Duck cast the first stone and Diesel cast one back but did so below the belt, so to say. Duck was right to be suspicious of Diesel but he brought the events of Duck and the Diesel Engine on himself. I used to think it was a mistake by John T. Kenney but the fact that he depicted EDWARD of all engines as being sick and tired of Duck, had to be deliberate. It was to truly show how much of an obnoxious ass Duck was being in order for the kindest, most patient character to be annoyed with him. No doubt Awdry probably instructed Kenney to specifically add Edward to the scene in order to demonstrate that it's not just the typical moaning and whining from the big engines. Diesel is easily the villain of the book but Duck is easily the one who instigated the events of it all due to his ego.

The situation between Duck and Diesel was six of one and half a dozen of another. Duck did get too proud and boastful of his heritage and wound the big engines up. It depends on The Railway Series or The TV Series as to whether The City of Truro came to The Island which causes Duck to boast about his heritage. It is a natural thing for people to talk about certain things in a pleased manner and it is not like Gordon, Henry and James boast about themselves. But Diesel arrived on Sodor, also became boastful claiming he knows how to shunt trucks and Duck could see right through Diesel with his sinister voice. However when push comes to shove, excuse the pun, he demonstrated he couldn’t do it. Duck should’ve still made sure that Diesel collected the right trucks and instead left Diesel to decide for himself resulting in the situation. But Diesel poured more oil on the fire and told lies about Duck which resulted in Duck getting sent away. Duck did come through after his accident in the next story A Close Shave stopping the runaway goods train and crashing into the barbershop where he prevented people from injury or death. This made everyone change their opinion on Duck. I have been like Duck and Diesel in two different situations at work.

It's to the credit of these stories that they have flawed protagonists. The Reverend wrote characters with very realistic, human personalities, and everyone has moments where they need to keep their egos in check. Diesel is an excellently written villain in his introductory story because he is, unfortunately, a lot like people you meet in real life. There are people who can't take responsibility for their own mistakes and blame them on others, and are very skilled at manipulating people into turning against whomever they so choose. Duck and the Diesel Engine is an excellent cautionary tale that prepares children for the types of people they will meet in adulthood.

I think it’s a case where neither of them were in the right, but diesel was worse. Duck was wrong for immediately, assuming the worst of diesel, a Diesel also believed himself to be superior to everyone there. Till that point they were on the same level of immoral behavior, it’s when diesel decided to try to get Duck sent packing over a single joke that the diesel engine went too far. Besides by the end, duck proved that despite his negative qualities, he can be truly selfless as he tried to stop a Runaway Train

@ryanlee551226 күн бұрын
Diesel is such a interesting character, especially in this story. I tend to harmonise characters traits from all eras of the franchise so excuse me if it wasn’t Awdry’s intention. The story is presented from Duck’s pov but not Diesels, I do think he is trying to fit in with the others and make friends, yes it does imply he feels above everyone else due to his ideology of being the new tech, but that’s also a Gordon to Edward trait thing. Duck being the one to take no nonsense of his smooth talk mask likely anger him that he isn’t taken seriously. The fact that Diesel knew Duck just stand there and didn’t tell him about the trucks didn’t help his viewpoint of the pannier, so he doubles down and does what he thinks are Duck’s malicious tactics after “reassurance” from the big engines, talking to the trucks. (Or he just gets the idea from them idk) I think the similarities between the 08 and pannier is a nice twisted reflection of Duck, even if ego is the only thing they have in common. so uhh… quack quack wins.

At least his suspicions of Diesel were proven correct later on. Diesel did reveal some of his true nature to him when they're alone by stating that diesels don't need to learn and are revolutionary then a lot more when he start telling lies about Duck. Even if Duck didn't play a trick on him or acted wrong, Diesel would still reveal his true nature and wouldn't listen to him either way.

Very solid ranking! Here's mine: 1. George Carlin 2. Early Michael Angelis (S3-S7) 3. Mark Moraghan 4. Ringo Starr 5. Willie Rushton 6. Pierce Brosnan 7. Michael Brandon (While yes he's voices can be very hit or miss, he's WAY overhated and his energy and enthusiasm is sorely underappreciated) 8. Johnny Morris 9. Alec Baldwin (Only really great in S5. Had he kept the same enthusiasm in S6, he would've been much higher.) 10. Sir John Gielgud (He's good but he talks a little too fast for my liking) 11. Late Michael Angelis (S8 onwards) (Sorry, he kind of fell off during the HiT era and never really fully recovered. Classic series Angelis however, is a different story) 12. Ted Robbins 13. Ben Forster 14. Bruce Alexander 15. Thomas aka Joseph May and John Hasler (Dgmw, I love Joseph May and John Hasler as Thomas voice actors, but having Thomas be the narrator just feels so... wrong.)
