Also happy that the attitude of the majority of civilians, is a LOT better towards veterans, than it was after Vietnam! I'd have probably killed the first moron that spit in my face then! I'm also really glad, that no letter like this was ever needed for me, to my family! It was bad enough that 2 of my best friends, from the service, killed themselves, from the stress/strain of what they had to see/do! (Tim and Danny - I will NEVER forget you, Brothers! Sigh...)

This is incredible, and thanks for complying it. My son is in Ukraine as a doctor, and says he won't be home until Ukraine wins. He left behind his wife and children to help fight this war. It's either Ukrainians winning or WW3. Putin is castrating Ukrainian men and raping Ukrainian children and women - amongst other atrocities. How do you know when you're truly f***ed? ... The background music stops playing. Upside down, everything distorted by G and nothing on the clock but the makers name. - (Old RAF adage intended to lift one's spirits in times of bleak adversity) :) Niche.... This is massive Props- (Only done here) to my Father Sqn Ldr Alan Withey and also goes out to his best buddy MSgt Jim Thomas USAF- EOD Expert- (that's where he and my Dad met on the EOD Course). Jim used to meet us at USAF base High Wycombe in UK and he spend Christmas with us at my Nana's in Bristol. Got great Xmas pics from 1973-4. Jim did 3 tours in Viet Nam as a USAF EOD Specialist. He got a Citation from President Nixon for defusing runway landed bombs that had a 3-4 second ticker as soon as you moved them. He reversed a military grade truck back down the runway and flipped 30+ of them into the back of the dumper truck by hand where they exploded. Very hot and sweaty runway. Birds circling to land with desperately wounded US. He survived and saved 50-60+ American lives. (conjecture, but unless they landed here there was nowhere else for them to go and no fuel). One mistake and it would have been game over; for many of them.. IMHO, a Citation from the president was great but he deserved a CMH for that. I would welcome comments as to your thoughts? Talk about pressure.... The guy wouldn't blink if the sun went out. When he died in 2014, the Mayor of Homestead, Florida, the Miami Police Department and his USAF buddies all turned out to send him off as he deserved. He was laid to rest in the Military Cemetery in Homestead, FL Great respect also to Sqn Leader Alan Withey 43 Sqn, RAF. (Officer, Fighter Pilot, Gentleman, Scholar and expert technical builder). On good days, he also got people to shift their asses. He died in 2020 from an Aneurism brought on by Covid, caught whilst he was in hospital. That's what's on his death cert. TBH, I know I am biased, but all through my Military career, I've never met an Officer quite like him. I never told him that, but it is testament to him that he did the Airbourne Course (P-Company) and had two sets of wings on his uniform. (Damn few). As such when the local Para officer in Aden got wounded and subsequently ex-filled. They sent my Dad in to deal with A) The local Mullahs and B) to lead a Company of 1 Para on crowd control, despite recovering from his wounds and C) to act as FOO to take out terrorist insurrections whilst he was dealing with A & B. Nice work if you can get it. Dirch. The barriers you pushed, the lives you saved and not took. Those are the ones that ,make it worth while on reflection. Always a fair and decent man, you were never blighted by the stain of anti- religion or race. Everyone trusted you, even your ex-wife (my Mum). I could go on all day long, but Dad, strapped into your Hunter over hostile enemy territory in Aden in the 60's you excelled yourself as a combat pilot. (5 rounds took out a technical) from the air. That was some damn good shooting Dad whilst they were firing a 30 Cal. equivalent at you. And that was just one of many. The thing was, grainy as gun cams were back then it was clearly destroyed and on the ground only 5 rounds were fired. I remember you telling me that the Flight Sgt. was pissed because your plane was rippled to shit with rounds and had to be grounded. Gotta love those Hunters. We all miss you. Selfishly, me more than anyone, as your 1st born son and because of everything and our last years together, I miss you. Our wounds aside, we could both still walk. It weighs very heavy on me the cost of War on our friends and their families. The loss, the permeant injuries, the need to blank it out. The ones we love that have to put up with the fallout, much as we try and hide it. You were the inspiration to me and many others. I loved the chance that after the dust had settled for both of us we got the chance to just hang out for years before the final accident and chat old War stories and lie about women that loved us. All those Navigators and Air Force personnel you trained to fly (as Chief Flying Instructor at RAF Akrotiri. You've changed their lives forever as you did mine.
