im using the same primer on my celica 1977. what i would do when blocking, after hitting raw metal stop. Finish up the panel, and filler or prime again to reblock. spot primer-ing it then blocking to blend would even work if time/money does not allow for more primer. I would only wetsand when body filler or metal is all covered and not exposed. your DA sanding method to even out the scratches makes good sense but only if the surface is 100% to your liking ready to up the next grit or lay primer/sealers
@johnniemo
@johnniemo 4 ай бұрын
Good point about wet sanding the bondo. I've done it several times with no issues, but it's not something I should be doing. Even after this surfacing activity, the resulting panel was still wavy. I should have done it 2 or 3 times to make it perfect. Older vehicles have just had so much living.....

The method should work. As long as you reinforce the structure a bit, those bottle jacks will lift an incredible amount of weight. You could do three cross beams to be safe. You can order custom LVL beams in whatever size you want. Since I did this, I came up with all sorts of improvements. For example, you could lift from the outside.... you could lift off the roof.... you could use an automotive 4 post lift.... So many options. It's not as scary as it seems.

What fans do you use to blow the fumes out? Do you recommend if I should get 1 or 2 fans as one for blow air in and one for blow fumes out?
@johnniemo
@johnniemo 5 ай бұрын
Such a well timed question! I actually just re-assembled the paint bay a second time and used a single fan this time. I have found it's simply not enough. If you are painting something as large as a vehicle, you want two fans. The big reason is you want to keep the concentration of ignitable gases to a minimum. Airflow could quite literally save you. I just use garden variety box fans. However if you could get access to an old belt driven furnace fan, that would be the cat's meow. In that way you get the motor out of the paint fumes.

John, glorious afternoon greetings. Thank you for your video and it brought me info I need as that is what is important. I've never used one of these and at the rental shop today I showed them a picture and unfortunately the worker didn't have the info, but said his partner would. I had a slab poured with a hump of about 3/4 of an inch needing removal, but it goes for I reckon at least 20 feet and about 6 foot wide - yes, never use that guy again and don't recommend them. Certainly! I would anticipate if that took you 1 1/2 hours my project will be a very full day and I'll have a sore back at the end of it? Really not much else one can do except jack hammer and don't want to possibly hurt the integrity of the slab. Thank you and God bless! Hoping you're liking that floor you put in. I've installed a few of them for clients and they are amazingly durable to a degree.
@johnniemo

Thanks for the greetings! This is an old video :) If you are buzzing down a high center, as you are doing, I'd consider how you want to refinish it at the end. It isn't the prettiest surface. I still love the Swisstrax, but it's not the cheapest route. My favourite part is how the water drains underneath and the floor is never cold on your feet. It changes the experience of winter. However for the summer time, it gathers a LOT of dust and rocks and gets fairly dirty. You can't just pressure wash it, as it rains debris down all over the place. You have to remove it and clean them outside. But given everything, I'd for sure do the flooring again. It's just so great for the winter.

I had occasionally watched the Lakeside guy. He’s about as far as you can get from restoration type work though. And he uses that one K glazing potty like you and the one K primer. To each their own. My one comment that might help you out is that those long blocks are meant to be mostly used in a straight line but not a complete straight line because they dig scratches but you want to go side to side or the X pattern as little as possible, otherwise you’ve turned an 18 inch block into a 3 inch block that’s just really wide. Your work will get better when you do.
@johnniemo
@johnniemo 5 ай бұрын
Yup, great advice. Thanks for the comment. In the heat of the moment it's easy to forget your goal isn't eliminating the guide coat. Your goal is even and consistent perpendicular blocking. I've only ever used the Valspar, so I'm quite un-informed about what other products work like. I think if you do this every week, you'd benefit from a re-useable product. For me, this is only my second ever job, so I am okay working with the harder 2k primer from Valspar (and the higher price).

Gets the job done. I've watched other videos where they raise the roof which in the end is a lot less work. You don't need to change the door locations and the windows. Why did you choose this technique just wondering?
@johnniemo
@johnniemo 5 ай бұрын
I think I've answered this a few times. But basically I needed the higher door opening to fit my boat in, so that was the primary reason. In the end, I think I disproportionally weighted that requirement. Either way would work. As a side benefit, having my windows higher up has been nice. It gets the sun in better in the winter, and it allows the walls to be more useable for "garage stuff". In one of my comments here somewhere I pondering using my 4 post lift to lift the roof. That would have been a neat video.

@johnniemo
@johnniemo 6 ай бұрын
Use one of those sound locator wands (or a screwdriver up to your ear). Try and find which module is making the noise. My gut would say the AC condenser is the first likely culprit, followed by the power steering. It could also be at the belt is off center on one of the pulleys. I've seen people rub a stick of deodorant (not antiperspirant) along the sides of the belt while it's running to slick it up a bit. That would at least tell you if the sound is coming from the belts and pulleys, or is internal to one of the systems.

Each of the 6 panels are stand alone. I stack the 4 8x8s together and I stack the 2 10x8s together. Kinda like books on a shelf. Then I move each stack outside and put between my garage and the fence. Unfortunately the plastic did not survive the elements over 3 years of sun, wind and ice. I think I would have been better off with 6 mil plastic. Perhaps something UV protected. OR I could wrap them in a tarp. Nice work man! I am wondering how do you control the temperature of the inlet air or just let it be? I am worrying if the temp would be too cold for the paint during winter even I will be in a garage
@johnniemo
@johnniemo 8 ай бұрын
Control would be a strong word. My garage is heated with a forced air, down draft furnace. So it has a thermostat outside of the paint booth and it reconciles there. I set it to around 20C when I'm painting. With the exhaust fans going, the furnace pretty much runs steady during the winter time. I didn't measure, but it would get down to 15C by the time the fumes had cleared. I try to close up the exhaust fan as quickly as I can once the fumes are gone to let the paint cure. I used fast dry products where I could and I didn't have any issues. It really all depends how much heat you can generate in your garage (and how cold it is outside).

I've never had that. But it makes sense that if you suck up some dirt/mud on the lake it will end up passing through your cooling system. A lot of other boats have a sea strainer for that reason. I wouldn't worry about it.

From what I understand, getting "old school" boats to crab in the water is the most important thing besides displacement(ballast). Try putting the suck gate up towards the middle of the boat's length, then add the short/tall gate back to the rear with a medium deflection wedge and a little bit of angle so that as the boat is pitched in the water, the deflector is either straight vertical or still slightly leaned forward. Also, skew the suck gate cups so that it's as angled down/forward into the water as possible for the same reason. Lastly, only use front ballast to clean up the wave, otherwise run as little as possible to get more height and push.

@johnniemo
@johnniemo 11 ай бұрын
There is a lot of debate about negative pressure vs positive pressure. After a lot of reading, I felt negative would work better in my situation. The primary issue with my approach is the potential for explosion. However I think high volume mitigates that issue, hence two large fans. In the end, I had an excellent quality paint job, so I'd say it worked fine. Just keep the air moving.
