Is there an average amount of how much to raise your shutter from the ambient to the flash shot?

Hi Rich Thanks so much for these great informative videos. I am new to the industry and really interested in this style of shooting. I am wondering for the ambient photograph, do you shoot aeb bracketed shots and then merge them as an HDR image or do you only shoot one ambient shot? Thanks in advance

Excellent DIY ideas with the pole and additional support at the top. I will try these out with some shots at the beach I plan to do. Quick note. You can actually attach two (or more) of the poles together. All that's needed is to take the screws out at the top of a second pole (there are 2 of them now). Then insert this metal pole into the bottom (fiberglass section) of the slightly extended first pole (three notches). Then measure and mark two holes to be drilled through the fiberglass section. These holes will match the location of the holes already on the metal pole. Drill all the way through both the fiberglass pole and the metal pole. Put two bolts/nuts through your new holes and you now have a pole almost double the height of the 16ft pole plus it will shift back down to about 10ft in length. Easier to show than explain. Not quite as stable at the 16 ft by itself, but still good.

After watching this video I picked up this camera a lens for a really good price, I wanted to get the best bang for the buck since I'm not a pro and good photographers are hard to find in rural areas, My inside pictures are amazing but the outside photos are lacking detail, should I use a different lens for outside or different camera settings?

On a D750, in portrait orientation, achieved in the way you illustrate, do you have any problem revolving the shift lock release knob to make it sufficiently finger tight (without over-tightening) to prevent the shift function falling or creeping downwards?

Hey Rich! Great video and very informative. I do have a quick question. It’s hard to see, but how do you have the X Pro connected to the camera? I see you have a camera ranger (which I’ll look into), but not sure if the X Pro is connected to it? Thanks!

I use this lens all the time. It produces very sharp images all the time. But, I stop down to f14-18 when I shift. If you are doing this wide open at f4 then, of course, you are going to get poor sharpness in the far reaches.

Hi, thanks to your video, I'm just about to buy either a Bogen 340 or 346 from ebay, I have to have eBay send it to Jetbox in Miami and then Jetbox send it to me in Bogotá Colombia, so double transport cost. Hopping you can quickly compare theese two for me , obviously one is bigger than the other and they are very similar. But I have never had either in my hands. Thanks and Merry Xmas. 🎉

Comment on an old video. I bought a D4 head a couple of years ago and really disliked the OEM clamp set up. I found your video and finally I ordered the RRS clamp and changed it myself. Fantastic! I am so glad you made the video. I now love my D4. Not only the bubble level but the ease of operation is excellent!

Hi Rich, I'm must have missed something in your presentation. If you exposed for the brightest area in your ambient image, why is the window, presumably the brightest, blown out? It looks like a darker area was metered.. Thanks for your time.

Hello Rich After watching your video I really wanted a Bogen Tripod. I live in Switzerland, we have a website that does the same as Ebay but only for Switzerland. To my great surprise I found a Bogen Tripod on the website with the original Tripodhead and original manual, where also the price from back then is written on it (125$). I paid 90$ for the tripod. In the last few days I was able to test the tripod with my Eos 5DSR. It is exactly as you said: The Tripod stands absolutely still and I am now also fan of the Tripodhead. Thanks for the tip!

That is so great to hear! I stand by my tripods day in and day out and that one is the one for me always has been since the mid-1980s so tremendous value as well and it’s amazing how you can still find so many of them, because back in the day, that was probably the most popular tripod in the world, and they made so many, and they just hold up and stand up and last forever I’m really happy I could help you with this.

