Apothecary Diaries (AD) in Light Novel, Manga, and the recent anime (now through episode 18 of 24). The story does not get into “exciting” parts immediately, but builds an understanding of the characters, motivations, character, and how they fit into the familiar yet exotic other-world Imperial China. Since your review was directed to the written and draw series, I don’t think spoilers need to be avoided. The build up and relationship developments as backstories emerge as well simple to complex mysteries actually makes me pay more attention and causes me to re-read the story as so much foreshadowing and multiple links emerge. The backstory of Laken and his family, Gaoshun family, and recently Gyokuyou from the west bring even more depth to this wonderful beautiful but also cruel world. The series build up of Brothel/Pleasure District, Rear Palace/Outer Palace, North and West Territories, the Apothecary medicine, herb, treatment Gremlin Maomao, … these remind me of another Light Novel, Manga, and Anime (season 4 in 2024?) with bookloving Gremlin Rozemyne/Myne Ferdinand and their world. I adore this series of Ascendance of a Bookworm as our heroine explores (rises is not right since her core character does not change) through commoner, priestess, duchy noble, and eventually incarnation of a Goddess. Aside from magic and mana, the story is full of little mysteries and events that do a lot of foreshadowing and connect across the many many volumes. I really enjoy all the dialog, character/world discover, wonderful characters with humor and in some cases tragedy, … this more leisurely read may not hit todays action focused “get-on-with-it” audience but I find it wonderful like Jane Austin novels and their movie versions that I also enjoy. It’s wonderful hearing the dialog, knowing nothing is offered for no reason (usually for many connection then and in the future), and the world building with real depth. I hope many many others take a bit of time and become immersed in the world of Maomao (or Ascendance of a Bookworm or 1800 English Country Gentle-world) they will be wonderfully rewarded.

100 Girlfriends is actually supposed to be a parody manga, which is why it is filled with all of the clichés. There truly are no bad characters in this manga, even if there are some that may slightly annoy you, there really isn't a reason to dislike them. Rentarou and his girlfriends all have very wholesome and loving relationships, and it seems unfair to pin the writing as "lazy".
@spiraken
@spiraken 4 ай бұрын
You bring up a great point @peak_fiction3085 , I completely agree that there are no bad characters in the series and I do love the fact that Rentarou genuinely loves each and every girl. It makes him a better harem protagonist than 60% of the ones I have read over the years. Its also a great quality for him to be actually interested in each of the characters wants and needs. I also understand that it is a parody of the whole genre, and every good parody must focus on the tropes of the genre. But as I said, its quantity over quality. After a while, many of the girls are going to be forgotten and replaced with "The Next Trope Girl", which does the characters a disservice. The many characters also become very one note. Many other harem series with over 15 love interests suffer from this problem. A good example of this is Negima! Magister Negi Magi, I love that series and all of the 31 students/ potential love interests in it. They are all unique, have great personalities, and have wholesome relationships with Negi. The issue is that after a character is introduced, they were thrown to the side and almost completely forgotten. (with the exception of the 9 main girls Asuna, Yue, Nodoka, Setsuna, Chisame, Evangeline, Ku Fei, Konoka, and Haruna). It just happens with books with larger casts, you take short cuts to make the story work. I just feel that after the first 15, they just become [Insert name, Insert Cliche], and I fear that this is where the story will end. Still, I could be 100% wrong and if they can pull it off, where all 100 girls get equal time and are fairly represented throughout the entire series, I would be pleasantly surprised. Still I understand and respect your opinion on it. I may just be jaded after reading so many harem series. No matter what, whatever you enjoy reading/watching is cool to do.Everyone has a different taste and it makes things unique and awesome. Either way. Thank you for the comment and Keep Reading Manga

@spiraken
@spiraken 10 ай бұрын
There was more space in the dealers room and not many booths at Otakon this year. If this was your first year you would not have noticed but as an Otakon regular, it was obvious. Hopefully next year, there will be more dealers and or more industry guests. On another note, I will say that the guide book app for the dealers room map was erroring all weekend. it was a bit frustrating to say the least. I didn't want to include it in the con report because it was technically not their fault.

I missed your train manga panel, but I made it to the collection panel Saturday morning (I'm the guy on the right sitting by himself almost in the spotlight there); always a pleasure to see your panels, and how prepared you are, especially when I don't get to conventions like I used to. The dealers room was pretty interesting this year. Definitely a lot less stuff, it felt like, but I greatly appreciated more open space between booths and not feeling shuffled through the lines until I peeled off from the crowd. Looking forward to next year already, though. Going to try my hardest to make it!

I'm no expert, but the 4 second music camera panning intro felt a bit uh...brief? Music was upbeat & made me want to see more of what the camera was going to show, and then it ended quickly. I heard that the first 30 seconds of YT videos is important to grab audience, but it felt like something that looked engaging got taken away prematurely. But what do I know.

Im not following your logic, The only difference between Ichikawa and Tadano from Komi is that you actually see Ichikawa before he gets out of his chuuni phase. They both were chuuni kids when they were younger and they grow into caring helpful people.
@spiraken
@spiraken 10 ай бұрын
that is a very valid point. They are the same person at two different points in their life. I wanted to show Ichikawa as he was during the beginning of the manga and did not want to spoil the backstory of Tadano For people who did not read the manga and it ended up shading them as two very different characters when they are really similar. I can see that i did not convey my meaning as well as I thought i did and for that I do apologize for. Still I do love that Ichikawa grows up into his own and becomes an amazing person in his own way. Also excellent catch. i hope this kind of explains the logic

@@spiraken May i suggest some difference in the titles to indicate the difference? Otherwise, it kind of looks like unnecessary bloat or spam. If you help viewers know the difference, it will help them determine which one they prefer to watch. Most people probably don't want to listen to redundant/repeated material. Double upload might cannibalize some views from each as they share the same content. Just some feedback thoughts.

I've watched anime for a few years and only recently got into the source material. (Manga, and light novels.) This was the first series I ever bought the source material for. I love this series and I can't exactly say why. I'm a sucker for good characters and plot. Probably my most valued things in any manga/anime/form of media. But this has one main character. And no real plot but it is my favorite anime/manga/light novel. I find it quite odd. But I think it may be the mix of everything it has to offer. Heavy stories, dark stories, light hearted ones, horror, comedy, action, mystery. I could go on. There's so much here that there is something for everyone. I also like how grounded Elaina is as a person. Most people like to self insert and think about what they would do in various situations. The reality is, most would run or turn a blind eye or not get involved in certain scenarios. Which is exactly what Elaina does. There's no closure to some of the stories, or things are left vague. Open-ended. I like how real that is because most people would do the same. Again, I'm not sure why I like this series so much. I'm not a traveler and have no want to explore the world. Characters and plot are the most important things to me in a story. And while those things rank low in Wandering Witch, for some goddamn reason this is my favorite series I've read/watched.
