My take is skills and judgment before kit. Get your roll, get instruction, know your limits, dress for immersion, practice out-of-boat rescues. VHF, flares, PLB, cell phone, etc are last resort options when everything else has gone wrong.

@@AdventureOtaku on today's short trip i tried tying the backseat back as far as possible, and now it's at least possible for me to sit down and then get the legs in, the way you do. I've thought about campgrounds on roadtrips for those amenities you talked about. But for $60, you can get a Motel 6. Yes, it's the cheapest thing out there. But my experiences in say the last 5 times I've done it, I got a comfortable bed, a hot shower, internet service, etc. My wife refuses to stay in a Motel 6 and I'll take it up on a notch when I'm traveling with her. But when it's me and my son, or by myself, I have no problem with them. I would prefer to stealth park when I can. But if we're talking spending $60 for a shower and internet service, I'm thinking a cheap motel vs a campground is preferable.

I get what you’re saying, the difference for me, is I am bringing my bed with me. So all I need is the shower, and the Wi-Fi…. The real problem is since I made this video it is now hard to find a $60 KOA….. they are all closer to $100 now.

Sorry I'm just seeing this now. I love C'ton. Living in Atlanta, it is my go-to for ocean/bay/saltwater marsh paddling. Well, if you ever go back, definitely go to Bowen's Island restaurant for inexpensive seafood (I have other great recommendations for great upscale places). Stay in your camper at Jame's Island County park. For starters vis-a-vis paddling, from Jame's Island park head south on Folly Rd and put in at the Folly River boat ramp. Get in your kayak and head more-or-less southwest. Pay attention to the tides and currents and maybe cross the mouth of the next river to get to Kiawah Island. You can curl around the island to get into more open ocean / surfing in not-terribly challenging (often) conditions if that's your thing.

Fantastic demo, thanks for putting it together. Bought my first Whisperlite in 1990. Excellent video. I use carb cleaner to clean the fuel line cable then coat it with mineral oil (baby oil) to lube it as I slide it back in. I start my stove with denatured alcohol which leaves no soot. When I turn off my stove I flip the bottle 180 degrees to move the pick up tube in the bottle to the opposite side of the bottle. As the bottle is laying down there is fuel on the lower part of the bottle and air on top. By flipping the bottle over the pick up tube is sucking in air. When the fuel in the fuel line is replaced with air the stove stops burning and the fuel line is empty, so, no fuel spattering when I take the fuel line off the valve.

Brian would take us out on his boat with any gear we needed, kayaks and all! He would stop and check mid week to see if all was ok and if we needed anything. We did this for a few years and it was the best way to unplug from busy everyday life! There is another place that is wonderful paddling and that is off Blue Rocks in Lunenburg. I’m 71 and have a Nimbus Solander Kevlar boat (16’2”, 46 lbs) that I bought way back in 1984. I transport it on my Subaru Outback using Yakima saddles on the front and rollers on the back. Perhaps I might make a video of how it goes for me. I back the car up to a hump in the yard. Put a yoga mat on the back of the roof. Pull the kayak along the grass, over near the car, then lift the bow up onto the mat and nudge the kayak up until it’s on the rollers. Lift the stern up and slide the boat forward on the rollers till it’s balanced fore and aft on the rollers and saddles. I open the side door and step up on the sill to reach the straps to tie it down. When I get down to the little community yacht club, I can reverse the process but usually one of my buddies can help me. And speaking of our community yacht club, we have about 16 kayaks of various sizes that we loan out to members. And members can bring a friend so they can try paddling too. There are a couple of kayaking outfits not too far away who can do training for those who would like it.

I use essentially the same technique for loading the boat on my van (but it isn’t Kevlar so it weighs more than yours). I don’t have rollers but the back cradles are designed to be slippery. Where are you located?

Wow...had no idea you were coming up here to Nova Scotia. We paddle the Wild Islands several times each year...in fact, we were out at Owls Head last Sunday exploring and had to go back this past Saturday to explore some more. We have camped on many of the main islands...right on the beaches...all to ourselves! Your video was great, however, I didn't see you get to any of the majestic beaches...like that on Borgles, Wolfes, Cable, or Baltee. Where those sea kayaks were likely going (in your video) was maybe down to Taylor's Head...another majestic beach/area. Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore is truly a paddling paradise, however, we have also been to beautiful places on the south shore and Bay of Fundy and Cape Breton. Passing on what I have learnt form my own Club Coaches and what I have picked up from yourself. They will be joining my Club in September and the Club that are at has left out teaching them the fundamentals, I even had two total novices out on the water with me and I have defiantly given the Kayaking bug to my Sisters Boyfriend. Not quite so sure about my Niece's Husband. He had a massive grin on his face all the way round the Island, about a mile and a quarter. We just have the ever increasing height from the boat to the bank to deal with as it was over two foot in tidal range from when we first launched. "The point of a Water Trail is to go from point to point. It's not to go 5 miles, it's to go 500 miles." For me, to be designated a "Water Trail" one should be able to do both long AND short distances. Like the AT, a "trail" should be set up to accommodate both day paddlers and long-distance paddlers and everyone in between. Let's face it, for every 1 500-mile paddler there will be 1000 day paddlers and weekenders - and THEY are the ones who will drive the local economies to provide support services along the trail. That means: 1) access points available 24/7 (here we have many local boat ramps but about 2/3 of them do not allow overnight parking - enforced day use only) 2) access points for hand launched craft should be free or a small fee (kayakers don't need a lot of infrastructure like power boats yet in many cases we are forced to use expensive boat ramps and marinas with concrete ramps, picnic pavilions, restrooms, paved & lighted & patroled parking lots, etc. just to get to the water on a piece of public property) 3) legal primitive campsites that you don't have to reserve in advance (Europe and Canada have it much easier than we here in the US since much of the property along our rivers, lakes, and coasts is privately owned with no right of public passage and many public agencies want you to reserve your campsite 3 months to a year in advance to track usage to justify keeping them open and/or protect from over-crowding the few designated sites that ARE made available) 4) campsites spaced at most 10-15 miles apart to accommodate both short- and long-distance paddlers and periods of bad weather 5) a decent on-line map which is updated at least annually - and a way for users to send in/post updates which are then checked out by a second party To me, these are the things that make the difference between a river or coastline that anyone can go paddle and a "Water Trail". And if the trail is laid out with these things in mind then more people will paddle it and user demand will spur local economies to provide support services along the trail.
@AdventureOtaku11 күн бұрын
And I 100% agree. I was explaining MY use. Admittedly I am in the minority. But all of those things are important. The one thing I would disagree with is the 1 (500 miler) to 1000 day paddlers… it’s probably more like 1 to 100, maybe 250. Thanks for such a great comment!

I don't think that Jackson has any incentive to shut down Werner because they are not currently, like you said, competing for the same market. I see this acquisition as a way for Jackson to make Werner more cost effective (and profitable) by merging their administrative services and supply chain. They can also combine both products distribution networks in order to get a larger market penetration for both brands, it is a win-win situation. By doing that, they create better market conditions to compete against AquaBound. As for the Werner brand, it is so widely know in the kayaking world that, I think, it would be a mistake for Jackson to kill it and replace it with Jackson's name. However, I would not be surprised to see that the Werner logo on the paddles will change from "Werner" to something like "Werner by Jackson kayaks". As for the move from WA to TN, summer is probably the best timing to do it because their stock sold for the summer season was manufactured during the winter, so their production is currently in its off-season. This is just like halloween candies, they are made in March and April. Unlike you, I am not worried about Werner's paddles future.
