I don’t think the community does itself any favors by considering the FAA to be the Lovecraftian eye in the sky. It likely keeps many people operating in the shadows at various levels…and that’s even worse…

Good story, I fly class C all the time. My ELT falsely went off during takeoff in a class C, couldn’t hear anything over ELT, I could’ve definitely gotten a number bc I deviated and headed back towards the airport. I didn’t declare emergency but told them the situation

I've worked in brand new 172s back to M models, diamonds, pipers...pretty much everything. I appreciate the access to things in the belly of the mooney, working on brake cylinders is really annoying but for Mooney it's in the belly along with most everything else. Mooneys were designed for owners, really. They are not for flight schools or time builders generally. For this reason they're a lot cheaper but, unlike most other GA trainers, the more complex systems add to more maintenance overall. Having retractable gear and a constant speed is just not desirable for maintenance costs. Personally id probably rather own one over a piper but diamond or cessna would be my preference

I'm loving watching this series. However, I can feel my anxiety rise as I hear you say you have a suspected fouled plug, rough running engine, high oil temps, but you decided to take off like that in high DA and fly over a mountain range based on, "It was probably just a fouled plug and I think I burned it off." I know it's easy to sit back and judge as an armchair pilot, but that could have gone very badly.

If you ever get back to Orofino, you ought to take a crew car and run up to Dworshack Dam. It's my backyard, basically. Pretty quick drive up to the Dam 15 to 20 minute drive. Glad you enjoyed your trip.

Johnson Creek is NOT the backcountry. Cars, trucks, and 4 wheelers run there daily, and frequently park there for weeks. But your Mooney might feel at home on Indian Creek. And IC is indeed in the backcountry. No cars or trucks.

As for the mechanic part…if you do enough work with them and you go about it within the regs you can eventually test for your A&P after a couple of years or something like that. Now that’s a future investment of aircraft ownership right there.

Remember that day, I had about 10 hours of fly time, and I was flying the school plane, that rocket 152, and landed on this dirt road behind my house, I live on Sinaloa México,and wanted to take my girlfriend and a niece for a ride. I had landed and taken off from there, to practice short landings, and never had a problem Well, picked up my passengers, and started running down the road,at the end, there's this little creek, and this thing wouldn't go any faster than 45, I was thinking it would act like when I was by myself, but with the two extra people, it wouldn't move I couldn't stop, and since I apply the flaps until just before going up, I applied full flaps, it jumped into the air, made it across the creek, and started going down, on the other side, but it never touched the ground, but there were power lines on the other side, and I had to go under them Some how, this thing went up at around 45 mph, so I kept practicing it, and made it every time. But that time, it sure scared the hell out of me, and almost gut those girls killed. Never told them a thing, though, they said it had been an awesome ride. Since I am a dear devil, they thought it was something just to scare them. I was always doing crazy stuff, lucky never killed myself Now, I do crop spraying, which I love, and got pretty good at landing in short strips, but I do dive landing, which was also pretty scary at first, but now I do it with my eyes closed.

Spins are not as bad as many pilots think. To be honest, most planes will come out of a spin by power to idle and let go of all controls then recover from the dive.

What's the rest of the story? What happened with Jerry and Phil? Did you find out what was up with the mag and brakes? Did he relocate the plane? Did it get repoed? Was it in annual? Did Jerry also owe money to that airport and thus the reason for the ferry flight? Did the police find Phil? Did Phil make it back to the asylum? : )

I had a partnership in a Cherokee 140 which my wife and I used for most cross country flights. My skybolt is quite loud, so ANR head sets are a must.

Everyone makes mistakes; recognizing and learning from mistakes makes you a better pilot. As far as I can tell, the main mistake was not circling just outside of the airspace while waiting for a confirmation call of "You are cleared...". I busted a corner of the LAX airspace once, over Dodger stadium coming out of KSMO, because I was reading a paper map wrong. I didn't get "call this number" but I did get "say intentions". And then I got a handheld GPS!
