I’m really sorry about that. I can’t imagine losing my dad at such a young age. Especially with how many aviation memories we have made in the last 6 years. At its core, my channel is really just a complicated oil-stained shrine to the memories created by a dad with his sons. Even the videos that my dad isn’t specifically in, he still plays a role behind the scenes, and none of these adventures would have happened if it wasn’t for him. I get a lot of comments about how valuable these memories are, and it refocuses me on appreciating the present every time. You never know what the future holds.

It didn’t take nearly as much as it should have, but that’s because my dad has extensive experience with the early bonanzas. If you have a knowledgeable mechanic and the airplane has been out of the elements, it could cost less than 10 grand to get it airworthy. If it’s in rough shape there really isn’t a ceiling to how much it could cost.

Think that was an illusion from the long camera zoom. Looks like plane was in front of the tree and wind was also obviously blowing the tree. The plane shadowed the tree cause you can from what direction the sunlight is coming from the other trees lining the runway.

You wouldn't weld that seat back in, they are press-fit by putting a new seat in the freezer and getting the cylinder head hot in an oven (or just with a torch), then getting the head in a hydraulic press and pressing it in. Then you need to do a valve job to cut the seat to match a new valve.

Having done this to some degree on short field in my 47, I would say your dad is right. Physics don't lie. Came in too short on the runway or too slow / or both IMHO. Doesn't take much of a gust to drop you out of the sky. I was short-fielding at 75mph which is above the approach speed. Not too much wind that day and about 10' up from the runway, got caught on the flare and stalled my left wing. I caught it fast, but plonked down on the runway enough that I stopped and got out and looked. So I added another 5mph and made my aiming port another 100' down the runway. Should be able to stop easily on grass once the wheels are down and brakes are applied.
@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot
@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot 4 ай бұрын
Didn’t come in too short, but too slow is possible. Gopro cameras and a phone camera 1000’ away have a hard time with depth perception, but I was never really aiming short of the runway. My touchdown point was right at the start of the clearing, and after the gust and subsequent throttle goosing, my touchdown spot moved about 50 feet further down the runway. I’ve landed downhill to the north at about 100 mph indicated when I have a pretty significant headwind, but it is not a fun experience. The runway disappears real quick, and the last 500’ is a very steep hill. You don’t want to be going faster than 20 mph trying to stop it’s so steep. All that being said, yeah, I clipped a bush one time, out of the 60-80 times I’ve landed that direction. I would prefer the number to be zero, but it is what it is.

Since the video was made we had 5/6 cylinders off chasing down a rough running engine. We were just certain it had to be a sticking valve. It was the carb…🤦‍♂️ On the bright side we got a good look at the internals and it’s clean as a whistle. Cylinders are chrome so no rust concerns there.

Interesting that your dad is 6'8" and fits, I'm 6'7" and I would like to take flight lessons. But it always seemed like it would be about as comfortable as a dungeon in small planes. Maybe not. The 35s in these two videos, they look pretty much stock as they came back in the 40s and 50s, is that correct? Maybe besides the propellers. I have seen some for sale on some of the airplane sale sites for almost reasonable money, but then when I look at the interiors and panels the first thought on my mind is that it's going to take $50-$100K to bring them up to snuff. But you guys seem to op them vintage. Do you find yourself replacing a lot of parts at annuals or are they reasonably reliable?
@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot
@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot 4 ай бұрын
We do Vfr only flight, so I get by with bone stock panel with a decent con radio and flight plan go free gps on my phone for navigation. I can go all over the country day or night with that set up. I have no experience with ifr flight, but I imagine it would take a lot of upgrading to make our fleet ifr capable.

On the E Series the oil is leaking back into the case through the check valve. As stated you must check after shut down. Preferably as soon as you shut down. Yes I check during preflight to see if there is oil on the chain.

@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot
@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot 4 ай бұрын
Lol I clean my dads plane all the time. It’s a useless gesture because it gets dirty again literally the next flight. The 2100 hr engine leaks oil like a sieve, we mist MMO throughout the airframe every couple of years for corrosion prevention bad it seeps out all the skin joints, and landing off airport 95% of the time means a pretty good amount of mud and grass get in the gear and interior of the plane. What you’re seeing is clean. You should see what it looks like now.
