Or a chassis mount connector. Or silicone from your local store. Or split the coax and crimp on a UHF or N female to make a short pigtail.

Interesting presentation Michael, thank you. It gets me thinking. I enjoyed looking at the rigs in the background. Do you ever listen to the Hallicrafter SX-110? Jim, W5JCS
@mikemurphy1940Күн бұрын
Hi Jim, the 110 has become a shelf queen. It is because of this radio that I am a ham today. My dad had one and my parents told me that I would stand in front of it for hours when i was very young, 2 or 3 years old, and spin the knobs. Lots of memories. I would like to get it working again if I can find someone to work on it for me.

Hi Sean, great information. I've been hoping to accomplish contact with a satellite in the near future. I purchased an Yeasu FT-65. It comes with an interesting feature called "VFO Split Mode". The advanced manual states it can be used for satellite communications. My plan was to buy one cheaper radio that was quality built. Do you have any experience or knowledge of this menu feature? Does it work? I really hope I made a good decision.

My IC-905 is very cool! I have an IC-9700 and an IC-7300. It is a pleasure to operate and an intuitive cousin to its predecessors. The radio is inherently stable and easily deployed for roving, listening around and for EMCOMM. I haven't yet tried to use it as a D-STAR gateway, but if idle and available when I get the interest, I will try it. I want to try video once I get a camera. I still need to build up a frame to hold the antennas and radio, but so far, so good! This radio leaves you with a few gaps that some have addressed creatively resolved. For 902 MHz, one creative ham switches in the 144 MHz output as an IF and for 3400 MHz he switches in the 432 MHz on the IF. This just leaves 222 MHz. I have transverters for these bands and may just use my other ICOM radios as IF rigs. Another solution is the Q5 Signal five band transverter on the 144/222/432/902/1296 MHz bands driven by my IC-7300. Alas, the Q5 AND an IC-705 aren't in the budget... at least not this year! I'm blessed to have the IC-905 and 10 GHz module. Anyone want a QSO in the southeast?

Honestly Yaesu killed the FTdx10 by not installing a receive only antenna port. I was seriously considering it but having antenna options is a big thing to me.

Thanks for these great insights, fellas. A not to the camera operator, we want to see the radio not the speakers. I suggest zooming in to the radio, using a tripod and leave it. Ideally, the camera would be motionless.

A updated, Ham version of the Vertex VX-1210 would be really cool. I had one and it was nice for portable operations, but programming and tuning around the ham bands was a pain.
@chriscaddel756812 күн бұрын
1- The scope averaging in all three radios is simply not there 2- You guys need a better solution for remoting, that module is not efficient 3- DNR is too agressive and creates distortion.

I can certainly see one of these in the emergency trailor and at each of the eoc's. The assessment role is one that many ARES/RACES/CETT supported teams have when working with Emergency management operations. Would love to see how well that would work and what it would take to make it all play. Thanks for the good summary.
