I can explain the reason for two of those names, but I’m not sure about the “Penguins.” The “Buckeyes” were named that, because there’s a lot of buckeye trees growing in Ohio and the early settlers in Ohio were nicknamed “Buckeyes.“ That was before it became the state of Ohio. Akron took the name “Zips,” from what I heard, because they helped develop the zipper. I saw Basile in Atlanta once and after the show, we went to a bar next-door and he came in and sat near us. One of the ladies with us asked asked how he got his name, “Basile” and why he wasn’t named “Nutmeg.” He said, “that’s my sister‘s name.“ Too funny!
