I can leave it like it is in the winter. I’m in the U.S. and temperatures only get to -2C in the winter.

Looks like your canna's aren't as high as they usually are, is that correct?
@Tropifornia5 күн бұрын
You have a good eye, the Russian Red is noticeably shorter this season. I wonder if it’s because the rhizome is old and is impacted and needs to be dug up and broken apart. Or is it shorter because I cut it back to the ground in the winter. There is a Russian Red that I propagated that is now taller than the original. ❤️🌴🌱
@tropidutch5 күн бұрын
@@Tropifornia not sure if that is the thing lol, here in the Netherlands the canna's are also slightly shorter than they usually are, but we did had a crappy spring and summer till now, only a few warm days and alot of rain and low temps

I just planted some cannas along the fence between my neighbors house and mine. I have some lady palms I'm going to plant also. I want some privacy and shade but no big trees too close to the house. If they do well I might get a bird of paradise. It'll be my tropical side of the house. 🌴 Yours are beautiful.

Do you cut them during winter?
@Tropifornia10 күн бұрын
In the winter, the leaves will turn brown and die back. I don’t cut them in the winter.

It's sad to find your garden in this way after the holidays 😢 I really like the scenes of Yellowstone National Park 🤩 Summer is always so hot in my garden, and I'm going on vacation, this is why I have a lot of wet areas created with tarps. My colocasias in pots placed in the pond survive well. But last summer, Hilo Beauty suffered from the heat, even with this method and I had to put it in the shade, where it was better
@Tropifornia11 күн бұрын
I was saddened when I first saw it, the cannas and bananas thrived in the heat. Have fun on your vacation.❤️🌱🌴
@lejardinexotiquedecapucine775110 күн бұрын
@@Tropifornia For several years, the cannas no longer produced seeds in my garden. Maybe because of the heat or lack of water. But this summer, it's raining a lot and it's a little cooler and the seeds of some cannas are already formed. I also put a lot of mulch to protect the bananas, cannas and hedychiums from the heat and lack of water. Summer is not over and your colocasias will grow if you water them 🌴
@Tropifornia9 күн бұрын
Thanks, I’ve been giving them lots of water and they’re growing again. The smaller ones that died back to the ground show no signs of growth. Hopefully, their corms will grow again.

Hello! New subscriber here. I was wondering what planting zone you are in. I ask because I am wondering what would work well in my garden here in NJ. All of your plants are amazing and you are a queen of green thumbs! Thank you for uploading your videos for all of us and this here newbie.

I’m in zone 9b, so I do get frost in the winter with temperatures going as low as 28F. I’m not sure what would survive outdoors in NJ, since your winters are probably much colder. Thank you for subscribing! ❤️🌴🌱

I love the video. I wonder if the seed would germinate in the tropic? Are these plants perennial?
@Tropifornia21 күн бұрын
In the tropics they probably are perennial, but for me it gets too cold in the winter, so they grow as annuals. The seeds should germinate naturally, but scarifying the seeds speeds up the process.

Hello! I always watch all your videos with pleasure. It's always great. 🤩 I love this canna. My tests with this canna are that if you cut a rhizome with only purple leaves and plant it in an other place it only produces stems with purple foliage. I think it's because it's a hybrid and isn't very stable. I have already noticed this phenomenon with another canna hybrid. So you have to be careful and not keep too many stems with only purple leaves.

I always look forward to your comments because they are so helpful. I will try dividing a rhizome to see what happens. ❤️🌱🌴

Can i do it just from a cutting of stem and leaf ?
@Tropifornia26 күн бұрын
it will need a part of the corm or have roots to survive.

I have a mango canna and it’s beautiful. I haven’t seen any insects eating it except for some tiny grasshoppers. Not on the leaves but on the beautiful blooms and within a day or two they are turning brown and loosing their blooms. I knock them off but they come back and it’s usually only one or two at a time. I used Neem oil spray in hopes they would not return but they are still there ruining my beautiful blooms. 😢
