We named our first orange tabby cat (many years ago) Ambrose, because we knew of three different Ambroses that had disappeared....Ambrose Bierce is the only one I can remember now, and there's no use asking my wife, she's always had a poor memory. I would like to figure out who the other two were....

Not too much conjecture as to what happened. Both Blenheim and Java were sighted with flags flying upside down after hitting an Indian Ocean cyclonic 'gale' near Madagascar. The fact that they were never seen again after that doesn't leave too many options as to their fate. One does wonder, however, why a 176 ft long gunboat would need a crew of 590.

Is it still too controversial to expect it to be pointed out what a genocidal, r*ping maniac Columbus was? Is that too much, when even his own peers called him a monster? History Guy so often toes the line so well on topics that others could exploit for clickbait, but I don’t know how it doesn’t deserve recognition, the untold numbers of innocent lives lost to his bloodthirst. Just because we never knew the names of those individual men, women and children, doesn’t mean that they don’t also “deserve to be remembered”. I mean. Do people still prefer to insist that their middle school teachers couldn’t have had it wrong decades ago, over spare a thought for the rivers of blood on the man’s hands? Are people that closed-off that the HG doesn’t want to even touch the possibility of mentioning this vast miseducation? An open mind is irrevocably tied to the intellectual curiosity that I would think would lead anyone to want to learn this history, especially if it had been attempted to be erased, and a little empathy for the innocents wouldn’t erase anyone’s modern cultural sense of identity. “Into God’s arms” indeed

My favorite bierceism is ----- TRIAL- A formal inquiry designed to prove and put upon record the blameless characters of judges, advocates and jurors. In order to effect this purpose it is necessary to supply a contrast in the person of one who is called the defendant, the prisoner, or the accused. If the contrast is made sufficiently clear this person is made to undergo such an affliction as will give the virtuous gentlemen a comfortable sense of their immunity, added to that of their worth.

What a Narcissist Personality Disorder the Senator proved to be, he actually thought himself above commitment, above responsibility, and above jurisdiction. Maybe the ruling satisfied her, but, if she were my client, I would have had him back in court: he would pay the settlement to my client or the court system. If I had to do it probono One must "follow through" or it all was a waste of time, money, and efforts. Ethics are worth the actions. When my sister became County Clerk in 1978, she had all of the deeds, and other documents in county storage, photographed and placed on microfilm (the documents had been stored in cardboard boxes forever). I suppose that the medium changed sometime in the 1990's. Speaking of which, when another relative became Sheriff in 1990, he did the same thing with law enforcement records, which believe it or not, were still on paper, in cardboard boxes, in a shed, in a field ( the records partially chewed by rodents).

Anybody who has used microfilm produced at different times during the 20th century knows that the images are often inadequate for discerning details. I ran across this as a librarian while helping students do research on historical advertising in popular American magazines. digital images are greatly more useful, but not always available. Nicholson Baker's book Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper reveals the amount of destruction of original books, newspapers and other texts that was involved over the years in producing commercially exploitable microfilms. The value of micro-formats cannot be underestimated but we should keeo in mind that there are disadvantages ofmany kinds in depending on them.

I remember my university proudly announcing their campaign to transfer microfiche to digital. (CDs, then tape drives, …). I still worry about anti-historical groups who try to destroy the artifacts they don’t like, be it taliban shooting ancient buddhas, or modern politicians refusing to acknowledge repeated failures of bad policy.

I work for a newspaper and our library system archives our papers on microfiche. It goes all the way back to when we started in 1908. We found out this year that they're changing. Instead of us mailing them a hard copy and them photographing it, they now want us to send them a PDF. But the most interesting part is that they are not going to simply be storing the PDFs. They're actually going to convert the PDFs into microfiche so that they are stored on the same mechanical medium that the paper has been stored on for the last 120 years. I thought that was pretty interesting.
