I've only these last few days come upon this whole concert, watching of which has been a joy. One of those times one would have liked to be in the audience. Reba was a revelation. Baldwin was ... well let's skip that one. But this gentleman was excellent throughout. And his delivery of this song ...Oh my! Utterly utterly sublime. Shivers up and down listening. As others have said, its being live adds another level. Totally wonderful.

I did not know about that sung lead-in ("I was cheated before...") until my old high school did South Pacific. Now, the show seems incomplete without it. I'm glad revivals have added it back in.

Some nights everything just comes together. A brilliant moment. Many truly great voices have sung this - Ezio Pinza! Giorgio Tozzi! - but somehow this live recording may be the best version ever.
@gadenkrotis5408 ай бұрын
Yes this is definitely the best version I’ve heard - in fact, BSM’s in this scene and song would be in my top 5 best recordings of a live performance from anyone, anywhere - across all genres. Sublime!

I forgot to mention I have a youtube channel. I am 84 years old and started learning how to sing February 2019. I started with a good bass baritone ending at C2 and high note D4. I now can sing with a much better tone down to A2 and can hit G5 but am working to get good control of the higher notes.
@neilgrossbard2511 Жыл бұрын
I have a very similar voice in this range (over 3 octave range chest voice). I sing in all types of voice baritone bass (this), baritone, tenor, lyric tenor (highest tones say above about D5). I don't remember if I uploaded this (boy do we sound similar). My highest note is probably better than his (heading to baritone).

All singers have moments when they catch magic in a bottle and the genii comes out. True professionals can do it for each song. Julie Andrew's is among the best. Brian is another. Superb performance.

Brian Stokes Mitchell has one of those voices that even if he sang the alphabet song, you could cry. So beautiful, and his voice too! Oh, let’s face it. Nobody reading this comment would kick him out of their bed!

I agree that he is a superb artist. That said, this rendition is too slow, losing all sense of the slow waltz that it is.

Oh, I LOVE the slow tempo - the cumulative, steady as a rock, measured (and stunningly well sung) slowness, makes it for me. ...Subjective, I know.

I have been so attached to South Pacific since I was a teen. Razanno Brazzi (sp) sang it for the original movie. This performance is so passionate, so heart felt, so believable that I cry each time I hear it. What artistry.
