I'm not sure what it is, maybe something to do with the adapting we all have to do to enjoy 60's TV in the first place, but with the exception of a few popular ones like the Aztecs, the Dalek and Cyberman stories, and the Time Meddler, everyone I've seen ranks First Doctor stories wildly differently. Any one story is loved by some and hated by others and thought okay by others still. It's strange. For me, Space Museum is actually one of my favorites, and the weird comedy of the Romans doesn't appeal.

My own personal favourite is Day of the Daleks. The thing about classic Doctor Who is that there are always flaws, whether they are in the script , the production, the direction, the acting, the sets, the design etc and your enjoyment of a story often depends on how much the good aspects outweigh the flaws. In the case of Day of the Daleks I find that the flaws don't really bother me. The Daleks aren't written into the story that well and they aren't portrayed or directed well. But I don't mind. The story is really good, the pacing is good, the acting is good - in particular I loved Aubrey Woods. He is great as a slimy, self-serving, cruel controller of the human workers acting as a middleman for the Daleks but he also convinces as a man who, in his own twisted way, is trying to do the best for those humans who are being worked to death and his transformation when the Doctor convinces him to switch sides and help destroy the Daleks, which leads to his own self-sacrifice, is very moving. That aspect of the story is mirrored by the guerrillas who are genuinely trying to save the human race by killing Reginald Styles but through their interactions with the Doctor eventually realise that they are actually helping to bring about its destruction. It's that element of tragedy in those two parts of the story that gives this story an amount of depth that, for me, make it one of the most emotionally satisfying stories of Doctor Who that I have watched.

You say what you like, the cliffhanger at the end of episode 4 of The Invasion of Time, when the Doctor thinks he's won and the Sontarons appear from nowhere, was one of the most thrilling things I've ever seen in my life. I was 8 and in heaven.

@@IsaacWhittakerDakin As with all classic Doctor Who there's good and bad. The good in this is very good. The overall story of a planet on the edge of the galaxy with enormous energy resources being mined by a group of humans is good. Acting by Frederick Jaeger as Professor Sorenson is outstanding. He completely convinces as a man trying to do the right thing but is lost in his own delusions. He looks as if he hasn't slept in weeks, he's baffled by this planet which seems to take back the powerful crystals which he has mined but he is determined to carry on in order to save his home planet. He's a man out of his depth. The monster looks great with its outline and has a good sound effect to accompany it. The initial transformation of Professor Sorenson is played very well with the camera taking his point of view in the kills. His agony as he 'changes' into the monster temporarily is played very well and reminds us he's not some mad scientist but a human being. The jungle looks fantastic - the plants look totally strange and creepy. The two regulars are great -their interplay is excellent and Tom Baker has some moments of real gravitas which sell the seriousness of the situation. The bad points are Prentis Hancock who hams it up continuously as the leader of the rescue team and the final transformation by Sorenson into the monster which is not half as scary as his transformation earlier in the story where he couldn't actually see him - the power of the imagination of the viewer is always stronger than showing us a man in a wig doing a slow pained walk. Liz Sladen said in the DVD extra that this was her favourite story and I can see why.

The Twelfth Doctor. I'm sorry, but I truly hated this Doctor. Peter Capaldi was probably the biggest fanboy to take the role, and he played the role as if he was anything but. I admit that I saw very few of Capaldi's stories since I never had access to the channel in the States, but I've seen enough on KZfaq to really color my dislike of the character. As I noted in your Sixth Doctor ranking video, Capaldi pretty much got what Colin Baker truly wanted for HIS Doctor: a callback to the Hartnell Doctor in that you could never truly trust his motives and by how unlikeable he started out. Baker said he wanted his Doctor to earn respect and gradually, over the course of three or more seasons, learn how to be a hero again. That's pretty much the story arc Capaldi got, and Baker never did. But Baker was able to leaven his characterization thanks to Big Finish, which proved he could still be off-putting, narcissistic, and nasty, but, in the end, darkly loveable. Capaldi never really GOT that leavening, and, to me, he remained this unlikeable creature throughout. And I never really appreciated any of his companions. When they weren't trying to ascribe ulterior motives and introduce needlessly complicated origin stories, we never really got a true companion to assist the Doctor. I never liked Clara (except her body /snark), and Twelve's other companions weren't so much assisting the Doctor as awaiting their own storyline to take them away. The approach simply didn't work. Now, I know some will disagree, calling Capaldi's Doctor underrated, but I never felt that. Even in his final story, Twice Upon a Time, he never really won any appreciation from me. Even Hartnell won a lot of appreciation by the end of his term, and Colin was very much reprieved by his Big Finish stories. Capaldi's "twenty-minute" speech right before regenerating left me cold. It was one of a handful of episodes I did see - mostly because of the First Doctor's appearance - and I was just screaming "SHUT UP AND CHANGE ALREADY!!" It really is too bad. After years of the young-ish "Madmen in a Box," we really wanted a more mature Doctor to lead the way, but it just failed miserably for me since I never warmed up to this Doctor. It was what we needed, and it simply wasn't enough.

For the first time in 30 years of being a fan, the Smith era is where I got to the point where I enjoyed it so little, I rarely rewatched it after transmission, so I struggle to remember stories names and which season they were in, etc, and many merge into one for me. Sadly, it's only got worse since. Looking at this list is like re-living trauma. 39 stories and I like 3 (Vincent, Amy's Choice & Doctor's Wife). It strikes me that Moffat is a great ideas man who lacks discipline and self-control. RTD has overall great vision, but is a bit of a hack when it comes to writing individual episodes and didn't really give us a great story until his 4th year on the job. Imagine, if RTD was the producer and Moffat his script editor? Working together, these two could have tempered each others worse traits... but unfortunately, we get "showrunners" - and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Good list, I agree with the top six, but not necessarily in that order. Human Nature is top for me. Also, I would class Utopia as a single story. Just because they both feature the Master and run concurrently - so do Logopolis and Castrovalva. Just a note on Christmas Invasion, you mark it down for not featuring the Doctor much, and I get it, it's Tennent's debut, but it's kind of the point of the story. Seven million humans bought to their knees and the Doctor wakes up, post regeneration and single-handedly beats the Sycorax with ease. It shows how much we need the Doctor and makes this new incarnation look damned heroic, certainly compared to the last Doctor (seriously - how many times did someone else or chance save the day in Ecclestone's run? I think it was every story!).