This might be a dumb question but what do you do if your photo shoot can only be done in the evenings with little or no ambient light?
@JoshxIZ
@JoshxIZ 11 ай бұрын
I do alot of dark homes, and you can get ambient light. Its not unsual for me to have 1-5 second exposures. And in basements etc its pitch black so to get a faster shutter you got to shoot wide open and turn on lights if possible. F/4 on a good quality wide angle lens still produces a sharp image (everything is in focus still but softer around the edges). So answer: shoot wide open, turn on lights, you need a tripod to be able to get long exposures.
@RichBaum
@RichBaum 11 ай бұрын
Well, if you’re shooting at night, you’re out of luck and sure you could probably work in some tricks, but it’s just a different thing. When I go to twilight shoots, sometimes I love shooting single exposures interiors when it’s dark outside or at least a little late coming in from outside, but without any light at all, not much you can do for the windows that’s why I would never shoot any home interior at night.

Hello Rich! I'm really getting a lot out of your channel. I have one question. I copied your pole end cap and I like your idea of going to 5/16 instead of 1/4 thread. Did you have to drill and tap the tripod head? Pretty much any I find are quarter twenty (like the cameras). Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
@RichBaum
@RichBaum 11 ай бұрын
No, I drill into the endcap. You can make it out of PVC or get it out of metal. They’re both good and actually PVC is great too. Never had an issue nothing ever failed and you can use whatever thread you’d like. What works for what you have and the best part about this whole thing is it’s so simple and there’s no real need for a tripod head because you were just the angle by angling the pole he wouldn’t use it like a tripod.

I don't know what Arca-Swiss were doing six years ago, but if you buy this head today the center screw will be secured in place with a threadlocker and can be easily removed. You just need to be really firm with the hex key and it'll come straight out.

That’s so great to hear because I always thought it was so stupid for them to glue down the clamp because everyone should have the ability to switch out clamps if they want and not be subject to using one single clamp so it’s really good to hear that

Does this eliminate the hdr bracket shots?
@RichBaum
@RichBaum 11 ай бұрын
You can still do brackets, which is actually what I do, but I never do auto brackets. I only do the exposures that I think I will need an editing, so remember the whole point of this is to get as much ammo as you need at the time you’re photographing so when you get home and sit down to edit and photo shop, you have all the parts of the puzzle or the ammunition I Collett that you’ll need to be successful. And the more you do this the easier it gets in the faster it gets

The bottom line is you need to have someplace to host it so I don’t know if you can save it on your computer but to present it it Hass to be 360 compatible that’s why you can post a stitched 360 on Facebook and it will work because Facebook algorithms work with 360s if you need more information contact me at [email protected]

Remember, dark and mode, only exposes what’s darker, and not what’s lighter so as long as the shades are brighter than the frame below it, which would be your flash exposure it won’t mask in if you’re in dark mode it’s a tricky concept to get at the beginning, but once you get, it totally makes sense, I’d be happy to help you in more depth, if you’d like to set up a private coaching session, if this interests you send me an email to richardrichbaum.com or you can text me at 916-296-5778. Thank you for the great review. It appears that the G4 does not allow for a very drastic tilt to allow for shooting more straight upwards at tall buildings, for example when standing nearly beneath them. Am I assuming that correctly? I have the BH-55 currently and love it for my landscape work, but would like a geared head for fine art architecture. Many times I am making compositions that have my camera pointing nearly straight up… the BH-55 allows for that, but with the caveat of not being geared. Perhaps RRS will release a geared version one day. I'd be all over the G4 if it had a better range of motion, and it appears that it lacks in that regard. Thank you for any additional insight you can provide. Cheers!
@RichBaum
@RichBaum 11 ай бұрын
I assume you’re referring to the D4 not G4? Honestly, the best set up you could get would be a D4 at the tilt shift lens that would be perfect for you. Personally, I’ve never found this head not to tilt enough for my needs, but your needs might be a little bit different.

Hey, Rich. Been a while since we talked. I know this video is 2 years old, but hopefully you still get the comments from older videos. I shot a house yesterday with blonde wooden paneling on the walls. Out of camera, they looked very orange. I wasn't worried, because I thought I could fix them in post by pulling out the orange and a little yellow. But I wasn't really happy with the result. Any ideas? Thanks. Jim Ruse
